New thread as I got worried the old one was going to run out of space!

I was wondering if one of the scientists (preferably a female one) could be nominated to be on the new £50 note when they make polymer ones (or does it have to be someone no longer alive..?)

Blerg · 16/12/2020 23:02

@Defenbaker thank you! I thought I’d been reading this thread avidly but missed that. Fingers crossed 🤞

FuzzyPuffling · 17/12/2020 07:31

I'd love some scientists to get new years honours ( not a scheme I believe in under normal circumstances). It would make a great and sensible change from elderly slebs and civil servants.

This needs to happen.
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2020 12:16

To be fair there are probably quite a few civil servants that deserve it this year, along with many, many people in the health service.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/12/2020 12:36

Family boast...my dad turned one down.He said you shouldn't get a going for just doing your job. His wasn't even offered for his day job!

I was thinking this morning that we need a vaccinometer so we can track progress through the priority groups. Like those thermometers used for charity fundraisers

sashagabadon · 17/12/2020 13:23

I think they should all get gongs! Why not Smile
Do they limit them usually? And even if they do I think this year is rather exceptional.
So many female scientists too.

MarshaBradyo · 17/12/2020 13:26

And the biggies for the scientists - Nobel variety

Yes outstanding contributions from females - saving the world and all.

100% agree. There’s loads of unsung heroes. ONS guys have worked tirelessly and been brilliant. All the testing lab staff, the army, everyone involved in vaccine procurement and delivery ( in addition to the scientists), so many others. There’s a few of here that pick fault with everything and seem to begrudge good news, but I often wonder what their contribution was. What did they do to help? And complaining on Mumsnet is not an answer Grin

That would be a great motivator wouldn't it, like a live tracker to see how much of the population is being vaccinated, in what age groups etc. I'm surprised they haven't done this as a PR thing if for no other reason.

I saw below thread that the 22nd might be d day for Oxford vaccine - can anyone shed light on this? I was hoping it'd be through by now (going by how long it took to approve Pfizer)!

I guess it could backfire if the numbers don’t look great!

I don’t know anymore about the Oxford vaccine - I wonder how reliable the 22nd was? Not sure what we’ll do if it’s not approved or if they require additional evidence

fadingfast · 17/12/2020 14:28

I know this isn’t on the spirit of the thread, but is there any risk that the Oxford vaccine won’t get approved??

cathyandclare · 17/12/2020 14:36

Yes, they may ask for more information.

BUT in the spirit of the thread, the VP of AZ said on Panorama that they expect results from the big US arm of the trial within weeks. They've recruited lots of people ( I think 30,000 although that may be ongoing) and they're getting lots of events, which is speeding things up. So, they are likely to have more data for the regulators in January.

This is the American arm of the trial.
www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/phase-3-clinical-testing-us-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-candidate-begins

As a pure Phase 3 trial, the data is likely to be less complicated than the current interim release.

cathyandclare · 17/12/2020 14:38

I'm not saying it's likely, just that it's possible.

TheChineseChicken · 17/12/2020 14:47

I can’t wait for someone to post on here that it’s been approved

chri55ie · 17/12/2020 15:35

Me neither! I am checking a lot.

I did read that the Chair of the NHS David Prior did say he hoped it would be approved within days and that was on Saturday so really hoping it’s soon.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/12/2020 15:37

Anyone want to find out when they might get their vaccine?

www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-uk

I'm really hoping it's better than this, as mine might not be until the end of April, and I'm CV. But a bit of fun!

OP posts:
chri55ie · 17/12/2020 15:47

Sorry back on Oxford being approved Sarah Gilbert was very certain that it would be approved by end of year latest so I’m sure being a reputable scientist that is what she genuinely thinks!

IcedPurple · 17/12/2020 16:01

I'm hoping that the Sarah Gilbert interview and the Panorama programme were a prelude to the imminent authorisation of the Oxford vaccine.

Between June and September 2021 for me. Damn me being young and healthy! 🤣
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2020 16:19

I am June-September Grin

Seriously, they have assumed a maximum speed of a million a week but subject to supply it could actually go a lot faster than that, given medium sized gp practices have been doing 400+ a day and there are supposedly going to be 1200 gp practices involved plus hospitals and big centres.

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel, you must be similar in age to me. I'm 35.
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2020 16:22
