To refuse to wear a face mask

Outside my daughters primary school as I wait for her after school?
I was asked to wear one today as I stood outside the gate so my daughter in year 6 could see me and leave her teacher.
It's not an enclosed space, not even inside the school gate.
So who is being unreasonable? The school with this ridiculous request, or me?

OP posts:
timetest · 05/11/2020 18:46

If that is what the school asks, do it. It’s tough enough for schools at the moment without parents ignoring the rules.

JillofTrades · 05/11/2020 18:46

Ask yourself why you are so stubborn about this? Why would you not?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/11/2020 18:47

I have found a great Donald Trump mask on Amazon (spit). I wasn't able to post the link (small hands)

But anyway it's fantastic everyone keeps far more than two metres away from me now!

groutingqueen · 05/11/2020 18:47

You are. They've asked you to do it so why wouldn't you?

You aren't the same poster who posted about the other mum sending her child to school in shorts are you because she was as contrary as you sound

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/11/2020 18:47

You.

It's not a ridiculous request.

Just wear a mask.

ShowingOut · 05/11/2020 18:47

@northernmonkeys100

Just wear a mask as it does no good but it does signal how right on message you are. So many bedwetters on here.
Oh p off. The mask-wearing is to stop transmission at the school gates. But I'm sure you know better Hmm
DenimDrift · 05/11/2020 18:47

does anyone else suffer with not being able to breathe well after wearing a mask?

i find i can't take in deep breaths, really struggle and become a bit panicked!

is it just me?

SeasonFinale · 05/11/2020 18:48

Schools are asking this of parents who hover just outside the grounds because they are mixing with parents of kids on different bubbles and it is to decrease the risk of groups having to be sent home.

I assume you wear one shopping so just do what they are asking and stop being so dramatic and antagonistic.

Fuzzyspringroll · 05/11/2020 18:48

We are asking parents to wear masks at pickup. There are usually loads of parents really close together.
Their kids manage to wear them for most of the day, including on the playground and for pickup (they don't have to wear them in the classroom). Teachers wear theirs all day, everywhere. It's really not unreasonable for parents to wear them for 10 minutes while picking their kids up. Seriously, the 6-year-olds I teach can cope...

Nochangeplease · 05/11/2020 18:48

I’m not wearing it at pick up either. It seems pointless and I don’t like wearing it so I won’t. I wear it in shops. If I was going within 10 metres of a teacher I’d put it on as a courtesy but I’m not so I won’t.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 05/11/2020 18:48

Everyone is doing it here.
Why be a twat, OP, if you can possibly not be? That is the question you should be asking yourself.

Chloemol · 05/11/2020 18:48

You and don’t tell me you stand 2m away from everyone else because I don’t believe you. No one I have seen standing outside the schools chatting stand 2 Malay

Let her see you as an example on how to happily wear a mask

m0therofdragons · 05/11/2020 18:51

Lots of people gathering in one place all walking towards one school... just wear a mask. Why be so argumentative Hmm

DrDavidBanner · 05/11/2020 18:54

@Hobnobswantshernameback

Oh god enough of these fucking mask threads Post them in the bloody covid section so we can ignore Sick to death of all the drama llamas on both sides of this shitshow Most people are plodding on Quit with the attention seeking bollocks
I wish MN had like buttons, this is all that needs to be said and would make threads like this so much shorter.
Saladfingersscaresme · 05/11/2020 18:54

In the grand scheme of things does it really matter, just wear a mask, stop wingeing.

marmitegirl01 · 05/11/2020 18:54

We ( as staff) had to wear masks in communal areas today for first day, and parents when collecting.
I am on gate duty every morning & afternoon
Parents are not keeping away from each other when waiting to drop off or collect. They seem to like to bunch up and chat.
Just do what you’ve been asked. 🤷‍♀️

Aragog · 05/11/2020 18:54

Its guidance passed down from many LEAs.
The school will be advising this because they and/or their LEA believes it will help.
There may be other children. parents or staff who are clinically vulnerable.

Unless you are medically exempt why wouldn't you just wear one?

Most people (parents and school staff) wants schools to stay open so this means every also needs to do what they can, where they can.

Kseniya · 05/11/2020 18:56

we are completely confused!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 05/11/2020 18:56

@gindinner

I'm outside the school, outside the fence. I don't think any other school in my area is requesting this.
Your daughter isn't at any other school so it's irrelevant.

Just wear a bloody mask & stop making such a fuss FFS

Aragog · 05/11/2020 18:57

But what if someone is just walking by the school, to get to their house near the school?

But you are not just walking by.
You are stood outside, presumably with other parents and children around you who are also waiting for their children to finish school.
So most likely you are waiting, not quickly walking by.

As I said - if you want your child to be able to keep going to school whilst lockdown 2 goes on, then help out by following the guidelines the school are setting in order to keep everyone safe.

Aragog · 05/11/2020 18:58

Can't she leave the school grounds without them setting eyes on you?

This - go and wait on the next street away from the school gates.
Then you can stand, social distance, and keep your mask off.

Rockpapershoot · 05/11/2020 18:59

Ffs why would you not do everything you can to keep schools open. Put the damn mask on.

Diva66 · 05/11/2020 18:59

You

Yellownotblue · 05/11/2020 18:59

YABU. The same guidance applies in my area. Why on earth do you not want to wear one? Especially in winter when it keeps you warm and comfy.
