all flights from uk to nl cancelled

due to the new strain that probably is circulating already via eurostar or ferries...

Covidnomore · 20/12/2020 08:59

pink i really do hope all countries shut their borders to us.

But its obvious this strain is circulating throughout Europe.

I suspect it was in Italy a few months ago as their numbers exploded when they had been stable for such a long time.

I may be completely wrong though!

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2020 09:01

@Covidnomore

The graphs yesterday clearly showed that hospital admissions in the South East at least was on a steep upwards projectory?
I saw ten percent, which doesn’t correlate to the 8ncreased cases in the previous weeks. Are you seeing different data?
BigWoollyJumpers · 20/12/2020 09:08

Agreed. Also, surely, the same strain will be found to be the cause of the rapid increase in Germany. Conjecture, but seems likely.
Covidnomore · 20/12/2020 09:17

Big yes. I think it is throughout Europe.

oneglassandpuzzled · 20/12/2020 09:40

Kingston upon Thames makes more sense now. A close family member lives in the less densely populated, leafy northern part of the borough, and until this week barely knew anyone in the surrounding streets who’d had Covid. Now it’s across the road and whereas before just one family member seemed to catch it, with the others uninflected, now whole households are infected.

The more contagious nature of the new strain explains why this is.

TheRubyRedshoes · 20/12/2020 09:42

Piggy in blankets, if true that's extremely concerning, is there a link please?

(teenagers in hospital)

Chaotic45 · 20/12/2020 09:45

@TheRubyRedshoes it may be the case in Kent but it isn't in Leicester or Nottingham. I have friends who work in paediatrics in both counties and they have not seen an uptick in admission amongst young people (but they very much have in adults).

tootyfruitypickle · 20/12/2020 09:54

Anyone watching Marr? Hancock looks a bit shaken. I find him a bit of an actor (fake crying) so not sure if it’s real or manipulative . But he is definitely giving out a different tone.

Oh really? I’m not watching but he’s a bit of a barometer when it comes to looking shaken
tootyfruitypickle · 20/12/2020 09:56

He’s said it is out of control in the south east

pinkbalconyrailing · 20/12/2020 09:57

he looks out of his depth no surprise he tries to get the soundbites in but am is keeping asking questions.

MarshaBradyo · 20/12/2020 09:57

Eep. Can you say if he talks about hospitalisation rates and ages? Thanks

tootyfruitypickle · 20/12/2020 09:59

He’s saying he’s worried about rates but no real details on ages. We’re nearly at where we were in the first peak (bit obvs it’s winter , so perhaps that’s not a surprise £

MarshaBradyo · 20/12/2020 10:02

Ok thanks

If anyone has links to hospitalisation in Kent with ages that would be great

Piggyinblankets · 20/12/2020 10:07

It's not official because it comes from a 'source' but it's in this article:

www.kentonline.co.uk/medway/news/major-backlog-as-hospital-reaches-capacity-239362/

MarshaBradyo · 20/12/2020 10:17

Hard to know numbers as a bit vague.

Be good to see break down and changes over recent time period. Googled but couldn’t see anything.

Chaotic45 · 20/12/2020 10:33

@Piggyinblankets the article says (according to a source)

"They also confirmed that Covid patients were now commonplace in every ward, including children's wards.
Also a "high number" of teenagers had been admitted with the illness."

That isn't the same as
"Kent Online yesterday reported that children's wards are full of Covid cases and that there has been a concerning increase in hospitalisation of teenagers."

I appreciate it is potentially worrying but we do need to be careful not to spread concern without evidence.

I feel confident that if more young people were falling seriously ill than have been doing so previously we would be hearing more about this from hospitals and the government. Let's face it the government needs to use all the tools that it can to make people listen!

I have double checked with my contacts at Leicester and Nottingham hospitals and they have not seen an increase in young people who are unwell due to Covid. However, They have seen more cases where children admitted for other reasons have gone onto test positive but without any symptoms of Covid.

vdbfamily · 20/12/2020 10:43

You need to separate hospital admissions from capacity of you want to know if the new strain is as deadly because in our hospital many patients are testing positive during their admission and then those people become really difficult to discharge is they are from a care home or have/ need a package of care. Most homes/ agencies are insisting on a negative swab which might not happen for 3 months. With elderly couples, the partner is saying they don't want to risk catching it so reluctant to have them home. This is causing gridlock with hospitals beds but these are not unwell people. We need a post Covid hotel really!! Incidentally, and I have just said this on another thread, many of the elderly frail patients who are testing positive are remaining asymptomatic, ( or very mild symptoms)even those with underlying conditions.

Piggyinblankets · 20/12/2020 10:44

I think the concerning increase bit was attached to the tweet which had the story. On Peston's Twitter account.

I posted that chaotic because of the assumption that it doesn't matter if there is a rise in case amongst young people because that won't lead to an uptick in hospital admissions, which also is not evidence based.

I simply cannot agree that the media report these thigs. a 15 year old with no underlying health conditions died about three weeks ago and the media certainly did not cover it.

How did you hear about the 15 year old?
Piggyinblankets · 20/12/2020 10:47

I think on this thread.

MarshaBradyo · 20/12/2020 10:49

I haven’t seen it linked could google maybe later, but I did see a link to media on another teen I remember the image (he didn’t have underlying conditions but was not a healthy weight)

That was reported

Piggyinblankets · 20/12/2020 10:51

More recent than that ( I think you are thinking of the 19 year old). It was in the daily release of deaths stats.

Lots of teenagers/ people in general aren't a healthy weight.

MarshaBradyo · 20/12/2020 10:53

I was being a bit understated as it’s a delicate issue he was very overweight.

But yes getting weight down should be happening. It’s hard to talk about as it’s in no way easy.
