New thread as I got worried the old one was going to run out of space!

I don't have anything appropriate to say on a good news thread if it doesn't.

midgetem · 27/12/2020 12:08

Thanks guys that sets my mind at rest, as I said I understand the need to protect teachers and presumably it will help to protect children but selfishly I wanted a bit of life back! A 3 and 6 year old are not the greatest company especially after 9 months haha!

BessMarvin · 27/12/2020 13:21

I love this thread!

Has anyone seen anything definite about what the vaccine will mean in terms of things becoming more normal? I'm getting really frustrated reading people on other threads smugly stating that just because people are being vaccinated doesn't mean anything will change. I doubt they know anything, just love making people feel miserable for some reason.

AlexandraEiffel · 27/12/2020 13:42

I don't know anything definitively, I'm not sure anyone does till the impact of the vaccination on public health is seen. But politically I can't see the government being able to get extended lockdowns past their back benchers once rates start to drop. They're not happy on economic or libertarian grounds. So whilst I agree in the short term vaccination isn't a pass back to life as was, once the rates start coming down it will become hard politically to continue extensive measures. Boris won't want a fight that undermines his leadership.

midgebabe · 27/12/2020 13:56

Thus guarantibg repeated additional lockdowns and restrictions until the vaccine rollout is sufficient to have a real affect on hospitalisation level

MarshaBradyo · 27/12/2020 14:00

It’s quite a low proportion to have big impact. 7% of population? Iirc Anyone else see this?

I think we’ll have more freedoms but not total for a bit. But what and see

MarshaBradyo · 27/12/2020 14:01

Wait

AlexandraEiffel · 27/12/2020 14:11

Yes I recall seeing something that talked about the % of hospitalisations that would be avoided through vaccinating a % of the population. I don't recall the numbers but it really didn't take many vaccinated (as a %) to have a massive impact. I imagine I read it on one of these threads.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/12/2020 14:18

Yes, this was the link much earlier on in the thread with the big impact that you can make by immunising a small amount of the population. I've just linked on another thread. It doesn't include the front line health care staff that are being jabbed alongside the very elderly so it's not a neat overlay on the real world roll out but gives a good indication about how quickly a dent can be achieved.

That's a great article @FourTeaFallOut thank you for sharing again!

FourTeaFallOut · 27/12/2020 15:25

I can't take any credit for it. Someone else posted it ages ago and, like a magpie, I nicked it and keep it around to make me happy.

BessMarvin · 27/12/2020 18:26

Thanks for all the info and replies. I guess they don't want to make big promises too far ahead of time but I agree it's got to start relaxing once more become fully vaccinated.

tobee · 27/12/2020 18:57

Does anyone know if they'll still be Pfizering people when (if) the Oxford Vaccine rolls out?

Wonder if they'll even use Moderna?

Presumably allergies etc may come into play?

TeaInTheGarden · 27/12/2020 19:47

Just watching Dr John Campbell, he’s fab. He has just uttered the word TOMORROW when discussing approval of oxford.... eeeek!!

FuzzyPuffling · 27/12/2020 19:53

Come on Oxford. You are my Christmas wish.

I saw today's but he was wearing a different shirt. Is that today's? Xmas Grin

chri55ie · 27/12/2020 20:20

Yes I’ve just watched it too and he seems quite certain that approval is Monday. Keeping everything crossed!

TeaInTheGarden · 27/12/2020 20:21

Yes I think so...! Maybe I’ve posted wrong link?! Confused 😂

TeaInTheGarden · 27/12/2020 20:24

This is the one! Good spot @tobee!

tobee · 27/12/2020 20:25

Lol!

chri55ie · 27/12/2020 21:05

Let’s have a pact that we won’t be too disappointed if it isn’t tomorrow....

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 27/12/2020 21:06

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I have ordered an exercise bike online so I'm really hoping it gets through to me soon. I'm going to really struggle over the next few weeks I think so if I can get on it most days and really get fit, it would help mentally a lot I think.

I've also started on some drawing classes on Domestika. I'm terrible at drawing and am very tickled by the idea of coming out of the pandemic with a dazzling new skill. Unlikely but I can dream.

Thank you for all the positivity on here. It never ceases to amaze me how negative some are on here.

TeaInTheGarden · 27/12/2020 21:08

@chri55ie I’m in- I will try my best!

Ahhh! Might find that hard! 😩

FuzzyPuffling · 27/12/2020 21:38

We will hang on in there together, following the science and refusing to be downbeat. Just like we always do.
( But my fingers are still still crossed! 🤞🤞)
