I’m in England. This morning the school run was the usual massive slog through traffic. Not just other school run parents, lots of people who looked like they were driving to work. Taxis. Full buses. Not one tiny bit quieter. At lunchtime I went for a prescription and town was bustling. People chatting in groups. Town has lots of shops like Poundland, the Range, B&M - all packed. No cafes but groups of teens from the secondary schools and uni sat on walls and steps in the square having lunch. Tonight - fireworks at the neighbours where a group are having a bonfire gathering - maybe 8? My kids were in school today in large so-called bubbles of several hundred each.

This isn’t going to work.

Much less traffic this morning on the school run.
Pub nearby shut
Lots more leisure cyclists and walkers out and about (presumably because now furloughed)

Generalconfusion · 05/11/2020 22:53

So the OP goes about doing their normal business and goes to town, and then complains that there are others in town.

Schools are open so I have to take my children to them otherwise I get fined. I went to the pharmacy to get life-sustaining medicine for a member of my family - also allowed under the rules. I did not meet up with friends or browse the shops or have a party or go into an office.

Normal here. - work was busy as we are open this time round
You’d never know anything was going on but since most things are open I’m not sure this lockdown is going to achieve anything

I think pp is right people aren’t scared this time and just want to get on with life

NullcovoidNovember · 05/11/2020 23:03

Same busyness here as well but I didn't expect any difference because school is open, many people cannot work from home, what has changed really?

prowlingbrooms · 05/11/2020 23:03

Queue in Mac Donald’s. Crowd on street. Bit of a crush in Poundland. Florist open )essential?). Buses occupied. Slightly better mask Compliance.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 05/11/2020 23:07

We are back to massive queues!! Boots is the worst! The 2 clothes shops have been begging for business since masks were made mandatory to stop them closing has no impact! Little gift shops close in the winter again no impact, 'essential shops' busier than normal, queues, less masks more takeaways, more people standing in the road, much more traffic, buses empty! Believe what you like but for those on furlough here it's basically a we get paid to do what we like! No police (3hours for a stabbing!) no access to any NHS services regardless or our rates so no one gives a shit anymore!!

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 05/11/2020 23:08

I think barely anyone who had gone back to offices has returned to WFH today. My DH worked from him start of lockdown to June and then his work insisted they all go back (because they’re a bunch of control freaks).

This time they just said ‘we’re carrying on as we were’ so DH and the others don’t have a choice. From what I’ve heard about the traffic I think that will be the same for many people.

Generalconfusion · 05/11/2020 23:20

I already couldn't see the point of the lockdown with schools still on but looking at town today (from a safe distance, all you nitpickers) it just seemed nuts to even pretend it was going to make any difference.

@Remmy123

Oh ffs - you really want/expect people to stay in doors shit scared like March?

People arnt scared now. People want to live thier life. There was no need to lockdown.

You don’t get to pick and choose which laws you comply with Hmm
movingonup20 · 05/11/2020 23:24

Only differences are nobody was sitting in McDonald's, my favourite cafe was shut and costa was shut, all the shops were open for "click and collect" which seemed to involved the shop staff bringing items to the door for you to see rather than stepping inside

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 05/11/2020 23:24

I had to work today (essential, can not WFH all the time).
Roads were quiet on way in and out.
Every single shop in my town is shut apart from Post Office, Poundland and Tesco/Sainsburys. It's too cold to fanny about outside, so I assume most people are not meeting up with anybody.

Christmaspud20 · 05/11/2020 23:25

Nope.
Drive through our little hight Street, not the main city.
Greggs , superdrug, wilko poundland. Polish food store. World food store. Sainsburys Iceland. All open.
Only things close. Charity shops. New look and peacocks plus card factory
To be fair the shops I go for were all open.
Although today I wasn't shopping. Just driving through.

This is barely a lockdown.

I took dd ti park. A massive group of about 8 mums and 13 kids.
They were distancing but still socialising.

Lots of other small groups too.
Traffic was horrendous

Felt like any other day.
To be honest except for visiting the farm or soft play. This has zero affect on my day to day life.

Lightsabre · 05/11/2020 23:27

My local areas were busy too and traffic was still heavy in SE London. I think it's because those furloughed are out shopping. Last time, lockdown was sunny and warm so people were in gardens but now they're in the shops. I'm sure Next was open as I drove past?

Muffinhead12 · 05/11/2020 23:28

I live in the town centre and it's been super quiet where I live, but we also have low cases aswell. Went for a walk this evening at about 7 and our local park had lots of dog walkers.

Redbirds · 05/11/2020 23:34

I'm in teir 3, our hospitals are almost full, it was quiet and everyone was in twos social distanced walking. Everyone in masks and shops etc shut except for the ones mentioned.

Unsure33 · 05/11/2020 23:43

@Redbirds

As your hospitals are full I hope your area do stick to the rules. It must be scary .

People who are ignoring it . Best of luck because I know what is happening in some other countries and you might be in for a shock .

Luckily I am in an area where most people are listening and if as is indicated we go back to local lock downs I think we will be ok .

TheGreatWave · 05/11/2020 23:47

Once the weather turns no one will want to queue outside shops.

Torvean32 · 05/11/2020 23:50

@Remmy123

Oh ffs - you really want/expect people to stay in doors shit scared like March?

People arnt scared now. People want to live thier life. There was no need to lockdown.

Maybe it shouldn't be about being scared. Maybe it should be respect for advice given by scientists and Drs to politicians. To prevent higher cases and to give ppl a chance of Christmas why can't ppl be selfless and do the 4 weeks.

We've had a 3 week full lockdown after the original one. We then had a 15 day circuit break. We are still not allowed visitors in our house.

We will have constant lockdowns until rules are followed and a vaccine is in place.

Longdistance · 05/11/2020 23:57

Going to work this morning after 9am in s different town in a different county, it was quiet. Coming home from work, passing the shops there were a tonne of spaces where normally you can’t get parked, there was only the odd car parked up.
My home town, I went to the supermarket this evening, there were cars, not as many, the shop wasn’t too busy, there were people. Queue took ages. I bought my weekly shop, those in the supermarket were buying for the next few days.

Bouledeneige · 06/11/2020 00:05

Traffic was reasonably busy at school drop off time. All the shops were closed except food shops. I didn't see what buses were like. I went on a walk with a friend at lunchtime as the weather was beautiful but although I saw a number of couples I didn't see any groups. To be fair it felt better - a bit more buzz than March but no terrible behaviour on show. I live alone as my DC are at uni so its nice to still feel part of a community.

pisspants · 06/11/2020 00:44

I don't know I've not been anywhere other than to walk the dog near my house

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/11/2020 06:28

I'm not sure why you should think anything would be different. Certainly nothing is for my family. We are all still going to school and work (as we did in lock down 1), we were avoiding going to anywhere like bars, restaurants, cafes, unnecessary shops anyway. Our tier meant we couldn't see friends or family. Literally nothing has changed for us.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 06/11/2020 06:33

I’ve booked to go to a National Trust garden tomorrow and it’s all sold out for the whole weekend, I doubt people will stop in if the rules say they can go out

Enoughnowstop · 06/11/2020 06:35

There was no obvious reduction in traffic where I am. I would say my commute home was busier than usual.

PurBal · 06/11/2020 06:49

DH said yesterday "if that's lockdown, I'm a banana"
