Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!

@fedupfrances

Don’t think I’ve ever come across an OP so committed to her thread and responding.

Thanks! I’m just bored at home... what’s your excuse?

@herecomesthsun enjoy your trip to the supermarket... Grin

Shopping delivered courtesy of Ocado & Waitrose thanks. I have done my Christmas shopping entirely online.

That glib comment is not a rebuttal of the FACT that covid is primarily being transmitted through educational settings, by that way.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 21:56

@Bimbleboo that says more about your family members though and they would unlikely be going in bars and clubs unless they are all open in scotland ? If people don't respect others boundaries thats an issue , I have upset some family as I won't push some of the rules they want but so be it we all have our own ideas and own risk factors to take in to account

Turtleshelly · 15/12/2020 22:02

@MercyBooth

I'm getting pretty sick of short sighted people pointing the finger at others, virtue signalling and being sneery about mental health when the fact of the matter is this entire shit show could have been completely avoided had they done what they were told to do back in February. And they've cocked up constantly since, in more ways than I care to list

THIS

So very true. We could be facing a normal Christmas if we locked down faster and harder in the first place. I hate lock down but recognise you need to do them and do them right. This could have been over months ago

Ahhh, another “I’m alright Jack” Hmm There seem to be quite a few of them on this thread.

@TheWichitaWineOne Happy Christmas to you too!

Yes it definitely does say a lot about them. The way they’d behave was absolutely part of why we had to be the ones who said no, as we knew that would stop anyone even bothering to travel. If we aren’t entertaining the usual family Christmas, they'll all stay in their respective resident countries. They will sulk, and they are fairly pissed off. Lots of insinuating that we must just ‘not want to see them’ since the government have said it’s fine and I’m still ‘banning them for no reason’ because if it was ‘that bad then the government wouldn’t be saying we could go ahead’ Hmm

My point was about some people being unable to refuse meet-ups if the government have condoned them, due to family dynamics making that impossible for them to do without a lot of conflict. Lots of people won’t be able to shoulder the upset from family and will be pushed into it through emotional blackmail or histrionics.

So like you, I have upset family too. Mine is mostly because I am fully aware they won’t respect boundaries (or details of the laws, or the spirit of the guidance or anything else really that is inconvenient to them)

But a quick scour of the Xmas threads will tell you that a lot of people are unable to hold those boundaries and are caught in complex family situations where they are ‘having to’ meet up and mix, despite not personally wanting to, or feeling sage doing so, because of family pressure now that the government has allowed it.

I was just responding to the suggestion that if 64% want a u-turn then maybe that means 64% won’t mix anyway. I really don’t think that is the case.

I wonder if maybe the government saying no mixing, would then cause a decrease in mixing because these people could justify their choice not to bother.

Could be talking nonsense. But it makes sense to me

Trickyboy · 15/12/2020 22:16

Why can't people just stop behaving like toddlers and take some fucking personal responsibility. ?

Why would ANYONE take 'advice' from Johnson & Co ? I mean REALLY? You trust these people with your life ? Your Grandparents lives ?

Just understand the basics.

If you are in an enclosed space then you are more likely to contract the virus.
If you have school aged children they have a good chance of carrying it into the house hold as schools are rife with it.
Older people over 70 have a hugely increased chance of dying or suffering long term illness.

The virus doesn't give a fuck about Christmas.
The virus doesn't give a fuck about your financial situation , how much you have spent on Christmas, how disappointed your child/self/mother will be not to get together.

We ALL know how this works for gods sake !Now it's down to YOU to make that choice.See GPS with the strong chance they could die and YOUR child caused it based on your choices. The bed they take up in hospital and the associated resources means that someone doesn't get chemo this week...all choices. No law required.

You are also free to postpone Christmas.. until GPS are vaccinated. No one is forced to celebrate Christmas on the 25th.. everyone lives.

There is no way to square this circle.

Visit others for Christmas, increase death rates.
Don't visit. Less chance of death.

You just can't have both.

The chant of
Don't see them.

Dongdingdong · 15/12/2020 22:18

My point was about some people being unable to refuse meet-ups if the government have condoned them, due to family dynamics making that impossible for them to do without a lot of conflict.

