I’m in England. This morning the school run was the usual massive slog through traffic. Not just other school run parents, lots of people who looked like they were driving to work. Taxis. Full buses. Not one tiny bit quieter. At lunchtime I went for a prescription and town was bustling. People chatting in groups. Town has lots of shops like Poundland, the Range, B&M - all packed. No cafes but groups of teens from the secondary schools and uni sat on walls and steps in the square having lunch. Tonight - fireworks at the neighbours where a group are having a bonfire gathering - maybe 8? My kids were in school today in large so-called bubbles of several hundred each.

This isn’t going to work.

All seemed pretty normal where I am except for the pubs, hairdressers etc on the village green being shut. No idea if people are in and out of each others houses - we are complying in that regard. Since DH and I both work from home now not much changes for us anyway.

Hophop26 · 05/11/2020 22:18

I wouldn’t put tier 1 and compliance together, I am in a tier 1 area and so many people are complacent because they think the area is very low risk and no feeling or sense of lockdown today here. We’ve stuck to the rule, wfh and only out for the school runs but it was manic and roads very busy

ReceptionTA · 05/11/2020 22:19

The roads seemed busier here this morning. The supermarket was busy. Work was busy (parents have been wearing masks for weeks, so no change) supermarket as busy as ever. I was hoping roads would be clearer so I could get back on my bike.

DS brought a friend home and when I pointed out rules were being broken both of them looked confused and said "but we've been together all day." If DS, who was good as gold during the first lockdown, doesn't get it I imagine average Joe doesn't either

EssentialHummus · 05/11/2020 22:19

Fairly quiet here but then we don’t have a branch of The Range nearby, and that seems to be the covid division bell.

lunalulu · 05/11/2020 22:19

Much quieter where I am. In a green university city. Way less traffic. Empty roads. Cyclists taking over again 🙂

bigchris · 05/11/2020 22:22

Well you can't go to most high street shops so that's different

You can't go to the pub, out for a meal, out to watch a film, to get your hair / nails / tattoos done, or go to the gym

I guess if you were rural with no pub you'd notice no different

Remmy123 · 05/11/2020 22:23

@ilovesooty

Since finding out my local large hospital has TWO covid patients I am wondering why this lockdown is necessary - all over news I'm being told hospitals are becoming overwhelmed?!

Lost my job in the last lockdown .. likely I'll lose my new job now too.

bigchris · 05/11/2020 22:23

Roads are busier because a lot of secondary pupils are being driven in by parents worried about buses

Generalconfusion · 05/11/2020 22:23

It sounds like you yourself had a completely standard day?

I WFH and my kids are in school so yes.

Notspecialflake · 05/11/2020 22:23

@TiersTiersTiers sounds like you think were tier 1 due to a superior type of people complying. That's really not how it works Hmm

GuyFawkesHadTheRightIdea · 05/11/2020 22:25

😂😂😂
Sweetchillijam · 05/11/2020 22:26

Agree Op and @33goingon64. Self and DH WFH but I picked DD up from an after school revision session as she’s year 11 and she’s absolutely frozen being in secondary school from 8.30-4.15 with all the classroom windows open. Lots of cars on the road and posts on FB with people openly saying they would be ignoring the latest lockdown rules.

Generalconfusion · 05/11/2020 22:26

I think I expected:

  • More people WFH so less traffic on the road
  • No household mixing
  • No group gatherings in public or private
  • People only shopping for essentials.

Obviously I was totally wrong but I thought that's what we were doing. It seems a bit silly and pointless for the small number of things that are closed to lose their businesses while the rest of society carries on as normal.

ImMoana · 05/11/2020 22:28

Normal day here too.
Queued for my costa and it was busier then usual.
Traffic same.
My DC’s club even went ahead as usual with assurances it was allowed as ‘educational’. Im not about to challenge them, although i’m sure they’re not exempt.
Didn’t go to the shops but will tomorrow.
I’m keeping my life as normal as I can.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 05/11/2020 22:31

I noticed there was much less traffic this morning than yesterday morning. (I'm one of the parents of secondary pupils driving them in because I'm worried about buses as mentioned above).

My little town seemed quieter - we usually have lots of day-trippers and while there were a few people about it wasn't exactly busy.

bigchris · 05/11/2020 22:32

It really must depend where you live because all the hairdressers , pubs and restaurants and non essential shops like paperchase, Waterstones, clothes shops , make out town quiet, it's not a small number

bigchris · 05/11/2020 22:34

Oh and all the tourist places closed like museums

Our library is open though for collection only and computers but if schools and unis are open libraries have to be too

Againstmachine · 05/11/2020 22:34

So the OP goes about doing their normal business and goes to town, and then complains that there are others in town. Hmm

My journey to work was busier this morning coming home lot quieter.

Pollynextdoor · 05/11/2020 22:37

DSs school has just closed due to lack of teaching staff.

bigchris · 05/11/2020 22:39

Whereabouts are you Polly?

littlefireseverywhere · 05/11/2020 22:41

It’s quiet where I too.

Pollynextdoor · 05/11/2020 22:42

@bigchris, north London

480Widdio · 05/11/2020 22:43

Small village in the Midlands, all as normal here today. We have had ENOUGH!,!

Tootsietoot · 05/11/2020 22:43

Loads of shops shut here (big city)

TheGreatWave · 05/11/2020 22:51

Don't know because I didn't go out.

DH did though (once to take his Mum to hospital, twice to her house administer medication) and said it wasn't particularly busy or quiet.

Has been lots more school traffic though, pleased to be at home this month so I don't have to do battle with it. (I'm trying to get to work)
