Month long lockdown to 'pay' for 5 days over Christmas

NotAKaren · 18/11/2020 18:03

PHE have confirmed Sage advice that for every one day of relaxation over Christmas would require 5 days of restrictions afterwards. So for 5 days relaxation, which is rumoured to be what the government have in mind, would mean 25 days of restrictions. Is it really worth it?

I also think that if we're going to have to lock down tightly in January come what may, those that otherwise might have just taken it steady will think fuck it, and drink all the drink and see everybody then can think of, which will make January horiffic.

DumpedByText · 18/11/2020 22:18

It's one day and a posh roast dinner! We have to accept this year will be different and hope that next year will be normal.

I intend to stay at home with DD in my pj's and eat chocolate and ditch the dinner for food we love!

AcornAutumn · 18/11/2020 22:19

Vicious “ In all honesty, I have no idea. It just seems like the humane thing to do. If I was in that situation myself, with a loved one at EOL, there's every chance I'd be a complete hypocrite after what I've just posted and go and be with them. I suppose that the best we can hope for is that if we are locked down for Christmas then the police use their discretion if reports are made.”

You have no idea but you thought it was an idea? Are you in government?

My mum is 82 with heart problems. Who decides if this might be her last Christmas or does she not count because she’s not end of life?

My best friend’s dad has cancer, he’s 75. Want to guarantee this next round of chemo will do any good?

If you went for end of life, you’d be making a very arbitrary choice about who gets Christmas.

All this for a virus as deadly as flu. Flu is deadly all right. Want to have winter lockdown forever? Many posters going the right way about it.

NannyGythaOgg · 18/11/2020 22:20

Government by threats - yeah - that'll work well.

Since when have Sage's figures been right about anything.

Surely - treat me like an adult and I will behave like one and ensure I take the upmost care with hygiene and distancing etc. Treat me like a toddler and I'm likely to do what the hell I want.

People are going to do what they want at Christmas. Those that would be careful will follow rules - and it will make little difference. Those that don't give a fuck, or don't believe, will do exactly what they want regardless of the rules.

User158340 · 18/11/2020 22:20

@ChloeCrocodile

People (generally) will not comply with tight restrictions at Christmas. So there will be a January lockdown anyway. With the vaccines looking promising, that will hopefully be the last one.
It might not just be January though. Cases that start spreading late December and then at the start of the school and university term early January will likely peak in February-March.
AcornAutumn · 18/11/2020 22:21

My dad was a hospital doctor, February was called morgue month at his hospital and probably many others.

PinkFondantFancy · 18/11/2020 22:23

Absolutely not. The government sounds more and more abusive each day. "I'll give you your freedom (sort of) but you'll have to pay five times over". F that.

AcornAutumn · 18/11/2020 22:26

I’m quite sure the hand of Cummings is still at play here, along with all the social experiments and chaos theory he likes to test on lab rats.

TheDogsMother · 18/11/2020 22:28

This is awful. A month to pay for five days ?? I know it's tough but can we just try and accept a quieter Christmas this year ? If we didn't need so much lockdown to pay for the five days at least we might be able to continue with small amounts of contact with family and friends.

User158340 · 18/11/2020 22:31

And deaths didn't even peak until April and that was despite shutting down in March.

The first quarter of 2021 will be a nightmare if people take the piss over the Christmas period, including new year. We'll be back to where we started.

It's okay people self isolating for a week or two before meeting up with a few family members on Christmas Day, but it's everything beyond that. Relying on common sense in this country doesn't work. Not in a health pandemic anyway.

Hopefully the vaccine will be rolled out in the first quarter of next year but it'll be too late for tens of more thousands who'll be hospitalised.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 22:31

Its been nine months. The gasllighting really needs to stop.

friendlycat · 18/11/2020 22:32

I’m more concerned about businesses small, medium and large. Schools and teachers. Small shops and all retail. All those hard working independent people trying to earn a living. The whole of the hospitality sector. Just about everybody trying to earn a living.

Christmas is not worth making all of the above suffer any more than they are already.

I fully realise there are elderly, fragile and vulnerable people and this is obviously an important concern, but there are many who realistically could cope with a minimal Christmas without a need for group interaction. It would all be over in a matter of days and at what human and economic cost so that people can have a “social” festive period with friends and family.

It’s a no from me.

DominaShantotto · 18/11/2020 22:32

I'm done. I'm not going around licking lampposts and planning orgies - but I'm not going to see my mum deteriorate more than she already is and do so in isolation (and facetime is not a substitute indefinitely).

We're going to do Christmas - will be as safe as we can make it and the kids have very much had everything never re-opened after the first lockdown so literally do school and home - mum's adamant she wants to see us all and has weighed up the risks and, to be honest, I'm so bloody concerned about her mobility and mental health I place those risks much higher.

Anyone in the house has been tested any time they've shown anything that remotely passes for a covid symptom, and we don't have a wide social network anyway - and now I'm done doing anything more than that.

If they wouldn't sacrifice a foreign holiday in the middle of a pandemic for one summer, then they won't sacrifice their normal Christmas.

When I say they I include the government in that. Part of why they encouraged holidays was so they could go away. It'll be the same with Christmas, given that it's recess.

Londonmummy66 · 18/11/2020 22:33

We also get people squealing that the schools need to close - let's just cancel Christmas - its one day of the year FFS.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 22:33

So when can we expect the announcement from Offcom

AcornAutumn · 18/11/2020 22:33

User158340

Ithink you’ve misunderstood maybe? February was normally called morgue month. I don’t mean this year.

No one demanded shut down for flu of 2018 or 1999-2000.

Toobuktim · 18/11/2020 22:34

Wouldn’t surprise me tbh, guessed as much when they extended furlough till March.
But I’m also thinking they’re going to roll out the quick result tests in the high areas to help people decide if it’s a risk or not to meet up

OytheBumbler · 18/11/2020 22:34

It's not just about Christmas though.
Switzerland have reported today their intensive care beds are full. They have no more room. For anything!

We need to get the rate down. Then we can open businesses and get back to normal. It is kicking the can down the road but with vaccines and a sensible plan we can get back to normal.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 22:35

Last time i went abroad was 1986 School trip to Switzerland

User158340 · 18/11/2020 22:35

Don't even know anyone who isn't going to see their family anyway so pointless

For five days though? There's a big difference between one day and five days.

Sorry, I read it wrong.

February is a bad month anyway, yes. Throw another wave of Covid into the mix, it doesn't make it any better.

ViciousJackdaw · 18/11/2020 22:42

You have no idea but you thought it was an idea? Are you in government?

Oh come off it @AcornAutumn, have you never had an idea but with no clear indication of how to execute it? Have you never thought out loud? Sounds like you're just after a bun fight.

Legoandloldolls · 18/11/2020 22:44

I cant see them.relaxing the rules that much after the 2nd. Its not going to go back to meeting more than 6 indoors. We are a family of 6 so I dont expect to be able to have anyone around unless I leave my young teens in a shed or something.

Maybe three days with a finate number of households would be a compromise? I have no say so I wont loose sleep either way. I want to see my sister, mum and closest friends but it's not going to be allowed so no point getting invested either way.

I'm forced into being inert in my life choices and getting more conditioned to low expectations after all this time. It's been shit, it's still shit with more shit to come. So any more is a bonus. I miss my old life
