Has Covid-19 made you realise just how inherently selfish so many people are?

It has me.
The world is a mess and most people only really care about themselves and their families.
Fed up to the back teeth of people trying to justify why they can't possibly do X, Y, and or Z.
Just be honest and say "Because I don't really care about passing this virus on, I'm not bothered about those more vulnerable than myself."

Yes Ive noticed people using vulnerable people to emotionally blackmail others while not giving a fuck about them the rest of the time.

MashedSweetSpud · 12/11/2020 01:26

Yes.

justhetwoofus · 12/11/2020 01:34

I have a severely disabled son and a very elderly mum,and the way most people are treating this 2nd lockdown is appalling .....
I have to admit though....had I been young, I don’t know how I would have behaved!

Blueberries0112 · 12/11/2020 01:37

As a deaf person, I already knew.

SunshineOutdoors · 12/11/2020 01:37

I do think it’s more ‘natural human behaviour that is difficult to override’ than ‘inherently selfish’.

SunshineOutdoors · 12/11/2020 01:39

Although perhaps they’re the same thing? I do understand your frustration though.

Oh yes. The selfishness of the human race is not news for those of us with disabilities.

Me too.

During lockdown there has been an increase in domestic violence and as many babies have died from that as under 18s of covid. I'm surprised that on a site like mumsnet people aren't more upset about that. (www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/education-54827702)

To be honest covid kills and lockdown kills I don't think it's selfish to try and save lives either way but to completely disregard one is too polarized.

MoleSmokes · 12/11/2020 03:04

starfish88 I completely agree.

Oblomov20 · 12/11/2020 03:20

I always knew this.

starfish88 · 12/11/2020 03:53

@MoleSmokes

starfish88 I completely agree.
The only thing I can think of is it's the whole 'but DV isn't contagious' aurgument which is just a nice way of saying 'it doesn't effect my DC' which is the height of selfishness really.
MoleSmokes · 12/11/2020 04:05

Crikey! I’ve never come across anyone who claims it isn’t actually contagious - or “infectious” I suppose they mean. Do they just think it’s a massive coincidence or something??? Blimey!

SnuggyBuggy · 12/11/2020 04:11

I think it's more our worlds have shrunk to our immediate friends and family. Before lockdown I used to have a wide range of different people I interacted with and now I don't. In addition many peoples stress levels have shot up and put them in survival mode which can give a much more self focused mindset.

I think they basically mean that thier DC won't suffer from abuse because they wouldn't do something like that (and stuff all the kids whose parents are abusing them) but they can't control the people who jog past at a distance of slightly less than 2m, the mask exempt and supermarket produce touchers.
LolalovesLondon · 12/11/2020 04:18

I always knew this.
Me too.

fallfallfall · 12/11/2020 04:22

It’s highlighted how ineffective and useless the government is.
The whole pr of this viral surge has been a massive fuck up one after another.

lovelemoncurd · 12/11/2020 04:23

No I must live amongst nice people as our neighbourhood has been amazing these last few months. Checking on vulnerable neighbours, organising remote Easter and Halloween events, trading free food etc.

MoleSmokes · 12/11/2020 04:26

I think I get what you mean, Starfish.

That’s interesting SnuggyBuggy. I’m sure you’re right. I wonder how long that will persist or if we’ll just snapback to Normal Mode - or morph into a different way of being?

This is such a big thing the younger you are. For everyone up to mid-20’s this is such a different way of life and experience than the rest of us when we were that age.

I overheard two young women, one late-teens the other early twenties, talking about how Covid was “their generation” and they would all be different from other generations. I think the younger one said she was 18 and the older one 23 - it was a couple of weeks ago and I’ve a brain like a sieve!

The younger one was all excited about it but the older one didn’t comment.

PerveenMistry · 12/11/2020 04:29

Yes. Selfish and stupid.

amusedtodeath1 · 12/11/2020 04:33

I guess I always knew it, but yes it really has brought home to me how many people really are in it for themselves, but it's also made me realise just how extreme some people are.

This whole "if you support restrictions you don't care about, MH/DV/Abuse and on the other hand if you care about MH/DV/Abuse you automatically don't care about CV? It's totally possible to care about both and do the right thing.

Aimed at me? Because I think you will find I said "To be honest covid kills and lockdown kills I don't think it's selfish to try and save lives either way but to completely disregard one is too polarized."
Plantlife · 12/11/2020 04:57

I'm a DV victim in a refuge. I wouldn't have left if there hadn't been lockdowns. It made travelling a bit safer. The DV doesn't protect us from the virus. I'd rather be killed quickly than die from coronavirus.

I'm glad you're safe from the abuse now.

Also just out of interest what is 'the right thing'? What the government tells us? So work from home unless you can't but if you can't then go to work? Or eat out to help out until we blame you for spreading the virus? I would love to feel I was doing the right thing but I have no idea what the right thing is.
