To be annoyed that school requests parents wear a mask.

School have requested parents a mask on drop offs and pick ups. I’m not anti mask and I will wear one but I’m annoyed.

It’s a rural school. With less than 100 children. Majority of children aged year 4 and up walk to school on their own or at very least walk into the school grounds on their own. I barely see anyone dropping Ds (10) off. Maybe 1 other parent from a distance. Don’t come into close contact with teachers as it’s all done outside anyway.

They also have staggered times. So people going in and out different times and one way system.

With Dd who’s younger I see the parents of the children in her bubble but we all social distance.

Barely come into contact with anyone.

School are saying it’s because parents often talk but what do they do expect us to not talk to each other? What’s the issue with people talking whilst social distancing?! I’d understand if parents were standing in groups but it’s not like that here. Most parents are rushing off to work and too busy to talk. Others drop their kids and walk off quick like me 🤣

But being made to wear masks in a huge outdoor open space with plenty of room to distance? Really necessary? Lots of open space around the school! I just don’t really understand!

I don’t come into close contact with anyone during the school run!

@j101112 I agree it's really pointless.

Schools have to comp!y with government guidelines and
I think adults should wear the masks so the DC see them complying. It's about setting an example and even if it seems ridiculous to you as an individual, surely you can understand the bigger picture?

The probelm is you are talking about what you do...

They are trying to balance it out.. There might not be a case locally, some parents will not be working locally, lots of ways it makes its way in, parents are chatting so yes it makes sense to wear a mask..

My DS is exempt but wears one in corridors at school. I don't think he requires the exemption., he wears them in shops..The exemption card is a pointless argument..if you can wear them you don't need to be exempt and actually probably safer for you that you do. Your complaint is about wearing them for no reason.. The LA thinks it may well be useful probably worth seeing if it helps.

You'd think people in areas with low cases would want to keep it that way.

I live right next to the school and the gate nearest is usually just myself and two childminders, it's a wide path so we're far apart and it's probably unnecessary but it's what we've been told to do. The other gates are like sardines though and there's not been a mask in sight until the school finally sent out an email this morning.

Parents at the school where I work have been wearing masks since September with no issue.

@Bytheloch

The narrative that if you don’t wear a mask you’re selfish, is also boring now. Also the assumption that you don’t wear one at other times when inside, or when approaching a teacher.

This is about being outside in the fresh air and instead using common sense to keep a distance. Just wondering how many of you will still be complying when your primary age children are being made to wear them outside in the fresh air at lunch/break?

Ah, good old common sense! Which has definitely stopped the virus spreading so far!

Our school has asked parents to wear masks. We're a similar demographic. It's to try to keep schools safer for staff as much as anything. You know, the people who are looking after and educating the children with no ppe. It's not all about you. Thankfully.

What @ZoeTurtle said.

The whole of Scotland has to wear a mask at school pick up.

At our primary a lot of grandparents do pick ups, they are allowed to in Wales as informal carers so wearing a mask for them is not a bad idea imo.

How do you know there are no cases? Unless the school are testing everyone and reporting daily you won’t know. A teacher posted the other day they have been advised to tell no one about staff test results.

It’s a few minutes and may keep others safe so why would anyone not do it?

To be fair, I sympathise to an extent and felt quite put out when we were asked to wear masks. Unfortunately, human nature is to be sociable and parents will stand chatting and it's quite natural that over time they get closer and closer.

I think in a couple of days time you'll accept it and it won't be a big deal. I think we're all struggling with different things at the moment and it's funny how something as simple as this can provoke such a strong reaction.

Just put your mask on! There are few cases in your area, excellent! Keep it that way.

It's a precaution. Better than them not bothering.

We are in Scotland and the school asked us. I think it’s come from the Scottish government not from the school

@BigPlanes

What *@ZoeTurtle* said.

The whole of Scotland has to wear a mask at school pick up.

Just to correct this, Swinney mentioned it as advisory in his announcement last week. It didn’t even go through Scot Parl for approval. He said it in context of school drop and collection and has no authority to introduce such guidance to the areas off school premises. So, given that the majority of folk are not even allowed to enter the playgrounds for drop off, it absolutely doesn’t apply to the whole of Scotland.

It's not all about you and what you do. There are some fuckers who won't keep their distance while talking so they have to do this to try and keep it as safe as possible. It's really not rocket science.

It will be a rule across the country.
They can't exclude certain schools it is a positive change takes less than 5 minutes a day it's a small ask.
Lots of parents stand around chatting at large schools.

No yanbu but you will be told on Mumsnet you are because this is Bonkers Central when it comes to covid.

Masks are worse than useless in most places and will do sod all in the circumstances you 're describing.

It’s probably a case of having to make rules because a minority aren’t doing social distancing. You clearly can’t claim that all parents are adhering to social distancing unless you stand there for the entire school run observing. I live near a school, and a lot of parents congregate in small groups, not social distancing. Just wear it - it’s not worth getting agitated over.

Jesus fucking Christ. The threads on here are ridiculous.

Keep the schools open at all costs... But....

We don't think teachers should wear masks!

Children shouldn't be made to wear masks!

Parents don't want to wear masks!

Schools shouldn't have all the windows open!

Wishforanishwishdiash · 06/11/2020 15:57

I don't mind the mask. I do mind that I need to collect my daughter 15 minutes earlier than normal so they can "stagger" pick up. This amounts to a missed day of learning every half term, and there is no after school care this year, you can't share with other parents, and it just gets a bit harder every day.
