Idiots piling onto packed trains out of London

By doing this they're putting whatever family or friends they're staying with at huge risk, not to mention the wider communities.

Also, the mindset of "it's within the rules because it's not midnight yet". It's not within the rules to breach social distancing. For goodness sake the trains are still running tomorrow so if you're going to break or bend the rules do it then when you won't be stood on a carriage with scores of other people.

Good for them. I hope they all get where they want to go.

PickAChew · 19/12/2020 21:42

Surely they must already have had tickets booked. I can't remember the last time you could just decide to catch a mainline train, on the spur of the moment, even pre-pandemic.

User158340 · 19/12/2020 21:43

@texascactus

Doubt it OP.

Lner only let you travel with seat reservations and the carriages are holding barely any passengers. Much like buses at the moment. Some seats aren’t in use. Have travelled twice in the past few weeks and this has been the case both times.

Don’t be so dramatic.

There will be some who did late Christmas shopping.

Still the decision should have been made on Wednesday or earlier.

tinselfest · 19/12/2020 21:44

Quite a lot of them were probably people who had only gone to London today to do some shopping. Stupid idea to go in the first place, but since they don't live in London they can hardly stay there, can they?

I live about an hour out of Kings Cross, and in a normal year I'd probably have gone shopping into London on the train today myself.

My friend went from London to Liverpool some days ago. Train was full as was the station. She now has Covid and went into hospital today. She is very sure she picked it up on the train.
frumpety · 19/12/2020 21:44

Does Harriet Clugston live in Leeds and so is making this journey home ?

LeaveMyDamnJam · 19/12/2020 21:46

So the person filming it, who is there, is saying how busy it is. Not really a position of strength is it.

ElephantWhaleRabbit · 19/12/2020 21:46

Bottom line, if the trains are crammed that situation has been created by government incompetence. Instead of pragmatic sensible advice, instead of doing something two weeks ago, Boris tell everyone, with 7 hours notice, that if they leave London after midnight they’ll get arrested.

Slow handclap all round.

And this is happening on a large scale tonight.

It's a recipe for spreading the virus. 2+ hours of being crammed next to people if the seats are all taken. Then they go home to pass it on to Mum and Dad or their Grandparents and extended family.

At least on a plane you've got a chance with the ventilation.

Yeah they seem to be taking pelters for it on Twitter.
BananaPop2020 · 19/12/2020 21:48

Oh sort yourself out OP, and see the bigger picture here. WHY do you think the trains are packed?

ohwhatamiserableyear · 19/12/2020 21:49

No, she freely admits she's going to her mother's to spend christmas holidays with her.

No, but she filmed a video from inside the train with an automated announcement saying social distancing is not possible on this train (people are literally standing in the aisles) and the message was basically get off if you aren't comfortable with that.

Yep, send them north to spread it 🤬🤬🤬

Well, the bottom line is we'll all suffer in January.
OP posts:
AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 19/12/2020 21:52

Well it’s hardly surprising isn’t it?
Boris gives us less than 8hrs notice that everything will shut and you’ll get fined for leaving - so obviously everyone has panicked and is leaving now. Plus all those that leave their Christmas shopping until this week have suddenly rushed out to buy some gifts. Of course it was going to be crammed. It’s like saying Tesco’s is going to shut tonight for a month - everyone would rush out to get what they need, it’s human nature.
Don’t blame to passengers, it is 100% down to Boris.

ChasingRainbows19 · 19/12/2020 21:52

I read the post on Twitter she is going to stay with her mum in Leeds. She also said the announcements on the train were that the train was too busy for social distancing and to leave the train if you did not want that.

The train also ended in derby and people will have had to change trains. More mixing it all up.

New Covid 19 coming to a northern city near you in a few days...

SimonJT · 19/12/2020 21:52

A friend (who is in our bubble) was due to travel to his mums today to stay for a few weeks, he has decided not to due to the stations being packed.

My partner finished work at 6:30 today, he said there were a lot of people on the tube with suitcases, something we haven’t seen in a while. Stations are often busier due to some people living in London in the week and going home at the weekend, but the images do appear to be much busier than a usual Friday.

PhilCornwall1 · 19/12/2020 21:53

Is anyone surprised this is happening, what do people expect?

Hercwasonasnowball · 19/12/2020 21:53

Imaging you're early 20s, been living in London alone all through lockdown. Your one light at the end of the tunnel was seeing family at Christmas.

Boris then makes a ridiculous announcement so you decide to travel legally before the restrictions are put in place.

I don't blame them at all. Boris could have forseen all of this and chose not to listen. He chose to ignore the experts. He chose to give people false hope.

People are now making their choices.

soleromimi · 19/12/2020 21:54

Why are there people saying "oh well I travelled on Friday and it was fine" etc - the point is it's now rammed AFTER today's announcement as we are being told if we leave London post-midnight we will be arrested.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 19/12/2020 21:56

Great - New Covid to be spread all along the East Coast Mainline.

Cornettoninja · 19/12/2020 21:58

This is exactly what happened with the international travel corridors though isn’t it? People scrambling to outrun restrictions without consideration for the microscopic reason for the the restrictions.

I sympathise with people on an individual level but it’s bonkers and potentially disastrous.

Pleasedontleave123 · 19/12/2020 21:58

I’ve just started a thread about this ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4111005-To-ask-people-in-the-south-east-to-please-stay-where-they-are ) but totally agree op
