Do you think the whole of London will be put into Tier 3?

Will the Christmas relaxation period of 5 days still stand?

The BBC have just published an article in which they have been told London WILL be Tier 3

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55301192
Covid: London likely to move to tier 3 amid rising rates

London faces a move to tier three - England's highest level of coronavirus restrictions - in the coming days, the BBC has been told.

Ministers and officials are said to be "deeply concerned" about a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases across the capital.

The BBC's Hugh Pym reports London MPs have been briefed on the latest data, with a move to tier three now believed to be possible as soon as today.

But our health editor said no final decision has been made.

Just to point out that the review isnt supposed to be for another two days and there is now talk of moving up London BEFORE that review.

Tbh having seen the numbers and with the Christmas relaxation in mind, knowing the pattern in the North West all too well its probably too little to late and there is going to be a major problem in the coming weeks. But the government wants to be seen to be doing something rather than cancelling the relaxation.

I genuinely would be avoiding all travel in an out of the cancel for Christmas related activities or visiting family. And its irresponsible to do so.

PinkPlantCase · 14/12/2020 11:46

People travel all across London for work so separating our boroughs would be pointless.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 11:55

Good for her. Mental health is extremely important

Yes of course it is but the point is that there are many other people also suffering with mental health who are sticking to the rules.

When is the 5 day period?

OP posts:
AcornAutumn · 14/12/2020 11:58

@bendmeoverbackwards

All the tiers are due for review on 16th but I think that doesn’t kick in till the 19th?

I hope that's true. My dd has something important to her on the 17th.

I think we spoke before

Trouble is, government by diktat means they chuck everything out of the window

I hope it works out okay for her.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 12:02

Thank you @AcornAutumn this particular thing she has been waiting for FOUR years to do. Each time it didn't go ahead for a different reason.

Don't know if this will be an announcement but on the bbc article:
Health Secretary Matt Hancock is due to make a statement in the House of Commons at 15:30 GMT.

kirinm · 14/12/2020 12:10

@DameCelia

That's ok then *@kittensarecute as long as your* mental health is ok eh?
My MIL died about 3 weeks ago. She was absolutely terrified of Covid and so her son, her granddaughter and I only saw her about 3 times. Now she's dead and we won't ever see her again.

She died alone and frightened.

RedToothBrush · 14/12/2020 12:11

The review was due Wednesday to come into effect two days later (so after midnight Friday). That's now looking like it MAY be brought forward. Which makes sense if they are worried about a repeat of the parties that happened in Liverpool and Nottingham given that Friday is the last Friday before Christmas and utterly notorious in normal years as being messy.

AcornAutumn · 14/12/2020 12:13

I’m really sorry. It’s horrific what’s been done to people. Hugs and Flowers

PhilCornwall1 · 14/12/2020 12:15
  • I wouldn’t bet on that

They may cancel it and say stay in tier rules.*

You can also bet on people ignoring that then.

Thank you. It is hideous. Her funeral was extremely limited in numbers and you have the awful site of people sitting far away from each other, not being able to comfort each other, head covered in masks.

The covid-rules were broken consequently as otherwise what are the siblings meant to do - not see each other? Not be around each other to support each other when they're all distraught?

I dont think you can do it borough by borough. Its unworkable. I live in one, work in a neighbouring borough, I'm not unusual.

ImPrincessAurora · 14/12/2020 12:20

Matt Hancock is speaking today at 3.30 I believe

kittensarecute · 14/12/2020 12:20

@Bluegreen70

Wow..that's a bit harsh. Uncalled for.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/12/2020 12:20

@bendmeoverbackwards

Yes that's true I suppose *@Hardbackwriter* I really feel for London hospitality businesses who will be facing permanent closure Sad
There's been a lot of hospitality closures elsewhere in the country. The hospitality industry in London isn't a special case.

Hope he clears up the school situation while he’s at it. Ridiculous
Weedsnseeds1 · 14/12/2020 12:29

We're in tier 3 at 114/100 000, Havering is 470/100 000. Other boroughs also very high rates, so I don't see any logic for London staying in tier 2.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 14/12/2020 12:34

I really feel for hospitality businesses in my area who are facing closure because we were put in tier 3, even though our covid rates are low and our hospital is in tier 2. All because we were lumped in with a city 60 miles away that isn’t even in our county.

And they’ll bring forward the decision for London, but I bet they don’t review tiers for the rest of us until the 16th.

AtlasPine · 14/12/2020 12:34

Things we have seen recently in our community - self harm, attempted suicide, psychosis, severe depression, break downs. You can’t know what someone else’s pain is, only your own.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/12/2020 12:35

At this time of year, there won't be a significant impact in London unless they close the shops. A real problem is people coming into London and taking infection back to their home towns.

OTH London is usually deserted between Christmas and NY.

Surely Bearing in mind London's impact on the overall economy there is an argument for vaccinating London as a priority?

MaudesMum · 14/12/2020 12:35

The thing with London is that it's also a national centre, so theatres, museums, galleries etc are a resource for the country as a whole. And in many cases these have just re-opened after Lockdown 2 - if London goes into Tier 3 they'll all have to close again - with absolutely no evidence that they've had any impact on Covid.

MissEllaWater · 14/12/2020 12:37

@Bluegreen70 what a dreadful thing to say.

I took what @kittensarecute said to mean the relaxation of rules, not her own personal relaxation. Not that it matters. I've seen Kittens' posts elsewhere and she's really struggled, as have so many of us (and no, mental health is not less important than Covid). I've reported your post.

@kittensarecute enjoy your Christmas with family and I hope that once spring is on the way we'll have turned a corner, and you'll be able to do the things you love again Flowers

movingonup20 · 14/12/2020 12:39

As we are tier 3 with a rate of 70 per 100k all because a city 15 miles away in a different county has a rate of 220 per 100k then London needs to be in a new tier 5 ... or not of course London has special rules because mps live there.Angry
