Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 14:33

They should but really there’s no point as if they do everyone will break the rules anyway 🤷‍♀️and I can’t see the police working Xmas day just to check every report of too many round the Xmas table
Will just need lockdown in jan/feb I guess

Nobody goes out in January and it’s a very quiet time for businesses anyway, so that would make sense. Tier 3 is bad enough but suddenly changing the rules for Christmas is absolute shite.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2020 14:33

Yes, I get it, you've just arrived home from space and your mixing households have just emerged from a submarine and nobody will see a soul between you and your Christmas day feast but this is not how the government makes policy.

Mousehole10 · 15/12/2020 14:35

Cancelling would be so unfair on those of us who have been pretty much isolating in the run up. There is very little risk of us meeting up with our family, everyone has been barely leaving the house. They should change it to tier 3 areas can’t meet up with others, and those who can’t isolate before, but how is it logical for everyone else?

BarbaraofSeville · 15/12/2020 14:36

It’s up to people in higher risk situations to make their own judgments about their own family situations and since we’re all adults, I’m sure the vast majority of people are perfectly capable of doing so

LOL. You only have to post questions such as 'should I leave my child in the car while I pay for petrol' or 'Is it OK to go to the shop 2 doors down while my baby is sleeping' to illustrate how poor most people are at making their own judgement about risk.

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 14:36

No it's not great and I haven't seen my elderly parents for months but I am sick of people ignoring the rules.

@lynsey91 if like me you’re barely going out for the two weeks before Christmas and your parents aren’t either, you’re driving straight to your parents’ house and spending Christmas at home with no contact with anyone else, then please tell me where is the risk?

TicTacTwo · 15/12/2020 14:36

They've said that they won't cancel it so will allow this madness to go ahead and blame people mixing for the inevitable spike in mid/end January

There are people who the rules should be relaxed for eg single people, people returning from university and they need to tweak things so people can change their support bubble during the period if needed but the cost of this free for all is far too high. Remember that 5 days of lockdown is needed to reverse 1 day of this free for all.

It's unfair on people who can't stay or work at home to pull the "we barely leave the house card" Half of jobs can't be done at home and it's people in shops, people delivering etc that allow people like you and your parents the choice not to go out (assuming no CEV people in yours or their household btw)

Hayeahnobut · 15/12/2020 14:36

Children need to go to school. Businesses do still operate, it's not quiet for all of them at all. Plus by that time the damage to the NHS is done, essential treatment is being cancelled now, but that's alright with you, isn't it?

So self centred.

myhobbyisouting · 15/12/2020 14:37

Same here @fedupfrances

I've taken my kids out of school and we're all isolating since Friday apart from one of the group who will be tested through work after the last shift tomorrow and then will isolate.

No shopping, no nothing. We've got everything we need already. The cars are filled with petrol, I have a food delivery coming with fresh stuff on 23rd, the day our bubble will arrive.

After month and months of tier 3 restrictions in an area that has extremely low rates of infection, plus our isolation period beforehand, I really will resent this being taken away now and if my family are happy to, the plan will go ahead.

Agree, apart from the tier 3 bit. If you’ve been pretty much isolating then it’s irrelevant what tier you’re in!
@Hayeahnobut did you not even read my OP? The risk is practically zero in my situation.
What about everyone else ? The UK can't decide the risk based on your situation.

AgeLikeWine · 15/12/2020 14:38

I hope the government does change the Christmas rules. Given the current situation in many parts of the country, a five-day free-for-all of intergenerational household mingling is asking for trouble and the inevitable result will be carnage in hospitals in January.

FairyAtTheBottomOfTheGarden · 15/12/2020 14:39

Apparently Michael Gove is going to have a call with the devolved nation leaders today to discuss it... news.sky.com/story/covid-19-gove-to-hold-talks-with-devolved-nations-over-relaxation-of-rules-at-christmas-12162548

MercyBooth · 15/12/2020 14:39

If they do this yet still allow "high value" individuals back into the country without quarantining they can shove their vaccine. I WAS going to have it but if they do this.......nope! My 70 year old DH doesnt want it due to no trust and the way we have been fucked about. 84 year old parents ditto. We are absolutely fed up to the back teeth of the chopping and changing the blaming of the public (Hancocks "dont blow it now")

T and T given to their rich mates rather than orgs who know what they are doing. My 25 yr old niece works as a SCHOOL escort and lives with my 84 year old parents. Are they going to put their money where their mouths and offer her alternative accomodation were she (God forbid) to test positive. To protect my parents who they are pretending to be concerned about. Of course they arent.

They discharged residents who tested positive back into care homes while banning families from visiting in case they brought the virus in. Sick of the hypocrisy bullying and psychological abuse. Sick of the emotional blackmail while it was fine and dandy for them to do these things.

Kay Burley Beth Rigby Dominic Cummings. Ok to sit on a plane and not quarantine if you are too important to do so.

Fuck off Boris Hancock etc.

I will NOT be your tokenism!!

Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 14:40

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady

So what’s the answer .

Have different rules for different Tiers?
Be blamed when there is a huge spike in January ?
And who do you think will police the rules ?

What do you want to happen and why and how should it be adhered to ?

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 14:41

So self centred

@Hayeahnobut how does spending Christmas with my parents make me self centred? Confused

Here in Leicester we have been unable to meet anyone indoors since March.

We had no financial help until some was negotiated thanks to Manchester, we've had no school testing and we've missed out on having a rapid test centre.

People are beyond despair.

When people are complaining how long they have been in this or that tier for can you spare us a thought please.

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 14:42

What about everyone else ? The UK can't decide the risk based on your situation.

We’re all adults. If you’re in a high risk situation then make the judgement not to see your family. If you’re extremely low risk (like me) then I don’t see the issue at all.

You've forgotten the people who have taken risks so you can self isolate. People like the person who picked your shopping, the drivers who delivered food to the supermarket and your home, the people in warehouses who load the food onto trucks, the people who keep your utilities working. It's good that you've lowered the risk to the family that you're seeing but you're in the privileged position of having others taking risks on your family's behalf and they shouldn't be punished for going to work and keeping the country ticking along.
YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 15/12/2020 14:42

Well, the government are pretty spineless and Johnson hasn’t got the balls he was born with so what they’re doing is saying ‘Go Forth!’ whilst knowing the Medical Establishment will be saying ‘Stay The Fuck Home’.

It allows the government to seem kindly and benign whilst hoping people pay heed to the scientists.

Fuckers. I hate this government more than I hated Thatcher.

MercyBooth · 15/12/2020 14:42

The way Leicester has been treated is despicable Ive said that several times under my previous username.

Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 14:43

@MercyBooth

? What you have written does not make sense . And DC did not break SD rules and had a special needs son . So not exactly relevant to your argument.

If you want to take the risk then I doubt you will be policed . So you are going to do what you want anyway by the sounds of it.

That’s awful

What’s the criteria for rapid testing?

Zilla1 · 15/12/2020 14:44

London - Tier 2 to tier 3 to tier 0 to tier 3 makes sense. to someone. probably. That said, it would be mildly surprising for the government to risk annoying the Daily Mail by 'cancelling Christmas', after all, the UK government is renown for the depth and consistence of its analysis and decision-making.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 15/12/2020 14:44

What is the answer to what??!

I want them to leave us alone and stop changing their minds. That would be the answer

AcornAutumn · 15/12/2020 14:44

Tic hear hear.
