Has Boris got the balls to cancel Xmas for London?

Gobacktothe90s · 11/12/2020 19:55

Obviously the answer is no, but the huge increase in cases in London should tell anyone it's not a good idea for Xmas mixing. How high will the rates go before he has to step in?

I think rather than cancel Xmas for the worst hit areas the only thing he would do is cancel Xmas mixing for everyone and do a complete u turn rather than single London out.
If however the North west still had high rates he would have no hesitation In stopping the north west mixing at Xmas but allowed other areas to mix.

@nancy75

Exactly, he wants to remember the red wall up here can be rebuilt!

Well at least that would be a positive that comes from this. Hopefully all those ‘red wall’ voters that lent Boris their vote will take it back next time.

Yes it does give Labour some hope against any landslide situation
sashagabadon · 12/12/2020 17:54

Not everywhere London. RBKC and LBHF and Westminster and Camden I think too are pretty low relatively speaking. My own borough has been falling. The Essex/ Kent border boroughs seem to be worse affected but they are not “London” .
Anyway I have no idea if London will go into tier 3 next week or not. It may be a help to some hospitality businesses anyway as my understanding is they get more financial help than in tier 2. I think this is why Sadiq wants it as he’ll get some cash to hand out.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2020 17:56

What’s your area like Sasha?

We went out today and it was booming. Zone 2. So many people eating and shopping. I think the area has increased demand since this happened.

sashagabadon · 12/12/2020 17:56

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Dh was just reading something to me today about how the Red Wall are seriously pissed off and mooching back to Labour🤞🏻
I honestly think that’s wishful thinking - my husband thinks that too but I think he’s wrong
sashagabadon · 12/12/2020 17:57

I was up in Hyde park today. It was lovely. Had lunch and walk around. Pretty busy on the tube but not like a normal year with the hideousness of winter wonderland to contend with Grin

DateLoaf · 12/12/2020 18:05

In answer to the OP, no, he doesn’t. He’s into populism, plus he wants to be personally popular. On public health grounds he probably should do that and the same for anywhere else with similar rising rates, following the scientists’ advice with different rules at very local level. But hell would seriously freeze over before he did that.

VerlynWebbe · 12/12/2020 18:40

I think one thing we don’t often say: Boris Johnson is quite thick and highly distractable. He won’t be doing anything soon about London/SE because it will take time for his advisers to get through to him the seriousness of the situation. He is getting Brexit done so making a decision about this will be too much, especially if it’s an unpopular decision.

Unsure33 · 12/12/2020 18:58

It’s not all about north and south . Bristol is in T 3 . And from what I hear the hospital has very high numbers of covid patients.

Whattheactual20201 · 12/12/2020 19:09

Out of curiosity why just London this whole London rates are sky high isn’t really the case per 100,000 we are no where near where Manchester etc was.
There’s about 4 or 5 boroughs our of 36
which are above 200.

AlwaysLatte · 12/12/2020 19:09

Sorry, you lost me at 'Has Boris got balls...?'

Whattheactual20201 · 12/12/2020 19:10

@sashagabadon most of them have similar rates to Kensington and Chelsea and H&F ( H&F was second worse for a while after ealijf but numbers started coming down
Richmond was one of the highest to that has also come down.

I think the only places in London which are really struggling is Harrow.

AlwaysLatte · 12/12/2020 19:14

Joking aside, isn't this a bit of an outdated expression? Doesn't 'got the balls' mean 'being manly?' Thinking about the successes of female leaders globally recently maybe we should say got the tits got the courage?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/12/2020 19:15

It’s not all about North and South, no it’s not.

But it is about London centricity

VerlynWebbe · 12/12/2020 19:23

Oh god now I’m picturing Boris’s tits
He has got quite a pair
🤮

Whattheactual20201 · 12/12/2020 19:24

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow most of London are below average on per 100,000 🤷‍♀️

tenredthings · 12/12/2020 19:43

Call me a cynic but I'm sure Boris is more concerned with how he can use covid to distract us from
No Deal Brexit than caring about people's health. I imagine he'd prefer lots of people out and about spending for Xmas followed by a new year of tight restrictions to stop any possible civil unrest or protest at the shit show that he's unleashed.

It's been a perfect year for him really, keeping us all at each other's throats and under lock and key while the Brexit shit show unravels.
DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 12/12/2020 20:18

Plus gives a lovely excuse so any negative effects of Brexit can be sold as Civid-Related recession. Bet he couldn't believe his luck.

TicTacTwo · 12/12/2020 20:53

SAGE will suggest it and then he'll remain silent and let them take the blame. Anything to distract from No Deal Brexit.

VerlynWebbe · 12/12/2020 20:57

Exactly. Why would he change his tactics now? Everyone’s letting him get away with it.
Dateloaf · 12/12/2020 23:06

I agree that we’ll have Christmas so he can avoid the Grinch headlines, then be locked down hard soon afterwards to avoid Brexit unrest.

islockdownoveryet · 13/12/2020 08:16

Then be locked down hard soon afterwards to avoid Brexit unrest.

What does lock down hard mean ?
Can't see family but can go to work , it's been like that for months in greater Manchester.

Chailatte20 · 13/12/2020 08:52

With the infection numbers rising in my borough, somebody intelligent needs to make a decision soon. I think all schools should end term on Friday 18 Dec as planned but return on Monday 11 Jan instead. This will include the 14 days self isolation needed from the 28 Dec, which is the last day of Christmas socialising.

I'm worried about sending my kids back to school in Jan because most of their friends will socialise over Christmas. One school mum is having 20 Christmas dinner guests, her choice to break the rules. However, her decision will put my child at risk of covid when kids return to school on 4 Jan. So 11 Jan should be the standard school return date.

I'm surprised that nobody thought about the risk of reinfection when kids return to school on the 4th of Jan. After mixing at Christmas, the infection rates will rise again in mid January. So people should either take a test before returning to school or work in Jan or delay returning by a week.

School staff should be prioritised for the vaccine roll out as that will curb covid in schools.

Chailatte20 · 13/12/2020 08:56

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/554316

Prioritise school staff for the vaccine roll out.

Unsure33 · 13/12/2020 09:01

Why can’t people make their own decisions based on their areas ?

Are you all lemmings ? Just because you can do something does not mean you should ?

If he banned Christmas the rule breakers would not listen anyway so what’s the point .?
