Anyone gone in shops all the time and not caught COVID?

Just wondering if there are any posters who go shopping all the time (more than 2 times a week) and places indoors like pubs, cinemas etc and haven't caught it?

I know supermarket workers don't seem to have been affected as much as I would have thought being inside all the time and around customers but curious to know if any posters haven't restricted their shopping or going anywhere but not caught it

I don't think your premise is quite right - the risk of catching it is very high compared (as your risk of catching a cold in any given winter is), its the risk of serious illness and/or death that has been grossly over exaggerated by many groups. As I said, c12% in over 85s but in any other age groups really very low risk. Many people in CEV groups also have a reasonably low risk, and many may have a high risk of hospitalisation but a low risk of fatality.

Of course, different people will perceive that in different ways. I have a 1 in c20,000 risk of fatality from covid, which I think is non-existent but other people may think is too high. If I was over 85 I'd likely think an 88% chance of survival was plenty high enough to live however I liked...

Supermarket every week all through both lockdowns , plus occasional one-offs to local shops if I'd forgotten something that couldn't wait a week, but I've sanitised my hands and trolley/basket handle every time & worn a mask.

Once the restrictions were lifted after lockdown 1 I've ventured into nearby large town a few times & been to cafes etc while there, but been masked in shops & sanitised hands etc.

WillingWarlock · 10/12/2020 13:17

Yes. I live in walking distance of a large town centre. I have been going to shops when they are open, two or three times a week. Taken kids to crazy golf, theme park, cafes, zoo etc. Travelled on buses and trains. I haven't caught it, don't know anyone directly who has either. However, until now I have always been in areas with pretty low infection rates. Our infection rate is now climbing, and I do feel more anxious now, I wear my mask all the time in town not just in the shops for example.

UglyHoose · 10/12/2020 13:18

I've been working right through in a school, DS has been working in people's houses / factories etc and I have a child in secondary where there have been lots of cases in her year and on the (school) bus that she travels on.

I've been in shops, pubs, restaurants, and even managed a holiday and a weekend break in the summer.

I wear a mask, I distance (apart from at school where the kids get up in your face), I wash my hands regularly and hope for the best.

MaudesMum · 10/12/2020 13:21

Yep. I only go to the supermarket once a week, but also go shopping in local shops probably 2-3 days a week - sometimes going from shop to shop. Have only been to the theatre once - but that's because they've not been open much. I ate out in the summer with other people, but now all the Tier rules have changed, I can only eat indoors by myself (single person household) and there's no fun in that. Most of the shops I go to have small no.s of people allowed in at any time, and I've never felt anything other than really safe in them.

TempsPerdu · 10/12/2020 13:24

Of course. I’m in London and have done everything I’ve been allowed to do according to the guidelines - have a toddler so have even spent more than my fair share of time clambering around soft play when it’s been open. Have been shopping regularly and visited cafes, restaurants, the zoo etc, plus various tourist attractions while on holiday in September. Also taken DD for short journeys on the train a few times.

Not had covid as far as I’m aware, although at 40 and in good general health it’s quite likely I’d be asymptomatic if I did. None of my close friends have knowingly had it either (although acquaintances/friends of friends have).

Someonesayroadtrip · 10/12/2020 13:24

We have Covid and avoided shops all year. We have of course been to shops but only about 15 times in since the first lockdown max! Think, despite what the government keeps tell us, it cane via school asymptotically.

AstridAv · 10/12/2020 13:25

I've been in shops and to physio appointments weekly. Been fine. My son has just tested positive and caught it in his primary school class of 8 children.

ChasingRainbows19 · 10/12/2020 13:30

I’ve not knowingly had covid and I’ve been out and about especially July-September: I supermarket shopping once a week thought it, use hand sanitizer and masks. In aldi so quick shopping! We have a top up shop at the local shop if needed. I’ve been in other shops like b&q, clothes shops a handful of times. Same care and distancing where possible.

I’ve eaten out when able ( greater Manchester restrictions seemed to have lasted forever) but only 1:1 no groups. Most places it’s been very organised and felt as safe as can be. We went to the lakes twice over summer and followed distancing and hand sanitising and was fine. I’ve been on the odd bus to help a relative, cleaner than before, less people allowed, masks on.

Oh Ive worked on a ward throughout and with some positive patients too. So maybe the ppe isn’t so bad after all Hmm....

Namechangeforthis111 · 10/12/2020 13:37

I would like to see more cold hard facts on how and where it is caught. They should have much more information on this now surely? (If there is I haven’t seen it!)

