Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!

@fedupfrances good point, if you can isolate before it shouldn’t matter what tier you’re in.

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 14:45

the inevitable result will be carnage in hospitals in January.

Let’s see shall we. Like I say, people said the same about BLM (many on this forum) and guess what, it never materialized.

I don't know what Leicester, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield expected, nor what they are complaining about. They know they are not the golden child/City.

MercyBooth · 15/12/2020 14:46

@Unsure33 He drove across the country WITH the virus. But Thank You You have proved my point about hypocrisy beautifully That kind of attitude of #oneruleforthem. is why there is buckleys hope of compliance
Tories gonna Tory

Mrbob · 15/12/2020 14:46

I WAS going to have it but if they do this.......nope!

Um the only person you are punishing here is yourself (oh and your family) What a weird way to “get back at” the shit leadership

chocolatesaltyxmaspudballs · 15/12/2020 14:46

You forgot Leeds @Zilla1

FatGirlShrinking · 15/12/2020 14:47

@fedupfrances

No it's not great and I haven't seen my elderly parents for months but I am sick of people ignoring the rules.

@lynsey91 if like me you’re barely going out for the two weeks before Christmas and your parents aren’t either, you’re driving straight to your parents’ house and spending Christmas at home with no contact with anyone else, then please tell me where is the risk?

The risk is in your use of the words 'barely going out' so not actually self isolating then to remove risk completely, just a bit of risk, but a bit of risk is a risk.

The simple fact is that the data shows that this virus is mainly spreading via socialising and working in indoors environments. Telling everyone they can have 3 households worth of people crammed into an average house is inviting large scale spread.

You cannot possibly argue that a load of people outside with masks on at a protest is the same as 6-21(ish) people with no masks, crammed into a 3 bed semi with the heating on full whack and windows closed, hugging and sitting cheek to jowl.

It is additional risk, it is highly likely to drive increased spread, increased cases, increased hospital admissions, increased deaths.

Bathroom12345 · 15/12/2020 14:48

I love people who say they are going to do what they like and then state they hate the additional restrictions.

ITS BECAUSE YOU ARE DOING WHAT YOU LIKE THAT IS CAUSING THIS!!

ClaireP20 · 15/12/2020 14:48

I'm sure they'll let 2 households meet up, so you'll be fine. X

FatGirlShrinking · 15/12/2020 14:49

@Chaotic45

Here in Leicester we have been unable to meet anyone indoors since March.

We had no financial help until some was negotiated thanks to Manchester, we've had no school testing and we've missed out on having a rapid test centre.

People are beyond despair.

When people are complaining how long they have been in this or that tier for can you spare us a thought please.

Yep!

MercyBooth · 15/12/2020 14:49

DC driving for several hours across the country WITH the virus is better than me WALKING half an hour up the road to my parents???

Of course they all have bladders of steel so wouldnt have needed the toilet on the way up. Its ridiculousness and hypocrisy like this that makes me fucking sick.

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 14:49

@FatGirlShrinking how is going to the park a risk?

EasterIssland · 15/12/2020 14:49

I hope they change their mind, it doesnt make sense that we're nt allowed to mix indoors but suddenly next day we're just because it's 23rd

TicTacTwo · 15/12/2020 14:49

@fedupfrances

the inevitable result will be carnage in hospitals in January.

Let’s see shall we. Like I say, people said the same about BLM (many on this forum) and guess what, it never materialized.

That was outdoors in summer and the majority of participants were young.

These gatherings will be indoors with windows closed and little social distancing (hugs, alcohol...) and people will be of all ages.

vanillandhoney · 15/12/2020 14:49

Nobody goes out in January and it’s a very quiet time for businesses anyway, so that would make sense

Clearly spoken as someone who's never worked in clothing retail during the Christmas sales! January used to be our second busiest month of the year in terms of takings - if a lot of clothing shops have to close during that month, I dread to think of how many will never re-open again.

Many have been forced to close for 4-5 months already - another lockdown would finish them. But hey, as long as we can all mingle over Christmas, those thousands of jobs don't matter, I guess.

ClaireP20 · 15/12/2020 14:50

How would one know?

Dave35 · 15/12/2020 14:50

Most people will break the rules anyway

MercyBooth · 15/12/2020 14:51

My family dont want it either. And i have tried to persuade them They are too angry at the moment though. And ive become angrier as well Its not conducive to thinking straight.

Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 14:51

@TicTacTwo

But it will be peoples fault because Whitty quite clearly said just because the rules are there you don’t have to do it ?

So we have a young CEV DIL and we will not see them or their children at all over Christmas. Because of risk to them

No family is the same
No situation is identical

I would like to think people are able to weigh up their own risk , but from some posts on here I doubt it .

It’s like saying here is a path very close to a cliff edge .There are people coming in the the opposite direction as well . You are allowed to run the path very fast or walk .what would you do ?

Or would you avoid the cliff path?

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 14:51

What a load of crap. Even if everybody had followed the rules to the letter, the virus would still be here. People have largely followed the rules (the latest lockdown being the most recent example) and it hasn’t worked - we’re still in tier 3 which is practically lockdown in all but name. Now people have had enough.

@TicTacTwo Speak for yourself................we are teetotal

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 15/12/2020 14:52

@bathroom12345

I have stuck to every single rule. They are not talking about bringing in extra restrictions because of people like me who have stuck to the rules and had Christmas dangled in front of us like a fucking carrot, only to be told (potentially) that we can't see our families now.

Don't confuse people who don't give a shit about rules, with people who have played ball, followed the rules but are now saying the government can fuck off

Loopyloui · 15/12/2020 14:52

My parents are coming over we are all isolating 10 days before and I have tests they can go screw themselves

My nurse neighbour just told me they can't cope at the hospitals because of lack of staff !!! So that is why we have some restrictions due to cuts over the years!

randomer · 15/12/2020 14:52

Hospitals in the North and the Midlands are really struggling, because we don't have the resources that London has

Correct

They're not an accountant, tax adviser or a self employed person either.

Most accountants seem to bust a gut all January doing accounts for people in time for the 31 Jan tax self assessment deadline. People would be screwed and accountants would lose a lot of business if any of those got ill in that time.

Good point about people staying at home only being able to do so because supermarket, delivery and warehouse staff are all at work bringing supplies to their door. Shamefully, I'd never looked at it like that.
