To be annoyed that school requests parents wear a mask.

School have requested parents a mask on drop offs and pick ups. I’m not anti mask and I will wear one but I’m annoyed.

It’s a rural school. With less than 100 children. Majority of children aged year 4 and up walk to school on their own or at very least walk into the school grounds on their own. I barely see anyone dropping Ds (10) off. Maybe 1 other parent from a distance. Don’t come into close contact with teachers as it’s all done outside anyway.

They also have staggered times. So people going in and out different times and one way system.

With Dd who’s younger I see the parents of the children in her bubble but we all social distance.

Barely come into contact with anyone.

School are saying it’s because parents often talk but what do they do expect us to not talk to each other? What’s the issue with people talking whilst social distancing?! I’d understand if parents were standing in groups but it’s not like that here. Most parents are rushing off to work and too busy to talk. Others drop their kids and walk off quick like me 🤣

But being made to wear masks in a huge outdoor open space with plenty of room to distance? Really necessary? Lots of open space around the school! I just don’t really understand!

I don’t come into close contact with anyone during the school run!

It's the same at our rural

NightRiders · 06/11/2020 16:15

Simply de register your child and home school them. Problem solved.

Similar set up at our school.
I was initially a bit miffed too but then I gave myself a shake.
Not everyone is as lucky to be in that situation. Schools in cities are busier, have smaller playgrounds and parents have to take older children due to being near main roads etc.
So it isn't one size fits all but they are doing their best so I'll do as I'm told. It's literally 5 mins out of my day.

Noitjustwontdo · 06/11/2020 16:19

@TrustTheGeneGenie

i do wonder whether if the school told you you had to walk backwards into the gates and spin 3 times because it warned covid off whether all these posters would be saying just do the fucking spins and don't be selfish.

I reckon they would, tbh.

Except the school are asking them to wear a mask because the scientists and government advise them worldwide so not entirely sure what your point is.
Ferrero12345 · 06/11/2020 16:20

Just wear the mask like you’ve been asked and stop being difficult. If this is the worst thing you have to moan about at the moment then why not count your blessings instead of having a pointless winge. YABU.

Fluffybutter · 06/11/2020 16:20

Ours has requested the same so I do it .
Really not a big deal

Mischance · 06/11/2020 16:21

Well I'm annoyed that people like you don't just get on with it and stop being annoyed. FGS we are in the middle of a pandemic - it is little enough to ask. Get a grip.

monkeytennis97 · 06/11/2020 16:21

Yeah these bloody schools trying to keep everyone safeHmm

byvirtue · 06/11/2020 16:24

Covid hysteria seems to have ramped up since lockdown was announced.

You have my sympathies op we are a rural tiny school with zero covid cases. I’m the only parent collecting at lunchtime I won’t be wearing a mask.

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/11/2020 16:25

First world problems OP.

They have to ask everyone but it's actually directed at the cluster of chatterboxes.

Just do it and make life easier.

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 16:25

Same opinion here. Wear the mask and keep going with your day.
Other countries had mask wearing rules everywhere from day 1.
There are reports saying that the virus is airborne is some cases, contrary to what it was thought previously by WHO, and the cases are on the rise, so higher risk. Just comply and move on.

Mischance · 06/11/2020 16:29

I won’t be wearing a mask. - well how very clever! What an impressive specimen you are!

What exactly will this achieve, other than "Look at me - aren't I the independent one!"?

This is ridiculous.

Bollss · 06/11/2020 16:30

how exactly do masks outdoors when you are nowhere near anyone else help?

do governments advise them in that situation? i dont believe the uk government does, does it?

MrsSpringfield · 06/11/2020 16:33

Yes yabu. It's not a difficult thing to do.

Likeafriendivealwaysknown · 06/11/2020 16:34

@j101112 honestly grow up. I’ve been asked to wear a mask when dropping my dog off at doggy daycare! There’s never anyone there and clearly dogs can’t spread covid but I still do it without whining and moaning and giving out because it’s easy to do, I wear it for around 5 minutes and it obviously makes the people working there feel safer.

AlwaysLatte · 06/11/2020 16:34

Don't be a dick, just wear one.

My kids are absolutely happy to put a mask on where necessary, even the 10 year old puts it on when we say he actually doesn't have to if he doesn't want to. If children can do it without question I'm sure all the whingeing adults on here can.

Lily83 · 06/11/2020 16:35

Schools have to ask everyone
They can't target particular parents who may be chatting at the school gates.

Schools are really struggling to stay open..

Teachers working in freezing classrooms - children working in very restrictive settings

A parent could be commuting or working in a high risk setting

Low risk areas can quickly turn in small clusters - look at the country areas where there are workers have caught it working in meat factories etc and then spread it to the local areas

BingPot99 · 06/11/2020 16:38

I wear one when dropping off DS and have since September when the school requested it. The risks of transmission outside may be low, especially with social distancing etc but the school has asked so why wouldn't I inconvenience myself slightly for a few minutes if it makes the teachers feel a bit safer /happier going to work. It also makes a point to DS about following certain rules to show respect for other people even when you don't think it is really 'necessary' to do so.

Timeforsinging81 · 06/11/2020 16:38

I'd welcome our primary school asking parents to wear masks. We're already meant to line up and socially distance at pick up for reception class and most people are ok at doing it but I keep having to back out of line when people edge closer to talk to me. I like to chat but as a hospital worker I'm conscious that I need to keep me distance to protect others

timothytoeseatenbyaghoul · 06/11/2020 16:42

I don't get the whole wearing a mask outdoors tbh it's so stupid. There's signs all over the train station here to wear one while standing on the platform in open air and it's in a very small market town so not busy at all. I could be the only one there but yet still got to wear one 🤷🏻‍♀️ daft.

VividImagination · 06/11/2020 16:42

My husband is vulnerable. We have a school aged child. Said child is “technically” exempt from wearing a mask but he does, all day in school and going in and coming out. His choice. He wants to protect his dad from Covid as far as he can. It’s a few minutes, twice a day. Just do it.

freddosfrogs · 06/11/2020 16:42

So does your child just magically appear in the playground or do you have to speak to the school staff to say that you are there to collect your child?

YABU.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/11/2020 16:44

I don't cope with wearing the fucking things so I won't*. With staggered times, that's 20 minutes on an exposed windswept playground per day with plenty of space to distance. Outdoors and distancing are hugely more effective virus control measures than fishing out what is basically the used handkerchief that you shoved in your pocket at the end of the previous school run.

I also don't cope with losing 2/3s of peoples' facial expressions and the mumbling, so rather than trying to decipher through all that distortion, I end up zoning out and looking at my feet. The more and more that fucking mask are invading society, the worse it gets.

Masks are close to useless in this context (particularly that any spread will happen in the classroom not chatting al fresco), they are socially isolating, divisive, and affect people's proprioception risking trips and falls. They cause more harm than good, and it's just a useless gesture to make it look like something is happening.

*I wear a visor indoors, but that just mists up in cold conditions so is hazardous to wear in this context.

friendlycat · 06/11/2020 16:44

Stop arguing against it. Schools have much bigger things to worry about. Just do as you are asked.
