To refuse to wear a face mask

Outside my daughters primary school as I wait for her after school?
I was asked to wear one today as I stood outside the gate so my daughter in year 6 could see me and leave her teacher.
It's not an enclosed space, not even inside the school gate.
So who is being unreasonable? The school with this ridiculous request, or me?

It’s nonsense OP.

My children's school has just brought this in and I have to wait 15mins between picking up siblings. So I go for for a walk in between pick ups. I am claustrophobic and 15mins in a mask is too much for me.

fullofhope100 · 05/11/2020 20:06

@KarmaNoMore

You of course. It is not quite reassuring for the teacher to have to have a child in her class whose family gives the impression of not keeping to the rules.

At the end of the day, the mask is to protect the others, not you, so if you decide not to wear it when asked you are actually implying you don’t give a shit about people around you.

Another one.

firstimemamma · 05/11/2020 20:08

Loads other schools are asking parents to do the same op, your school is far from the only one.

Sirzy · 05/11/2020 20:10

Wait well away from school until the last minute. Then put on the mask for the short time it takes to collect her.

Really shouldn’t be an issue for the sake of a couple of minutes

BasiliskStare · 05/11/2020 20:11

To be honest I think you should wear the mask - as others have said - why would you not ?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 05/11/2020 20:16

No one should be forced to wear a face covering outside.

LadyMinerva · 05/11/2020 20:20

Masks have been compulsory here for at least the last 2 months. Possibly longer.. Time seems to move differently during covid! Even in rural areas where you can go all day without seeing another person you had to wear a mask. We have all but eradicated the virus. Almost a week without any new cases. Lockdown and masks work. Short term pain for long term gain.

I understand that there are some that are unable to wear masks for a variety of reasons. But those who can, should.

Happyheartlovelife · 05/11/2020 20:22

I have tubes out of my nose. I also have oxygen.

I still have to stand with 400 odd other parents who don't wear masks. Regardless of my own health.

flumposie · 05/11/2020 20:29

Yabu. I've been doing this at my daughter's school since September. I've never seen one parent without a mask. People insist schools stay open but parents refuse to do minor things like wear a mask at drop off.

doubleshotespresso · 05/11/2020 20:32

OP what would it cost you to wear a mask?
What's your issue?
My God there are folks working 14 hour shifts wearing masks and you're actually asking this question?

Yes you're outside. A school. Which basically represents a mass gathering at either end of the day... it's surely not that difficult unless you've got health issues which exempt you?

Christmaspud20 · 05/11/2020 20:33

I wouldn't wear one out in the street, waiting for a school or not.

I rarely do the school run unless it's lashing down. But I drive past many schools locally and I can honeslty say I see prob 10% of parents even distancing outside the gates lined up. And not many wear masks.
Were in a low area.

Numberblock7 · 05/11/2020 20:50

I suspect they lead to a negligible reduction in transmission given it’s outside and for just a few moments- though I think they cause a much greater reduction in chit chat and socialising.

But quite honestly I pity our headteacher, who every single day goes out on the playground to get soaked, try and get parents to distance, get complained at, get complained at for the opposite reasons etc and then returns to the office for several more hours work. They (and lots of the staff) work weekends, evenings and most of the holidays doing a difficult job with immense responsibility and bugger all guidance and an ever increasing number of people whinging at them about absolutely trivial shit. If they want us to wear a mask to pick up I will. If they want me to wear a bloody ballet tutu and a snorkel that’s what I’ll do, I’m just grateful they’re still doing the job and haven’t thrown in the towel, I would have.

PumpkinsPatch · 05/11/2020 20:55

You.

notcreativeforacoolname · 05/11/2020 20:58

Apparently it's new guidelines. It's no bother to wear one for such a short time with pick up and drop off. I don't really see what all the fuss is about. Just wear the mask for 10 mins Ffs!

Well said Numberblock

This kind of frothing is the reason why people exaggerate their medical conditions in order not to have to wear a mask.

I will wear one in shops, because I am not going to argue the toss with some poor M&S assistant who would possibly agree with me. It's embarrassing for both of us.

I have no medical conditions, other than being menopausal and finding masks intolerably hot.

So I will wear them in shops, but I will absolutely not wear them in any other situations.

pastandpresent · 05/11/2020 21:01

The way I think is that if the school enforce some rules, there are normally good reason behind it. Like it's not always possible to sd at the school gate.
Teachers and school are under enormous pressure to keep the school safe and open. Us parents should respond by supporting the decisions they make, when the decision is reasonable and appropriate.

Randomschoolworker19 · 05/11/2020 21:08

It is pretty simple to be honest.

You either follow the rules that the school has set out or you don't go on school premises.

I work at a school and as a TA one of my responsibilities is to be a steward at both drop off and pick ups. I have to wear a mask at these times, I also have to wear one any time I leave our classroom or enter a communal area as well as when I am at after school care. This means I could be wearing a mask for 3-4 hours a day.

Wearing a mask for 10 minutes is not a big deal.

Jesus Christ, do you think people complained about putting black outs up during the blitz? Don't be a dick. Wear a mask.

batman7654 · 05/11/2020 21:17

It's because parents may not always SD at school gates, and trying to make schools as safer/be able to stay open longer.

HitchikersGuide · 05/11/2020 21:33

Yanbu.
It's ludicrous that masks have reached quasi religious status.

MissMarplesGlove · 05/11/2020 21:36

So who is being unreasonable? The school with this ridiculous request, or me?

YOU.

poshme · 05/11/2020 21:40

@Randomschoolworker19 but this isn't school premises. This is the pavement outside school.

We have been asked to wear masks on school premises. Which I will if I go into the premises. I collect DS from just outside- he walks out if school grounds and waits fir me on the pavement.

I walk up, call his name & we walk to the car. I will not he wearing a mask for that.

At the moment there are no government rules to say we have to wear masks as we walk along pavements. So I won't.

personwifemum · 05/11/2020 21:41

Teachers are putting themselves at massive risk, I have no problem wearing a mask on the school run.

Especially now it's cold, they are excellent nose warmers
