Mass evacuation of London

madcatladyforever · 20/12/2020 09:36

just seen yesterdays videos of the mass evacuation of people from London to go and spend christmas elsewhere before it's too late.
Well done Londeners thanks for spreading the virus mutation ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
Now waiting for tier 4 all over the country in the new year.
Because your christmas is so much more important than anybody elses health.
This is how it all started, no action in Wuhan, a few days later it's been flown all over the world, fantastic.
Mark my words the new year will be hell.

It is not a "mass evacuation". It looked like any normal pre-covid Friday night to me on the news pictures. I'm not saying people should have done it but get some perspective.

TheSultanofPingu · 20/12/2020 09:42

I think a thread along the same lines has just been deleted. Can we please stop with all this division. Things are miserable enough as it is!

Notstayingup · 20/12/2020 09:43

Erm wind your neck in - I think you’ll find there a lot of us still here... merry Christmas

Rosehip10 · 20/12/2020 09:44

Oh sod off with your carbon copy daily mail headlines - one twitter video (who was "outraged" yet admitted she was doing the same) of some people queuing at barriers at St Pancras and some clever "beach style" photos of people social distancing at what was probably a not that busy Euston.

Divebar · 20/12/2020 09:44

How many threads like this do you want?

AgeOfExploration · 20/12/2020 09:45

Grin at “mass evacuation”... there are almost 9 million people in London; do a few crowded trains on a Friday night before Christmas equal a mass evacuation?

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 20/12/2020 09:50

I have to say, the pictures I saw online didn't show particularly crowded stations. As a regular train traveller, I've seen far more crowded stations on a normal day.

Oysterbabe · 20/12/2020 09:52

It's not a mass evacuation but a not insignificant number of people have fled London. Some of them will be carrying the new strain and this will result in it spreading to other parts of the UK faster.

Hardbackwriter · 20/12/2020 09:52

I don't understand how the majority of these people can be Londoners - maybe a few are going to second homes, but surely most must be people returning to their home towns? It's not like Hull was full of Londoners looking for a place at the inn last night, so anyone leaving had somewhere to go.

BewareTheBeardedFatMan · 20/12/2020 09:54

The 'new' strain is already in Scotland. Unless it can fly it's clearly everywhere already. It would have been tier 4 everywhere in new year regardless. There is no comparison with the original spread from Wuhan, to current spread where it's already everywhere. Has no-one from outside of London been into and out of London or the SE recently.

I don't know if the government want us to turn on each other but that's what we're all doing. It helps no one and just makes a shitty situation far far worse.

KaptainKaveman · 20/12/2020 09:58

Oh good, another ridiculous thread full of badly spelt and poorly punctuated Daily Torygraph garbage.

islockdownoveryet · 20/12/2020 09:58

I think it would of made more sense to just isolate between now and Christmas and then travel up for Christmas therefore limiting the possibility of taking COVID up to their families if they absolutely couldn't spend Christmas without them .
But I actually think it's inevitable that we will/ have / had Covid .
Unless you haven't left the house at all since the beginning of the year we will catch it spread it . It's out there it's up to you how you limit the passing of the infection.

KaptainKaveman · 20/12/2020 09:59

Haha yes, gasp and shock at the hordes of literally several commuters piling onto trains. Grin.

Never let the truth get in the way of hyperbole eh?

Littleyell · 20/12/2020 10:00

I don’t blame the people tbh. Who is in charge here? The first poster is right OP get some perspective (pronto).

How could London have been doing so well (compared to other cities) then bang a new strain has been found and then it’s worse then ever.

It’s a shit show. I’m dreading what’s to come (not LDN based). At least Borris could do is to be clear from the START

carlaCox · 20/12/2020 10:01

Dear god please stop with this crap. The people to blame are the government for cocking this up so spectacularly.

Why are you calling them "Londoners" anyway? If they're Londoners their family and friends will most likely be in London so where exactly will they be evacuating to?

MajesticWhine · 20/12/2020 10:01

I'm in London and not going anywhere. But I do have sympathy with young adults living alone here or in house shares and can understand them wanting to get out of london quickly and not spend Christmas alone.

ceeveebee · 20/12/2020 10:02

Really happy that my neighbour’s son, wife and kids have arrived from London last night no doubt to stay for the next week - that was never legal even under the old rules. We are greater
Manchester, tier 3 and have had our rates plummet recently. Fuming. So selfish

theneverendinglaundry · 20/12/2020 10:05

It was in the Daily Mail so it must be true! 🧐

It makes me really sad how people are turning on eachother.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 20/12/2020 10:05

Have you never seen the commuter rush hour in London before? Bless. There are times it gets so busy at some tube stations they have to shut the entrances to clear the station. I do think some people are picturing scenes from disaster movies with queues of cars fleeing the Godzilla ravaged city.

Yes, a single person with the new strain travelling to the north could take it with them, I’m not denying that, but mostly it spreads in ripples, and it’ll ripple its way around the country.

EssentialHummus · 20/12/2020 10:05

Pure anecdote but here (London zone 2) we’re down about 50% of the normal volume of cars this morning.

QueenStromba · 20/12/2020 10:05

It makes a massive difference actually. Say there are ten cases currently in Glasgow and this strain has a doubling time of a week: Week 0: 10 cases Week 1: 20 cases Week 2: 40 cases Week 3: 80 cases Week 4: 160 cases

If 150 people bring it from London then Glasgow has lost a month where they could have been preparing, increasing restrictions to slow the spread and vaccinating the vulnerable.

Motnight · 20/12/2020 10:09

My guess would be that the majority of people travelling yesterday were in fact non Londoners returning home. As a Londoner I personally have no place to go except home. Which is in London.

Government has got just what it wanted - do a crap job and watch people turn on each other as opposed to ask why we are in this situation in the first place.

bunwell · 20/12/2020 10:09

Having been identified in September, the new strain will be throughout the Uk already.

Cowmilk · 20/12/2020 10:11

Londoner here and I don’t know anyone who is leaving. We just been told to stay home, which is not hard. What is hard is paying hotels extortion amount of money to spend the night for the millions of people who commute into London for work. They need to go back. Dbro told me his office was very busy with people coming in to take there work laptops early and then travelling back to their homes that are in different tiers.

Apandemicyousay · 20/12/2020 10:14

These are going to be non-Londoners going home. Why would Londoners be leaving days before Christmas?
This variant is already all over UK, it’s more prevalent in London & Kent
