Month long lockdown to 'pay' for 5 days over Christmas

PHE have confirmed Sage advice that for every one day of relaxation over Christmas would require 5 days of restrictions afterwards. So for 5 days relaxation, which is rumoured to be what the government have in mind, would mean 25 days of restrictions. Is it really worth it?

Absolutely not. I'd far rather have some ongoing semblance of normal life in something approaching the old tier 2 rather than the economy getting slammed for a month just for Christmas get togethers.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/11/2020 18:31

Nope, not worth it and under the current restrictions I would be spending Christmas day alone so it would affect me. I'd rather spend the day by myself and have freedom afterwards.

bathsh3ba · 18/11/2020 18:33

They were saying two days for every day of relaxation earlier today. Do they just make up the figures?!

IHateCoronavirus · 18/11/2020 18:34

Bloody hell the governments stupidity is the gift that keeps giving at the moment.

MarshaBradyo · 18/11/2020 18:34

No

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 18/11/2020 18:34

For me personally yes.

I understand why other people would say no.

KitKatastrophe · 18/11/2020 18:36

For us personally, yes I would take this. we have a 4 year old so it's the first Christmas she has been excited about and I would love for it to be a family affair

However for the economy and most people, its probably not worth it.

Also it depends how strict the following lockdown is. Would schools be open? Any shops? Would we be allowed to meet anyone, even outside? If not, maybe not worth it.

Danglingmod · 18/11/2020 18:36

Definitely not.

I thought they said 2 days as well in the briefing this morning
stovetopespresso · 18/11/2020 18:36

The 5 day unlock wont be the (sole) cause of the stricter lockdown in Jan. They're managing us psychologically. It is tricky. What are other countries doing I wonder?

starfish4 · 18/11/2020 18:40

It's not just jobs, does anyone really want to spend five days seeing all their families and friends and Covid spreading. I really couldn't live with myself if I passed it onto someone I genuinely care about.

Five days doesn’t go to New Year’s Eve where many will break the rules so it could be even longer than 25 days.

Not worth it at all, health or economy wise. I hope the 25 days are real restrictions so no schools etc otherwise so many will get ill who didn’t mix and wanted to stay safe.

Derelictwreck · 18/11/2020 18:44

But hang on. It's 25 days in addition to what?

It's not either end on 23rd and free forever or end on 23rd, have 5 days and then go back in for 25 days.

TicTacTwo · 18/11/2020 18:47

A free for all is going to affect schools in January too. With exam year kids I don't want this happening!

The only change that I think should happen is non-essential retail opening on 2nd December

TicTacTwo · 18/11/2020 18:49

And hospitality opening sometime in December (maybe a No-alcohol clause?)

Danglingmod · 18/11/2020 18:50

Non-essential shops and seated hospitality... Fair enough.

Mixing of households and unsafe opening of pubs - no way. Not if you want schools to stay open.

Seems so.

The only certainty is that whatever restrictions are put in place SAGE will always moan and say it’s not enough.

Clutterbugsmum · 18/11/2020 18:53

SAGE and the scientists are saying for every day over Christmas we have to see family and friends we would have to go into a lockdown for 5 days to counter each day.

So if the Government say we can visit family and friends from 24th to 28th December (5 Days) we would have to go into lockdown for 25 days to stop Covid spreading again.

This. Reminds me more and more of the Blackadder puritans who think we should all sit on a spike...

Augustbreeze · 18/11/2020 18:55

Apparently the female NHS head of something "misspoke" this morning when she said two days for every five.....

Dontrainonmyparade · 18/11/2020 18:55

CarryOnWalking · 18/11/2020 18:57

Not worth it.

Makes me really cross!

Stellaris22 · 18/11/2020 18:59

No, not worth it.

And people complained (rightly) about loss of income and effect on the economy.l during the first lockdown.

But how many of these people will now be making plans to dangerously mix over Christmas?

For those who are healthy and with no reason to mix, it's selfish and stupid. I am so fed up of it not sinking in, but it won't to some people who 'do my own risk assessment'.
