Anyone gone in shops all the time and not caught COVID?

Just wondering if there are any posters who go shopping all the time (more than 2 times a week) and places indoors like pubs, cinemas etc and haven't caught it?

I know supermarket workers don't seem to have been affected as much as I would have thought being inside all the time and around customers but curious to know if any posters haven't restricted their shopping or going anywhere but not caught it

None of us have had it.

DD2 and DD3 both worked in different supermarkets throughout the first lockdown and much of the summer and DD3 is now a first year university student. She has been tested almost weekly in her hall of residence and been negative every time.

I've done the family shop every week as usual since the start of the first lockdown, sometimes needing a top up shop too. I've used most of our local shops too (most are food related, or the pharmacy so have been opened.

I did also go to some non-essential shops on the High Street when they were open in the summer and will do again in the run-up to Christmas.

We had to go and visit my elderly parents, which involved a couple of nights in a hotel plus use of restaurants after those had all reopened.

I had to use the tube in London a couple of times and also travel by intercity train.

I do wear masks where legally required to do so. I've never been a big socialiser, hate big gatherings and have never been keen on people encroaching into my personal space, so I am a fairly natural social distancer anyway.

Not all the time, I order online. I don't know if I've had Covid - not to my knowledge. I have been to pubs every week when allowed, sometimes indoors and sometimes out. I go to the little shops a couple of times a week. I have two children going to school and a childminder. Also used public transport but only once or twice, as I drive anyway. What else... petrol stations a few times. Restaurants.

Firebird83 · 10/12/2020 18:39

I go to shops all the time and haven’t had it. In fact, I don’t actually know anyone who has had it. I do live in the SW though.

SmileyClare · 10/12/2020 18:40

Op if you're asking if "Anyone has gone into shops all the time and not caught covid?^ did you think it would be inevitable that nearly every regular shopper had?

I'm not sure of your thinking behind this question but hope you've been reassured. I'm not saying we should all cram into shops and throw caution (and restrictions) to the wind but it's important to keep perspective.

To be fair, I don't know anyone who has been going into indoor places; pubs, cinemas or "going out socially" several times a week. It hasn't been possible with all the restrictions.

Coasterfan · 10/12/2020 18:45

I haven’t had it and we ve been to pubs and hotels, theme parks about 60 times, supermarket or petrol station daily and I ve been back out working two days a weeks since June. I wear a mask and distance in all of the above places, most of them are outside though, the pubs I ve been to have felt safe and the supermarket I just pop in for five minutes for cigarettes, sometimes snacks etc if I m working from home.

Coasterfan · 10/12/2020 18:46

Just to add DH catches 4 buses a day and the DC are in school. Reading both my posts back I think we ve been lucky!

Didyousaynutella · 10/12/2020 19:04

Gwenyfar - that just isn’t true. If you do get symptoms and you work on the frontline in A&E but pop in to Sainsbury’s on your way home a couple of times a week you are probably going to put it down to catching it in a&e. But it might well have been the keypad you used to pay.

The op was asking is people have been to shops a lot and not caught it. 43% is a large number. They may well lave caught it and not realised.

SomelikeitHoth · 10/12/2020 19:13

Yes I've gone to the shops every day, even on lockdown just to get out for a walk.

Remmy123 · 10/12/2020 19:16

I've been in and out of many shops since March and don't always wash my hands and I do not use hand sanitizer etc

MrsGrindah · 10/12/2020 19:17

This is impossible to say because you’d need to test 100 percent of the population on a regular basis to really know who has or has had it.

The point is an (estimated) 57% of positive cases do show symptoms. That's a larger number. It would be detectable if shops were hotbeds for transmission. So no, most people who go in shops regularly haven't caught cv and don't realise. You can base that on symptomatic cases.

Me!

I volunteer four hours a week in a charity shop - wearing a visor, not a mask. I'm in Asda or Aldi at least once a week, and then other places like Waitrose or Lidl too. I never sanitise my trolley although I do try to maintain social distance. I've never washed my shopping, quarantined my post or deliveries. We made huge use of eat out to help out, I've been to cafes several times with friends.

Bet there are thousands like me.

CeeJay81 · 10/12/2020 20:02

I work 30 hours a week in a supermarket. I go out for a coffee most weeks with a friend. Last week we went for a pub lunch instead. Don't go anywhere else though, haven't been in anyone's house since the summer. Haven't caught it knowingly. I believe your more likely to catch it going to someone's house than shopping. None of the staff at my work place have had it unless it was asymptomatic.

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/12/2020 20:09

We all think we had it last December. We all go out regularly. Pubs and shops when they are open. EOTHO was a regular 2 or 3 times per week.
Dd regularly sees her friends and I doubt that they are SD

None of us wore masks till we had to.

Infact we bought some medical masks just so we could go into shops, tube etc and we tend to fish one out of the glove compartment when we need one then stuff it back when we are finished.
I am sure that they at this point are a placebo rather than a protection as it says they only last for 4 hours and we have been using them for months

Missingthebridegene · 10/12/2020 20:10

I've been into pubs and restaurants, softplay, toddler classes, shopping twice a week and work into ICU and I've not had it!

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/12/2020 20:17

Plus we have never sanitised our shopping or our post or done anything different from normal life apart from mask wearing and a bit of SD.

Even during the first lockdown we were shopping daily and were ordering stuff for collection at diy stores and had workmen in the house.

amicissimma · 10/12/2020 20:21

I've been going to the supermarket two or three times a week as I want to keep eating fresh fruit and vegetables. I get a coffee every day, either queuing for a takeaway or sitting in when it's allowed. I've been eating out quite frequently when we can. I also shop in 'non essential' shops from time to time and places like B&Q when necessary. I've been in trains and to London a couple of times. To church every week when it's open.

I've no reason to think I've had Covid. I haven't felt funny or unwell at all.

Today's figures show that 1,787,783 people have tested positive in the UK. That's 2.67% of the population. Even allowing for shortage of tests in March, say double have tested positive, would be 5.34% of us, some of whom will have been asymptomatic. So the vast majority of us haven't had it. Even if some of the 94.66% of us have had it without knowing, there's no reason to think it's a large number.

So the answer to the OP is, the majority of people.

Didyousaynutella · 10/12/2020 20:23

You can’t smiley because most people go to the supermarket and if they are doing other things they are most likely to put it down to that.

SmileyClare · 10/12/2020 20:44

Yes no one can pinpoint where they caught a virus. It feels like we're going in circles a bit here Grin

If you're asking Has anyone shopping regularly not caught covid? Then i can confidently say Yes millions of people have not caught covid while shopping, visiting a pub, going to work or any other activity that involves other people. The majority of the population have not caught covid.

ValancyRedfern · 10/12/2020 20:47

Most people go to supermarkets and most people haven't had Covid. I'm a teacher in school 5 days a week and go to the supermarket at least once a week and haven't had it.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 10/12/2020 21:05

I go to the shops all the time, have done all along. But I've also been at work all along, so meh.

Lovemusic33 · 10/12/2020 22:02

Probably 3 or 4 times a week, I go into a corner shop when I’m working (2 times a week), supermarket once or twice a week, went into town with dd on Sunday, ate in a pub and went into several shops. I wear a mask, I use hand gel and I spray my trolley/basket. I suspect I had covid in March. I probably go out less than I did just because of the hassle of having to use gel and spray everything in each shop.
