It's best for children to be in school

I'm shocked that the consensus here appears to be that schools should close. I believe that it's best for children to be in school. Also that they should not be forced to wear masks or perform any social distancing as this is a damaging for their mental and social development. A thread for parents and teachers who share this view and have concerns about the threat of school closures and forced isolation of children who are not ill.

middleager shocking and even more so that they are saying the problems are going to and from school Hmm

herecomesthsun · 01/12/2020 15:26

If you want kids to stay in school you should be campaigning with @noblegiraffe for them to be made safer so they can stay open.

middleager · 01/12/2020 15:29

I posted this on the other thread to show just how many children (29,000) or one in four were self isolating on the 20th of November in my city.

It is repeated isolations here as anybody will tell you. I expect our 5th one will come soon for DS2 such is the scale.

Piggywaspushed · 01/12/2020 15:29

Indeed starry, we can police their behaviours in school as far as possible an practicable but even Jenny Harries pointed out a long time ago that the journey to and from school, especially for secondary students, was fraught with issues.

christinarossetti19 · 01/12/2020 15:30

It's a bit ridiculous to say that the 'issues' are on the way to and from school.

The 'issue' is the virus. It doesn't stop at the school gates. If a child contracts it on the bus, they take it into school and home.

middleager · 01/12/2020 15:31

Oh, and as that's nearly a fortnight ago now, I await to see just how much the figure has increased since then.
Judging by the schools I work with, this will be a steep rise again.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 01/12/2020 15:41

"Yet some of the teachers here are happy to post link after link and also post links to petitions calling for schools to be closed"

Still waiting for evidence. But there isn't any because this statement is a lie among other lies.

Kitcat122 · 01/12/2020 15:53

I work in education. I worry at the moment about my children in school because there is multiple positives everyday. I don't want schools closed. I want safer schools. It amazes me how many people flame us for saying this. You would think that as a teacher and parent you would listen to my opinion but you don't.

Piggywaspushed · 01/12/2020 15:54

Couldn't think of another word christina : my point was schoolchildren have huge numbers of contacts.

Nicknacky · 01/12/2020 15:58

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer Apologies, I have no idea how to post links to other pages.

I assume you didn’t see the one posted in the petition section titled “ Petition to implement a 2 week school closure before Christmas” which was posted by a teacher on 29/11/2020?

So where was I lying? That’s just one post form a quick advanced search of “school petitions”

Piggywaspushed · 01/12/2020 16:06

I have just found that. It takes a lot of finding so it is hardly a high traffic area of MN. It also doesn't say close the schools completely. I also don't know how you know that poster is a teacher. (unless you ahve done extensive research to prove your point backwards, as it were). It is certainly not one I recognise as being constantly accused of shouting down others.

What I am struck by is how nasty, sneering and unpleasant many posters response are to someone who is just drawing attention , to a petition which people can a choose-or not-to sign.

Nicknacky · 01/12/2020 16:11

To be fair, that poster is support staff.

Piggywaspushed · 01/12/2020 16:13

How do you know that? There are literally three close schools type petitions amongst 50 or so on the first page of the petitions board.

I honestly think you need to try a bit harder to prove that particular point

I don't think you were lying. I think you just assumed.

Nicknacky · 01/12/2020 16:16

Advanced search shows that she is. Honestly, you can’t win on here. Don’t post a link and you get called a liar, post one and it still isn’t good enough😂.

There have been more petitions posted than that but the posts I specifically remember seeing where contained within threads. However I don’t have the time right now to school through dozens of 30+ pages of threads right now, I will do it when I have time if that is necessary.

Nicknacky · 01/12/2020 16:18

“Were” and “scroll”!!

Piggywaspushed · 01/12/2020 16:21

But you sounded so certain nicky and now you ahve had to trawl and then AS the poster who did not say 'I work in a school. I am workshy/I know best'.And does not make appearances on these threads.

I understand you are feeling some people are perhaps a bit overpowering in their posting styles and frequency. But saying these posters are all teachers who repeatedly post links to petitions is just inaccurate, on that particular point.

Piggywaspushed · 01/12/2020 16:22

It is really not necessary to scroll through threads. Links to petitions should be reported and removed-or moved if it's the OP- anyway.

Not posted by a teacher.

@Piggywaspushed

Couldn't think of another word christina : my point was schoolchildren have huge numbers of contacts.
I wasn't criticising you Piggywaspushed, but the attempts by the councillor in the article to say that the 'issues' weren't in schools.
herecomesthsun · 01/12/2020 16:28

Do we have a petition section on mumsnet? Where is it?

christinarossetti19 · 01/12/2020 16:30

Which petition are people talking about?

The one I found yesterday was by someone who was support staff at a university advocating to close schools in her capacity as a parent.

Could someone link?

herecomesthsun · 01/12/2020 16:30

Oh, and why should links to petitions be removed? (Again, it hadn't occurred to me that there would be a problem with this)

After all, we live in a democracy, isn't it a positive thing if people are exercising their right to indicate their support for a particular action to their elected Member of Parliament? Should we not be encouraging this as fellow citizens?

Nicknacky · 01/12/2020 16:32

I will leave you all to it. I’m not going to be repeatedly called a liar but posters on here so I wish you all well.

Nicknacky · 01/12/2020 16:32

By! I hate bloody typing on a tablet.
