Saving Christmas and just thinking for yourself

Does anyone else think that the concept of saving Christmas is flawed. Personally I'm disgusted at the idea that we could have a long lockdown to pay for super spreader Christmas.

I understand that Christmas is important to people, but it is just an annual event/religious festival. It will still go ahead but differently.

Does it really matter if the majority just spend it in their own homes? Unless there are particularly circumstances, I don't understand the over emotional reaction to Christmas, that people wouldn't feel anyway. I'm upset at not seeing my family, not just because it's Christmas.

We all know that there is a potentially nasty virus going round, meeting indoors at Christmas is ideal spreading situation.

Surely unless there are exceptional circumstances, for example a poster on another thread with a terminally ill relative, we can just have Christmas in our own homes.

If Christmas is to be saved, it shouldn't be at the cost of everything else come January.

@PurpleDaisies

vulnerable age group is 50+.....I would hope under normal circumstances many still WOULD be around next christmas!!

You know I’m talking about much older people. Stop being disingenuous. Hmm

why are you trying to tell me to stop being anything? As if i'm going to!

i have no idea about the age of 'much' older people you are talking about....you didnt say...do i guess? 50's? 60's? 70's? who knows?

Maybe there should be a new section called Coronavirus Christmas where all these threads can fuck off together and argue about Christmas lockdown

Maybe they could post on the Christmas board instead....

If your happy to have xmas home alone and those that are can
For those that maybe want to spend with family or relatives who may not be here next year., or for mh reasons or other reasons , why not let them get on with it if its allowed. Just a few weeks ago we were allowed to meet 6 people indoors also a risk , not many were asking for it to stop
And for those saying about divali and eid , they are not national holidays in the uk , religious festivals yes ,just like easter which was also in lockdown, eid was lockdown in some areas but not all.
The religious side of xmas will prob have more restrictions than normal.
Nothing is guaranteed yet but they are looking at options , but judging by another thread i have been on where kids are isolating from school and the amount of parents going out with kids , be suprised if numbers go down much , what with all the shops then opening and people having less time to get xmas presents etc , can see these being rammed

From your response, I’m questioning whether you actually know what “disingenuous” means @WoodYewBee. Hmm

The NHS says your age makes you vulnerable over the age of 70. That’s basically what people mean when they’re talking about older adults. Not 50+.

Personally I want to see my elderly parents over christmas. I will be making sure I am safe to see them by self isolating prior to visiting and paying for a test. I am personally happy to be locked down in january to be able to do so.

In my opinion we will be locked down in January - February perhaps even longer regardless of what happens at christmas. January / February is peak flu season and likely to be peak time for covid. We'll be living with some sort of lockdown on and off until next spring so get used to it.

The same people who are raging against christmas are probably the same ones who totally deny that its spreading though schools and back into the community and would throw a fit if schools were closed.

Some rude people at the start of this thread op ignore them! I agree, I honestly don't get people's selfish attitudes. I honestly think there should be no mixing house holds for xmas, unless you live alone in which case bubble up with one house hold. It doesn't mean Xmas is cancelled, just that it's different this year! It's what you make it! I think it's undoing this month long lock down and putting us straight back into one at the end of it. We all want to see family or friends, goes without saying but I think the five day window is ridiculous... But just my opinion.

What % of people do we think agree with just staying home with no mixing this year?

Most people I know think it's ridiculous to go driving round the country spreading the virus, so it's got to help slow the spread considerably if those of us who realise it's the only way to break the chain, just stay home for one Christmas. Im' going to stick my neck out and say it's over 50%.

@Royalgiraffe

Oh thank goodness someone started a thread about how Christmas needs to be cancelled, there definitely havent been any others.

Yep, 'cancelling Christmas' threads have replaced all the repetitive schools threads that clogged up this page a few months ago.

@NearlyChristmasalloveragain

I didn't see any other threads but then I wasn't looking. I haven't been on mumsnet much for weeks so I'm not keeping track of threads.

But hey ho, you could just not bother reading it. No one is forcing you, are they?

Does it make you feel really good about yourself to post a sarcastic reply?

Does it make you feel good by starting a sanctimonious post about how we should all just accept the misery and COVID narrative that this sodding lockdown is the only way to stop mass death?

I would really like to see my dad over Christmas. I have only seen him once this year.

However...

I have had Coronavirus and it was HELL. My DC and DH had it to a lesser extent. One of our GP's died of Covid early on in Lockdown 1.

Clearly those of you who want 20 people round your table on Christmas Day have not had a nasty dose of Covid or lost someone you love to it. If you did you would see how very unimportant having a turkey roast with your relatives is compared to losing one of you to it, or even just sitting there in terror as your child catches it and you freak out over it.

Of course, if you have a very sick relative you should of course see them over Christmas. However, I really do not get the rest of the population who think the world is going to end if they don't have pigs in blankets with their extended family on Christmas Day.
