Saving Christmas and just thinking for yourself

Does anyone else think that the concept of saving Christmas is flawed. Personally I'm disgusted at the idea that we could have a long lockdown to pay for super spreader Christmas.

I understand that Christmas is important to people, but it is just an annual event/religious festival. It will still go ahead but differently.

Does it really matter if the majority just spend it in their own homes? Unless there are particularly circumstances, I don't understand the over emotional reaction to Christmas, that people wouldn't feel anyway. I'm upset at not seeing my family, not just because it's Christmas.

We all know that there is a potentially nasty virus going round, meeting indoors at Christmas is ideal spreading situation.

Surely unless there are exceptional circumstances, for example a poster on another thread with a terminally ill relative, we can just have Christmas in our own homes.

If Christmas is to be saved, it shouldn't be at the cost of everything else come January.

I absolutely agree, OP. I'd completely come to terms with not having any sort of Christmas get together, and am feeling so confused.

I'm due to give birth to my first child any day now, and am waiting to see what on earth they're going to announce. Fully expect to be told that no-one can meet my new baby until the five days over Christmas, at which point everyone will want to dash to meet the baby or risk not seeing her until February or something. But I don't want to spend five days receiving visitors from all across the country! I'm so stressed about the whole thing!

You posted on the coronavirus board. At a 2 second glance there are at least 3 other threads near the top of the board that are all clearly about Christmas. Not much looking or keeping track required.

Right so you read the other, identical thread and saw the above scenario from another poster but yet you've "not been on MN for weeks"

Fwiw I think it’s a mistake to waste whatever progress has been made in this lockdown for Christmas. I think most people were preparing themselves for a different Christmas this year till the media and government latched on to this idea that we should all be focused on ‘saving Christmas’. It’s worse than the brexit propaganda in trying to convince a load of people that they desperately need something they hadn’t realised they wanted till they were told about it.

This lazy government have yet again being seduced by a message for easy popularity.

They will do it because people will not comply anyway.

I won’t be... just like thousands of others. I want to see my family at Xmas.

I think everyone will feel that their circumstances are exceptional.

The idea of a January lockdown is awful. It’s the most depressing time of the year anyway and to spend it largely at home would be a nightmare.

If it’s five days strict for every one rules relaxed, why couldn’t the Christmas relaxed period just be two or three days? People will break the rules anyway so i think it’s better to have some sort of compromise position they’re more likely to adhere to.

I can't begin to imagine how horrendous the motorways/main roads are likely to be.

I fancy having another couple of years with our parents alive, so we're going to stay at home and Skype.

We might scoop up a couple of friends for some country walks but we plan to have a "slow Christmas".

Some of those older relatives aren’t likely to last to next Christmas. In my family, they’re the ones pushing to meet up.

vulnerable age group is 50+.....I would hope under normal circumstances many still WOULD be around next christmas!!

I have been on this morning. I read the tail end of a thread which I couldn't even tell you which one it was, but someone mentioned a terminally ill relative.

I posted about Christmas because I saw headlines about a lockdown after Christmas.

You know I’m talking about much older people. Stop being disingenuous.

I can't see how it makes any difference whether they ease up on the rules over Christmas or keep them in place. People are going to do what they want either way.

I will be grieving the loss of 2 parents in the space of 7 months by Christmas...I have no intention of being on my own then, and will spend it with my sister and her family from 3 different households. I know I'll get flamed for that but our family were forced to grieve alone once already to expect us to do it again is too much.