I don’t just mean where but how. Eg mask vs no mask. Distancing vs not etc. Outdoor vs indoors. I think that would help us deciding how to manage our own risk.

Generally I feel ok shopping, unless anyone gets too close to me in a queue for a long time or the shop is very busy....but I may be completely wrong.

Delatron · 10/12/2020 13:47

Most transmission occurs indoors with close contact (no mask) for over 15 minutes. But we also know that someone in a household can become ill and not spread it to the rest of the household.

Therefore, I personally think shops are low risk, everyone is wandering around, not staying in the same place.

I was also reassured by the program where they swabbed large parts of tube , so escalator handrails, seats etc and found no trace of the virus. I still wash my hands but I’m less worried about surface transmission now.

I think a restaurant/pub is medium risk. You just want to hope nobody in there has the virus as everyone is sat down indoors for quite a long time. All the sanitizer in the world won’t help airborne transmission indoors. I’ve still been eating out and going to pubs and restaurants. Haven’t caught it.

ElephantWhaleRabbit · 10/12/2020 13:49

I've been to the supermarket and other food shops at least twice a week since the start and haven't caught it. Also went to a few pubs and restaurants in the summer. Haven't caught it yet, as far as I know.

IndieRo · 10/12/2020 13:50

I'm always in and out if shops every day. I also went to the pub and cafe when they re opened and I didn't get Covid. My DH us a tradesman and worked all through covid in numerous homes, businesses and didn't get it.

IndieRo · 10/12/2020 13:51

Soory my DH worked all through lockdown.

IndieRo · 10/12/2020 13:52

My Aunt had it last December, diagnosed bacterial pneumonia but we know it was Covid. She lives in a very rural part of the country with her son and wouldn't go out much expect to work. She doesn't go to pubs, restaurants and gets her shopping delivered. Go figure.

AuntieMarys · 10/12/2020 13:53

I go to supermarket twice times a week plus independent butchers etc. We ate out 2-3 times a week, drank in bars, went to gym, salons, hairdressers.
Dh at work with a lot of people.
I wear a mask but do not use hand sanitiser. No washing down tins, doorknobs or quarantining post.
We haven't met up with people we shouldn't have and we don't travel on public transport.

Worldgonecrazy · 10/12/2020 13:56

Living life as normally as possible, shops etc. Public transport to work. No Covid. Antibody test earlier this year was negative so not had it asymptomatic either. Suspect I may be part of that percentage with natural immunity link as I managed to swerve the very nasty millennium flu and 2010 flu too.

Boredsilly · 10/12/2020 13:58

I've never caught it and go to the supermarket and other small shops a few times a week, and gym, school run etc I'm just careful as I can be stick to the rules and get on with a life as normal as it can be

Gretnacastle · 10/12/2020 13:58

In the UK? Yes, millions of people (although some will have “caught it” and just not noticed)

In the world? Yes, Billions of people (although some will have “caught it” and just not noticed)

RedSoloCup · 10/12/2020 14:00

Yes 🙌

I work in a pub and I go food and other shopping 3-4 times a week and have been since the restrictions eased.

A lot of other people (school mums etc) exactly the same as me.

I have been following the rules though.

IcedPurple · 10/12/2020 14:06

Supermarket workers have got it... sickness is at an all time high

Have you got a source for that?

Gretnacastle · 10/12/2020 14:08

Would also love to see a source for that (there won’t be one)

Especially if it details why people are off sick, and if the majority are perfectly fit to work but have been sent home with a cough or runny nose

Hardbackwriter · 10/12/2020 14:13

I've done almost as much as we've been allowed to within the law (went to the pub for lunch yesterday, lots of pub and cafe trips during the summer, toddler classes, saw family and friends indoors during the window it was allowed, was rigid about going to the shops only once a week during first lockdown but gone as often as normal since, been to museums and stately homes etc), am married to a teacher and have a DC in nursery - as far as I know none of us have had it. This is clearly down to luck, but I am a bit Hmm at the idea that going to the supermarket is so incredibly risky that it would be astonishing to go twice a week and not get it.

santasmincepie · 10/12/2020 14:15

I go into shops at least twice a week. I've also been in pubs and restaurants and to baby groups. My DP is frontline NHS. None of us have had it. It's not inevitable.

Matilda03 · 10/12/2020 14:16

Yes me! Even during lockdown I had to go to the local shops quite often as our car was out of action. Have also sat in lots of cafes as have a preschooler and no activities for her to do at the moment.
