Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!

@dottiedaisee yes our oldies are avoiding us this Christmas. we've just got to keep our heads as best we can, those that can, should.

Benjispruce2 · 15/12/2020 17:17

I merely pointed out in my first post that we all knew this could happen so we need to prepare in whatever way we can, with whatever resources or freezer sizes or parents who help to cover a Christmas meal at home. Nobody mentioned filling a freezer. Get something in, be it a can of chickpeas or a chicken. That’s adult responsibility.

ifonly4 · 15/12/2020 17:18

On the question of xmas delivery slots mentioned earlier, I've been keeping an eye on the Iceland website. They only have slots until Saturday, but all are free, and they'll release others daily. If anyone has to or choses not to travel to family/friends, then it's worth considering if you can't face a supermarket shop.

Blue565 · 15/12/2020 17:19

At this point, if they do - a lot of people won't take a blind bit of notice and they know that. The police won't enforce it either.

What's far more likely to work is to reduce whats allowed. If you remove it entirely people will laugh, and do WTF they want..

Returnofthemaccys · 15/12/2020 17:19

Nobody should be mixing this Christmas.

PattyPan · 15/12/2020 17:20

I have followed all the rules to the letter so far but I would be willing to break them if Xmas mixing was no longer allowed. DP and I are self-quarantining from last Friday to Xmas day so we won’t be posing a risk to our families anyway, plus he had a negative test last week so it’s unlikely either of us would have it but be asymptomatic.

Whattimeisdinner · 15/12/2020 17:21

People worrying about deliveries... have you tried the CoOp? They offer same day delivery here.

Kazzyhoward · 15/12/2020 17:21

A Mori survey just on the News said 49% of people want the Xmas relaxations reduced/removed. Only 39% wanted them to remain. So there does seem to be public agreement not to have the relaxations.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 17:22

@luckylavender its a fact decisions are made on large portions of the population and how it will affect the masses , thats just life

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 17:23

@Kazzyhoward well no one ask me or anyone i know
These polls are pointless as normally they have asked 1000 people or something stupid

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 17:25

@marahcarey the same medical and scientists who have been wrong in the past as well the ones who insist schools are safe and covid secure

MisiSam · 15/12/2020 17:25

Does anyone know when they will announce it if they do change the restrictions? I have scrolled through the thread but its very long so apologies if this question has already been answered.

CoronaIsWatching · 15/12/2020 17:26

What I don't understand is people who have been sticking to "the rules" so far wanting to throw all that away for the sake of a few days. That means that they don't really believe in social distancing and lockdowns anyway and just doing what they're told to do, which is terrifying

Personally I've never believed in lockdowns and haven't stuck to the guidelines much so far but cases are soaring so common sense tells me to avoid my elderly parents this xmas. I will be spending it alone in my flat.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 17:26

@marahcarey op is also not the exeption many have plans most have downscaled them massively that I know but they still plan to have dinner with another household

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 17:28

@MisiSam no one knows its all guess work but the papers will release it before no doubt , most likely my guess would be weds when they review the tiers again

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 17:28

@CoronaIsWatching that depends where you live though if cases are rising and where you plan to visit

EnPoinsettia · 15/12/2020 17:29

@MisiSam Maybe one of the devolved nations will let it slip tout suite after the meeting with Pob.

CoronaIsWatching · 15/12/2020 17:29
@CoronaIsWatching that depends where you live though if cases are rising and where you plan to visit
Just go off your local tier

Benjispruce2 · 15/12/2020 17:30

None of the epidemiologists or virologists would promote this Christmas Covid fest. They advise, government make political decisions considering the economy etc in addition to the science. Covid doesn’t take Christmas off or stop at school gates. So if you’re not mixing now, why would you mix at Christmas? Unless you live alone and need support I think we just have to stay home.

MisiSam · 15/12/2020 17:30

Ah okay. Thankyou Xmas Smile

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 17:33

@Benjispruce2 they make decisions not just based on economy as well they also do take in to account how it will affect in other ways and compliance etc , what can be enforced.
You can't bring in something say like no one can leave there house unless you have the manpower to enforce it

Benjispruce2 · 15/12/2020 17:33

I realise that.

Vintagevixen · 15/12/2020 17:34

Yes I think they will be cancelling or at least amending the Christmas rules.

It's how this government make policy - leak it, see what reaction it gets, then mostly go ahead.

I have already anticipated this - for the first time ever I won't be seeing my elderly parents.

I did this because 1. I expected they would do a U turn and 2. Its sensible for my parents as DD was due to be in secondary school up until the 18th with not enough time to isolate (now off because of a positive test in her year group though.)

Could have seen my brother as his family is my support bubble anyway and they've all had it anyways, but have chosen to stay home to keep things simple. It will be just me and DD this year - I was very sad at first but planning a big Easter and a Christmas Day kitchen disco/seaside walk weather permitting!

Pan2 · 15/12/2020 17:35

No-one is 'cancelling Christmas'. We aren't a nation of children.

There is a deep concern about the spread of the virus, and consideration is being given for us to behave like grown ups, like in Germany and Italy.

Johnson is SUCH a coward though he will as likely not continue the cull coz he doesn't know how to lead, as has been evidenced.

That's it.

ifonly4 · 15/12/2020 17:35

Guess many of you have seen this, but if not, here it is:

"According to new polling by YouGov, by a margin of almost two to one people think the government should abandon plans to relax Covid restrictions over Christmas. Some 57% of people said there should be no special arrangements for Christmas, while 31% said the rules should be loosened for five days over Christmas as planned".
