Any sign of a lockdown round your way? Cos there isn’t one here.

I’m in England. This morning the school run was the usual massive slog through traffic. Not just other school run parents, lots of people who looked like they were driving to work. Taxis. Full buses. Not one tiny bit quieter. At lunchtime I went for a prescription and town was bustling. People chatting in groups. Town has lots of shops like Poundland, the Range, B&M - all packed. No cafes but groups of teens from the secondary schools and uni sat on walls and steps in the square having lunch. Tonight - fireworks at the neighbours where a group are having a bonfire gathering - maybe 8? My kids were in school today in large so-called bubbles of several hundred each.

This isn’t going to work.

Oh ffs - you really want/expect people to stay in doors shit scared like March?

People arnt scared now. People want to live thier life. There was no need to lockdown.

KindKylie · 05/11/2020 21:54

It sounds like you yourself had a completely standard day?

The roads round here were much quieter with a noticeable sense of restriction all around. Everyone on school run wearing masks now as requested by the school and no after school clubs or activities.

Ignoringequally · 05/11/2020 21:56

Fine where I am. Roads were quiet. High street dead (all shops except co-op and post office have had to close). Loads of fireworks from people’s gardens but I have no idea if people had friends round or if it was just households. All in masks on school run. Fairly obvious ‘lockdown’.

addictedtotheflats · 05/11/2020 21:56

Same here, no one is bothered any more. I met my friend for a walk with our 2 babies, lots of oldies in groups of more than 2, went to asda to do a shop, no different to any other day recently. Loads of cars and people about.

toomanypillows · 05/11/2020 21:57

I've only been to work today so not seen any town centres etc, but the roads were busier then usual this morning and I didn't really notice any difference at all when passing little shops and whatever.

I think what OP is trying to say that it's all a bit pointless if there are still swathes of people continuing as normal.

The only thing I did note is that one of the secondary schools I passed had students wearing masks outside and actually on their way to school for the first time

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/11/2020 22:00

If I hadn't watched the news I wouldn't have noticed any difference here. Everybody out and about as usual (including public transport).

33goingon64 · 05/11/2020 22:00

OP, I'd give up if I were you. The other current thread, about The Range, has demonstrated that your concerns aren't welcome here today. I agree with you that people seem to be not complying as much this time, possibly demonstrating a lack of care for others and potentially (ironically) extending the lockdown, but I think you're pissing in the wind. Try again next week maybe!

LilyPond2 · 05/11/2020 22:00

Thought roads were a bit quieter than usual when I drove my daughter to school this morning. And a stretch of road near the station which in normal times has lots of cars belonging to commuters parked on it had no cars parked on it at all.

ItCouldBeBunnies · 05/11/2020 22:01

Totally standard Thursday here and no different from any other day recently. We've had masks at school drop off for weeks already so that isn't different. The park was as busy as ever after school. The children were playing together, the grown ups were chatting. Tesco Express had plenty of stock. There were more fireworks near us than other years so that was nice.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 05/11/2020 22:01

Much busier here today than yesterday!! Roads mental! Apart from pubs and restaurants doing just takeaway it's more normal than before! We were tier 1 and was pretty much 95% compliance in April and the same until today! Now very low compliance and even mask wearing (according to shop staff) dropped 25% since yesterday! Many more older folk out and about! All those that I spoke to have just given up!!

treerain · 05/11/2020 22:02

Same round here. Traffic jams on the commute, groups of people on the street - mostly kids and the elderly, loads of people (public) in my hospital milling around chatting with masks off and drinking coffee etc.

Nothing that isn't 'allowed' or anything....just seems a bit pointless to tank the economy further when I'm not sure what it's going to achieve 🤷‍♀️

OhTheRoses · 05/11/2020 22:03

Went to petrol station tonight. Like a ghost town here. Empty roads at 6.30pm.

They have extended furlough until 31st March so I imagine we are locked down until then bah!

QueenPaws · 05/11/2020 22:04

Nope. Roads as busy as normal, people in and out of houses (I'm WFH so people watch out the window!)
Work was manic, everyone wanting to get a car serviced or buy a car whilst lockdown is on. I expected it to drop quieter but it's same as a standard work day. The car sales side is incredibly busy also

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 05/11/2020 22:04

Dh went to work, I did the school run, went to aldi, then stayed at home doing housework until time to do school run again. Park was busy after school like it is everyday. Seemed absolutely no different to any other day. Dh said town was very very quiet apparently.

Certainly doesn't feel like lockdown at all.

Mummiepig · 05/11/2020 22:04

Normal day here too, roads busy, lots of people in the shop I work in popping in for just a chocolate bar or lottery ticket, went food shopping car park was busy lots of people of all ages out and about

Comefromaway · 05/11/2020 22:06

Dh said that at Crewe station in rush hour the few passengers there were are vastly outnumbered by guards.

Qasd · 05/11/2020 22:06

Umm I will need to see the stars I am afraid in March people were clear on mumsnet no one was doing anything and all having parties only it turned out 80 percent complied.. mumsnet stories have a history of being unreliable re the national picture.

GuyFawkesHadTheRightIdea · 05/11/2020 22:07

Normal day here and so many fireworks tonight, starting at 5 and still going strong. Honestly I think it's a big eff you from the general public at large. We've had enough.

TiersTiersTiers · 05/11/2020 22:10

Actually yes, it is quiet here.

The school run was busy because all the children are still there but driving to and fro the school car park was quicker and not so much traffic around.

I shop late at night and when I did my shopping earlier the roads were really quiet.

This is Tier 1 though so pretty normal for people to just follow the guidelines. We all want it to stay low in the area and the vast majority are working towards that.

Poppyappeal · 05/11/2020 22:11

I do think it's a lot different to March though, we've done it before now so there is no novelty value, I'm not saying that flippantly, just stating a fact. People are nothing like as scared, good or bad, take that as you will.

starrynight19 · 05/11/2020 22:13

I really hope people do comply to try and reduce the numbers for Christmas.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 05/11/2020 22:14

What were you expecting?
Lovely mild, sunny day. Of course humans are going to behave like humans.

ilovesooty · 05/11/2020 22:14

@Remmy123

Oh ffs - you really want/expect people to stay in doors shit scared like March?

People arnt scared now. People want to live thier life. There was no need to lockdown.

I expect people to abide by the legislation, yes. I certainly disagree with gathering for bonfire parties in private gardens.
Bagelsandbrie · 05/11/2020 22:14

Same here. People aren’t scared enough this time round. If the NHS starts to crumble and people can’t get an ambulance for their kids (unrelated to Covid or otherwise) or can’t turn up at A and E for treatment because there aren’t enough staff to cope that’s the only time people will start to think “shit, maybe we should do this”. Otherwise it’s pretty much go fuck yourselves I’ll do what I like.

Whatatoodoodle · 05/11/2020 22:15

School run, roads and supermarket all as usual (well-same as last couple of months) during the day but roads seemed a bit quieter later on in the evening.
Nothing like the ghost town of March.
Kids are looking forward to riding their bikes on the pub car park again though
