It's best for children to be in school

I'm shocked that the consensus here appears to be that schools should close. I believe that it's best for children to be in school. Also that they should not be forced to wear masks or perform any social distancing as this is a damaging for their mental and social development. A thread for parents and teachers who share this view and have concerns about the threat of school closures and forced isolation of children who are not ill.

@CallmeAngelina

"Then no vulnerable children allowed in with Social Workers." What does this even mean? What have Social Workers got to do with it?

"Government should be stricter with.yje teachers who just stay home without justification."
Who is staying home "without justification?"

Such a stupid uninformed comment. I actually posted on another thread recently about teachers attendance - only 4 days sick absence a year in England, that is incredibly low for public sector occupations

The vociferous few who pile into threads starred by one poster never put it to a vote

tbf I have tried to put things to a vote but people moaned and got my threads moved from AIBU to Coronavirus...

Still, feel free to post your support for keeping schools open here:

@Aragog bad management by your school then as it is unusual to teach across the whole if primary
Also re: mask you know they don't really protect the wearer ? I understand you wearing one but I wear one to protect others I know they offer little to no protection to me
My dh has a job where he has to go into peoples houses he wears mask etc but the people he visits don't , supposed to maintain 2 m which he does but he said others always try to walk up to him and he is forever having to take a step back ( this is adults ) they see him in a mask and I think forgot he is not actually protected of they get too close

ChloeDecker · 01/12/2020 20:24

At my ds secondary the teachers stay 2 m away

Until a student unannounced walks right up to you without warning or you are walking alongside the students to get to your lessons or on break duty....

ChloeDecker · 01/12/2020 20:24

Also re: mask you know they don't really protect the wearer ?

Recent studies have said otherwise, with certain masks

CallmeAngelina · 01/12/2020 20:28

"At my ds secondary the teachers stay 2 m away"

Out if interest, how do you know that?

ChloeDecker · 01/12/2020 20:29

I have had a headache for 3 days, unusual tiredness, and an itchy welty rash behind one knee.
No cough or fever though... I wonder what the odds are?
It’s a possibility, sorry!

Thank you kitkat and noble!

cardibach · 01/12/2020 20:32

[quote timeforanewstart]@Barbie222 as i stated this was aimed at the poster who said they worked in a primary and were in contact with all 270 pupils not a secondary

Do they stay 2m away? Or does the school say they will do this ‘where possible’? This is the situation 8n most schools. In the majority of my classes it isn’t possible. The front row is less than 2m from the front of the room. I’m closer than 2m but still not counted as a bubble or allowed to self isolate if one of those front row students tests positive.

MrsHamlet · 01/12/2020 20:43

The back of my box is 2m from the front row. But I need to sit at my desk to use my visualiser which puts me about 60cm away from the student in the front row. 32 in the class means there's nowhere else for her to go.

Nellodee · 01/12/2020 20:49

I stay 2m away until my year 10s swear black is blue that the book cupboard at the back of the class is locked, in the hope that if they don't get their books out, they won't have to do any work.

timeforanewstart · 01/12/2020 21:23

@CallmeAngelina because my son says he knows what 2 m away is and I did say generally ,

timeforanewstart · 01/12/2020 21:24

@CallmeAngelina obviously the kids are not 2 m away from each other and my son has questioned why he needs to wear a mask walking to a classroom but not in the classroom
All schools will vary though in space they have , windows are open as well as luckily they can be

timeforanewstart · 01/12/2020 21:30

@ChloeDecker walking to a class don't you all have masks on ?
Re: protection of masks to wearer as you said possibly some but probably not the vast majority that people are wearing
Who even knows how often some wash their masks?

TheSunIsStillShining · 01/12/2020 21:36

Do people realize how little the 2m is of actual value? It is an airborne virus... so the asymptomatic kid in row 3 will infect others given they stay in the room for more than 15 minutes....
just sayin'

again, the conversation is about something that, even if possible, is of little value as a preventive measure.

ChloeDecker · 01/12/2020 21:37

I do but the amount of times you have to remind a pupil to put their’s on or that they go over both mouth and nose, would shock you. The fact that your son has personally questioned this to you means that this is also happening at his school in some form. And as a school we and a lot of others even offer masks to the pupils who need them or lose them for free.

As a parent, I’m not sure you would be wanting to walk down Secondary school corridors at the moment.

One of the ways in which we can help more children be in school is to have their the government/parents/carers provide proper masks and keep them regularly washed.
If parents want their child to have the best chance of staying in school at the moment, this would be a key part they can play in it.

Would agree with this.

Which is why SD is at huge cost for little benefit

WhyNotMe40 · 01/12/2020 22:05

I believe 2m has been shown to be of benefit as long as there is adequate ventilation. The 2m prevents transmission by large droplets, and the ventilation makes sure aerosol formation doesn't build up.

And we all know how big and openable the windows are in schools. Oh wait.... I've volunteered at 5 schools in the past 10 years. Believe me: even with ventilation/open windows at the end of the day they stink...
Aragog · 01/12/2020 22:45

Definitely not bad management and very normal in many schools to have a subject specialist who covers PPA across school. Been perfectly fine to do for the last 11 years; just not good in a pandemic.

Masks can benefit both wear and others around them. This has been shown many times in several studies. It helps to reduce viral load for the wearer which can make a big difference if you catch Covid.

I wear a new mask daily. All washed before rewearing. All are at least two to three layers and often with a filter.

My consultant recommended me wearing a mask for my own protection re viral load and the fact that later findings are that they do help to protect wearers as well.

The vociferous few who pile into threads starred by one poster never put it to a vote-just keep repeating the same mantra over and over

I just noticed this in Susan’s post.

Does anyone know what the mantra is supposed to be?

I’m the cult leader so I feel like I should know.

The only thing that springs to mind is “where the fuck is Gavin Williamson?”

CallmeAngelina · 02/12/2020 00:40

"Where the fuck is Gavin Williamson?"
Maybe away at scout camp?

It would be great if you could have put some of your questions to the vote, but they keep getting squirrelled away into the Corona Virus cupboard.

noblegiraffe · 02/12/2020 00:42

I put Gavin Williamson to a vote and it was about 90% in favour of him being a useless twat. I enjoyed that thread.

Oh, the irony from that poster. At least Noble has facts to back up her stance.

christinarossetti19 · 02/12/2020 08:10

Yes, the mantra of 'schools need to be safer' certainly brings the vociferous few to the yard.
