Isn't it?

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/18/boris-johnson-calls-crisis-meeting-to-discuss-response-to-new-covid-strain

They're panicking now.

Did they say if there is going to be an announcement of any kind?

BBC breaking news alert just came through on my phone saying Boris doing a press conference later today
AuntieStella · 19/12/2020 13:01

I've just had a news pop up saying there will be a Boris press conference today

Alas

Sweettea1 · 19/12/2020 13:02

Christmas will not be cancelled whats he going to say take ya tree down send all gifts bk the shop and don't celebrate at all? No no hes not gonna say that so Christmas is not cancelled. Seeing family out side your household may be cancelled but Christmas is not!

Sbishka · 19/12/2020 13:02

It’s so complicated and emotive, isn’t it? I’m one finding my mental health is suffering and I’m sorry for anyone in that boat, and trying to balance the right thing to do with assessing risk when the government has — yet again — failed to give the right message or to do the right thing.

willsantausesantatize · 19/12/2020 13:02

Sky news. Boris to do another conference today. Not sure which time.

Unsure33 · 19/12/2020 13:03

The fact is whatever they do will be wrong as is shown clearly by the posts on here .

The schools being closed might have countered some people mixing so they could have been ok.

But now the new mutation is shown to be even more contagious then things may have to change.

To be honest I think their biggest mistake is thinking the great British public can be sensible.

If you can’t be firm with your family and make your own decisions because it might offend people then I despair.

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2020 13:05

Paul Brand @PaulBrandITV
BREAKING: The Prime Minister will hold a press conference this afternoon alongside the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Advisor, as serious concerns grow about the new strain of Covid-19.

PM is about to speak to the cabinet first. Brace for bad news I’m afraid.

The Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty has just released this statement saying the evidence suggests that the new variant is spreading more rapidly, though there is no evidence yet that it is any more deadly or affects the efficacy of vaccines, but more research is being done.

Christmas IS going to be cancelled - last minute.
willsantausesantatize · 19/12/2020 13:05

Can't send the parcels back as the post office is overwhelmed here. Couldn't even put a small letter in the post box the other day it was full to the brim
Plus the lorries are all backed up too.
The news sounds grim already and he hasn't even spoken yet.

IntermittentParps · 19/12/2020 13:06

It seems pretty obvious to me that the sensible thing would be not to ban travel per se, but to not let households mix indoors.

Rosehip10 · 19/12/2020 13:07

Bojo whitty and vallance briefing this afternoon.

Unsure33 · 19/12/2020 13:07

@Sbishka

They have said clearly the risk is high and look at your own circumstances so what do you think is best ?

They have been criticised for lockdown or not doing lockdown?

What can they do to help your situation and others at the same time ?

They were not to know there was going to be a mutation were they ?

Meredithgrey1 · 19/12/2020 13:08

What’s the process for the Christmas rules? If Boris decides to change them, does he then have to convince MPs to vote for it like with the tier system a few weeks ago?

Coldwinterahead1 · 19/12/2020 13:09

Do we know what time the briefing is?xx

AuntieStella · 19/12/2020 13:11

SKY are trailing it as likely to have 'grim' news (wonder what they know already?)

The House has risen for Christmas, but members were on a sort of notice for recall - in case of need for action if Brexit deal reached, but could also be activated for any new significant business

Meredithgrey1 · 19/12/2020 13:12

There’s a cabinet meeting at 1 I think. They’ve just said it will be after that.
RedToothBrush · 19/12/2020 13:13

Bbc coverage from 3.30pm for press conference but no detail on what time the actual press conference is - bbc merely saying 'sometime after that'.

BlueBrian · 19/12/2020 13:14

Telegraph saying 4 pm
Rosehip10 · 19/12/2020 13:15

Could be kickdown from 28th like NI

Rosehip10 · 19/12/2020 13:15

Lock down

SKY is saying 4pm; so 15 mins after that, given recent form
Hangingover · 19/12/2020 13:15

My Xmas just got cancelled. DBro's close colleague just tested + and DF said best for us not to come. He is nearly 70 lives alone and is still mourning late DM. No other family, so he'll likely spend Xmas day alone. I'm at the other end of the country. I haven't seen him since Feb and I'm just sobbing rn. Sad

willsantausesantatize · 19/12/2020 13:16

Changing Christmas rules I guess. What more can they say? Will people comply?
:(
I suppose it's all needed but should have been done last week in England.

Butterymuffin · 19/12/2020 13:16

What's the point of announcing a press conference but not what time it'll be? They really are useless.

They were very strongly advised to lock down back in September and instead Sunak lined up a bunch of libertarian-funded ‘maverick scientists’ (this is code for ‘their colleagues think they’re twats’) and they decided to water measures down on these people’s advice.

They knew 5days of freedom would be popular so decided, what the hell, keep the proles happy (as if) and the results were going to be more deaths/long covid cases but with a faster-transmitted variant they’re so far fucked — or rather we are. Bad timing for the virus to do that but they knew there was a spike in cases as they were announcing the 5days so fuck them.