This is just silly. You need the government to sort out your family dynamics? Just say no FFS!

PrincessNutNuts · 15/12/2020 22:19
@princessnutsnuts then why don't you tell them for her ? You can't expect the goverment to control your siblings , if your dad is an at risk person then your mum should say how worried she is and no sorry with you backing her assuming you are not visiting also
I have pointed out the risks.

But the denial is strong.

And my "don't rock the boat" mum is pinning all her hopes on the rules changing or sanity prevailing.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/12/2020 22:24

This is one time that the government actually could legislate for arseholes.

The facts are the facts. The people who risk giving covid to their families this Christmas know them.

But they'll take that risk if allowed to.

A significant number won't if it's against the rules.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/12/2020 22:27

@Trickyboy

It is about personal responsibility for me.

I'm not the sort of person who could blame it on my mum wanting to see the grandchildren if she ends up in hospital with covid because we did Christmas with her.

friendlycat · 15/12/2020 22:27

I simply agree with everything trickyboy has just said. It’s really quite starkly simple.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 22:29

@Trickyboy but lots are visiting others and not elderly just other siblings who are all working , have kids at school
My parents are in there 60's both working , going to the supermarket have a college age person living with them who Also has a job , all these things are a risk as well
Some have taken their kids out already and are staying home to limit the risk , something the goverment could if allowed
Many of these same at risk grandparents look after their grandchildren so there frontline worker children can go to work , so see these kids and have them in there home daily - does xmas suddenly put them at a bigger risk
Yes i agree suddenly visting an elderly person who has been pretty much isolating for first time in months is a big risk but lots of people are having these risks day in day out just to be able to go to
Work and school
How many older or at risk teachers are being put in a room everyday with 30 odd pupils ,

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 22:34

@PrincessNutNuts no i think its too late people who didn't intend to mix have made that decision , many who have made arrangements will do anyway
People even will be allowed even if we had tier 3 measures means still be mixing , single parents , people on their own etc are all allowed to form a bubble so their will be mixing regardless , other countries have relaxed a little for xmas .
What we should of had was a proper 4 week lockdown inc closing schools for a couple of weeks to get numbers down
Before lockdown my area had extremely low cases , now we have very high cases after a lockdown, makes no sense

cbt944 · 15/12/2020 22:37

I also agree with Trickyboy.

As a Bristol University epidemiologist, Gabriel Scally, said:

“There is no point in having a very merry Christmas and then burying friends and relations in January and February.”

RedRiverShore · 15/12/2020 22:42

Just said on the itv news that Boris ain't changing the rules for England but message will be strengthened

MercyBooth · 15/12/2020 22:43

I wonder if the Government are waiting until everyone has bought all their presents before thinking about bringing in further restrictions

Yep Thats why they announced the easing of restrictions in late November because a. we were sold the November lockdown as so to enable us to see family at Christmas b they wanted us to spend money.

The one thing this and Eid have in common is that they wanted ppl to spend their money first.

MercyBooth · 15/12/2020 22:46

Yet the virus magically stays away if a grandparent is doing childcare.

Brilliant, my plans can go ahead legally then 😀
zeeboo · 15/12/2020 22:58

I can't get my head around anyone thinking mixing indoors for 5 days is a good idea. Christmas can't be cancelled, it will be on December 25th the same as every year. It is what you make it and staying home is better for the country as a whole and for people's extended families.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/12/2020 23:00

@cbt944

I also agree with Trickyboy.

As a Bristol University epidemiologist, Gabriel Scally, said:

Yet that's exactly what thousands of British families are about to do.

They usually say something like that about 36 hours before he does... Wink
RedRiverShore · 15/12/2020 23:05

We could make a support bubble anyway so it doesn't affect us either way

myhobbyisouting · 15/12/2020 23:05

@Trickyboy

There is no way to square this circle.

"Visit others for Christmas, increase death rates.
Don't visit. Less chance of death.

You just can't have both."

We are planning on having both by all isolating. We've all been doing so for the best part of a week already and will continue until we meet.
