Look at the image from www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m3223
I've circled where we fall in classrooms. It's time for face coverings in classrooms. I don't want to loose any colleagues or my own life.

@embolass

bluewavescrashing wear a mask?
We are not allowed to wear masks inside classrooms. Government guidance says no. I take you are either new here, goady or just like to have a go.
mumsneedwine · 06/12/2020 17:16

@embolass ok now you're a comedian. If you can build me some larger rooms that would be lovely.

Danglingmod · 06/12/2020 17:18

But even if the class of students never spoke when they weren't supposed to, chatted to each other or turned around - if they ONLY spoke when it was part of the learning, part of the lesson, it would still be a lot of talking. It's how most lessons work. Input. Question and answer. Writing. More question and answer. More writing.

There is a lot of speaking happening in every classroom and it massively contributes to transmission.

embolass · 06/12/2020 17:20

mumsneedwine never heard of the NHS donating to schools?? We are short of certain items so don’t understand why it would be “given away”
Look, I care passionately for all in and out of hospital. Want this over so we can all get back to some kind of normality, of which schools play a huge part.

ChloeDecker · 06/12/2020 17:24

never heard of the NHS donating to schools??

No but thankfully for you, schools donated to the NHS quite a lot since March.

embolass · 06/12/2020 17:24

Nicola Sturgeon has made the right decision to protect teachers by making the decision for all teachers and senior pupils to wear masks. If people continue to vote for a Tory government then what do you expect?
WEAR A MASK! Are you all sheep? If they don’t like it then let them send you all home! See how long that lasts

CallmeAngelina · 06/12/2020 17:24

@embolass

Plus remember you have 12 weeks holidays to escape from it all
Yeah, well if there was ever any doubt of a goady teacher-basher, this post dispels it. But for the record, most of that 12 weeks is unpaid. But don't let facts get in the way of your fun.
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 06/12/2020 17:25

Why do hospitals test children going into hospitals for non-covid reasons?
Why do hospitals ask children over the age of 3 to wear face coverings in hospitals?

I mean, what's the point?

Pomegranatespompom · 06/12/2020 17:25

@embolass you must be exhausted and stressed. Hope things improve for you soon.

Are maths @ the discretion of the school? All teachers wear them at the school DC attend. Probably luck (plus school have put in good procedures) but there have been no positive cases. It’s so diverse, sorry to hear some schools are struggling as much as they are.

CallmeAngelina · 06/12/2020 17:27

"assure you I will be lovely to my patient that and every other day on duty."

How about starting early and trying to be a decent person on here too.

noblegiraffe · 06/12/2020 17:32

mumsneedwine · 06/12/2020 17:32

How about supporting us by making sure we don't become your patients in the first place.

frazzledquaver · 06/12/2020 17:36

@converseandjeans

You won't get much sympathy on here. So long as people can send their kids into school they're not fussed. Teachers are considered to be moaning & need to just get on with it. If they mention that school is responsible for transmission of covid they're accused of wanting schools to close
That's not fair. There are plenty of parents who support and are concerned about teachers, as well as being concerned about families and the population in general.
Aragog · 06/12/2020 17:37

@embolass

and stay 2 m apart
How?

The classrooms aren't big enough to start with. In many of our classrooms the front desks have to be within those 2m in order to fit in.

I can't assess a child's work as they are working, to give immediate feedback from 2m away. I can't help them sort out a problem from 2m away. I can't help tie a child's shoelace from 2m away. I can't put a plaster in a children's scraped knee from 2m away.

Besides anything else social distancing isnt even expected or deemed necessary in an infant school.

And as said already, I am wearing a mask. However by doing so I'm breaking the government's DfE advice.

Until I caught Covid at school I was doing all this with no SDing or masks with 270 children age 4-7 every week, as per the DfE's guidelines. Since returning after being off so long this has been reduced to 90 children per week.

Pomegranatespompom · 06/12/2020 17:39

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot that’s not a national policy re testing/masks.

embolass · 06/12/2020 17:41

Supporting you? I’m telling you to take control and wear a mask!

motherrunner · 06/12/2020 17:42

I can only assume @embolass is at the end of their tether with stress otherwise I can’t imagine why another person with any ounce of humanity would wish unsafe working conditions on another and make critical digs about (unpaid) holidays that a teacher has no control over.

Aragog · 06/12/2020 17:43

never heard of the NHS donating to schools??

No, not really though actually the lovely doctors from the local children's hospital did come in and do a fantastic session with the children and did leave us some little card 3D mocks if mri scanners etc which were brilliant.

Mind you lots of schools have donated to the nhs at times and especially since Covid. Lots of secondary schools had their DT departments creating ppe to donate to local hospitals and care homes, we did a 'treats and snacks' collection for the local clinic and a local care homes too. We've been part of various other collections and local schemes too.

motherrunner · 06/12/2020 17:43

@embolass

mumsneedwine Supporting you? I’m telling you to take control and wear a mask!
Dfe mandates NO MASKS. If we go against this we would be going f against our contractual T and C.
Anon12345678910 · 06/12/2020 17:44

@embolass I have a feeling you're a troll rather than an educated medical practitioner of any sort. I make this assumption from the the laughable illogical comments you've thrown on here. We don't need to justify our grave concerns for the likes of ill educated trolls like yourself.

This is quite shocking to read, I had no idea it was so bad in some schools. We haven't had a single case in our primary and only one in secondary since September. It's only a matter of time though...

I don't know what can be done to make schools safer, though weekly testing may help reduce cases. All these fancy fast tests Boris was on about months ago would be really useful here, surely?

Aragog · 06/12/2020 17:46

WEAR A MASK!

I am wearing one.
It's going against government guidelines.
Luckily my headteacher supports me.
We haven't told the parents.
The children told seem to care though.
I remove it when teaching things like phonics at the board but wear it whenever I get close to them.

Unfortunately for me I caught Covid at school anyway.

Aragog · 06/12/2020 17:47

I'd be happy to be tested weekly.
I think in primary regular testing of staff would be really useful.

In secondary this should be for staff AND pupils.

EachDubh · 06/12/2020 17:54

**embolass

Plus remember you have 12 weeks holidays to escape from it all**

I have been teaching for over 10 years, as an nhs employee I would be entitled to 33 days annual leave (over 10 years employment) and 8 days public holidays. Total paid 41 days. Now I am in Scitland and think we may be paid more golidays than our collegues in England, but we we are paid for 40 days per year. So at the same time served period NHS workers are paid for at least 1 more day per year than Scottish teachers and more than English. Yes we have unpaid holiday time in Scotland of 4 weeks, 1 of these weeks is unpaid CPD (35h pro rata) so 3 weeks unpaid leave, a total of 14 days more annual leave than you and 1 day less paid leave than you.
Still feel like you are the hardest up? Lots of people are on legal minimum annual leave, minimum wage, pupil support assistants badly paid, do they not deserve some protection?
