To refuse to wear a face mask

Outside my daughters primary school as I wait for her after school?
I was asked to wear one today as I stood outside the gate so my daughter in year 6 could see me and leave her teacher.
It's not an enclosed space, not even inside the school gate.
So who is being unreasonable? The school with this ridiculous request, or me?

Just do it

kingsleyhimself · 05/11/2020 19:00

@DenimDrift

does anyone else suffer with not being able to breathe well after wearing a mask?

i find i can't take in deep breaths, really struggle and become a bit panicked!

is it just me?

Me, I struggled for weeks to wear one until someone told me to try one that's got a stiffening thingy in it so it doesn't stick to your mouth when you breathe in. A bit nicer looking is a big square scarf folded over to make a triangle so it's double layered (Google Amber Heard at court for the Jonny Depp case and she's wearing a red one like it).

Both really easy to breath in and wear for a while Smile

AtrociousCircumstance · 05/11/2020 19:00

You’re embarrassing yourself. Just wear it.

Feedingthebirds1 · 05/11/2020 19:01

This is probably aimed at those who stand around in groups waiting for their DCs, without any distancing. But they have to send the message out to everyone.

Bleughbleughbleugh12 · 05/11/2020 19:01

I would not be doing this. No way

audweb · 05/11/2020 19:01

We’ve been told to wear masks at drop off/pick up. I currently pick up at 5pm with no other adults around, my child gets sent out from the club so I don’t even come into contact with the adults there and I’m supposed to wear a mask?! I’ve been avidly following the rules. This one is nonsensical. Who is the mask for? I’m outside, no other adults collecting my own child. Tell me this rule isn’t just so it looks like education are doing something. When I drop her off, I’m standing in a public car park on a main road, staying well away from other adults. Where is the risk? I wear a mask everywhere else, this seems pointless. Tell me how I stop the spread doing this. Makes no sense. I could understand if all the parents were bunched together but I am literally alone.

This is what happens to me. I wore one for two hours last weekend and it brought on an asthma attack, it took me two days to recover, not great when I have no one to to rely on, being a single parent to autistic sons. I actually don't chat to parents and always socially distance. I definitely give a wide berth to this that like to huddle together.
Occasionally I have to take my youngest autistic son with me, and he needs to be able to see my mouth so I can clearly instruct him on where to stand and so he can hear me. He has no concept of danger. Thank you to those who actually managed to answer me in a civil manner. The rest of you made no coherent arguement and I received no useful opinions from you. So settle down now.

Just put one on and be done with it.

Barbie222 · 05/11/2020 19:03

I would wear one or make arrangements for your daughter to leave by herself if she is Y6.

Mydogmylife · 05/11/2020 19:03

nosswith · 05/11/2020 19:03

You can have a face shield instead of a face covering.

eaglejulesk · 05/11/2020 19:03

Oh for goodness sake! I despair of people. YABU - how difficult is it to wear a mask for a few minutes, stop being a drama llama.

IwishIwasyoda · 05/11/2020 19:04

I'm with you OP. I'll wear a mask while queuing to get into the playground and while in school grounds but outside, on the street not close to other people - no. I have noticed people who wear masks tend to shout more thus spreading their germ-laden droplets more.

PriceEmUp · 05/11/2020 19:04

Oh my god. It’s really not difficult to slap a piece of material over your nose and mouth for a few minutes is it? Are you really that lazy?

Or is it just a selfish stance because you don’t quite understand the importance of because you are ignorant ?

I’ll never understand these “I’m not wearing a mask!” Idiots.

IwishIwasyoda · 05/11/2020 19:04

Can't have a face shield in Scotland without a mask as well

year5teacher · 05/11/2020 19:05

Who the fuck cares, just put it on. It’s not a bloody hardship to wear a mask for five minutes. Jesus.

Bleughbleughbleugh12 · 05/11/2020 19:09

Everyone saying it’s not a big deal and sniggering at the OP. It may not be a big deal for you, different people have different breaking points, we’ve ALL gone through so so many changes and some people struggle with that! Let’s be a bit more understanding....

5zeds · 05/11/2020 19:10

If another parent has Covid and stands next to you maskless will you be ok with catching it and possibly spreading it to someone who dies from it before you know? Will you be happy with the school closing completely because they have cases across multiple bubbled classes? Are you happy for your daughter to have to do something for much of the day you can’t be bothered to do for a few minutes?

Children at one of my children’s school walk to the bus and wear masks all the way safe to keep adults safe. I’d be ashamed to be so flakey OP.

Aesopfable · 05/11/2020 19:11

YANBU. I Scottish government guidelines only state on school property. If you are social distancing there is no more reason to wear one on the street outside the school, than on any other street. It is notable that even the Scottish government guidelines do not suggest wearing one it you are not on school Property

Redburnett · 05/11/2020 19:11

Wear a mask. Just play your part in helping to reduce the transmission of the virus. Why would any intelligent person refuse?

phoenixrosehere · 05/11/2020 19:12

YABU to not say that you have asthma and are likely exempt from wearing them to begin with. Why not simply inform the school of this?

The school are trying to do the best they can with the current and ongoing situation and the new lockdown measures so no, they’re not being unreasonable. I will also add you’re lucky if the parents/guardians at your child’s school can wear a mask and social distance.
My oldest son’s school can’t even get 25% of parents to wear one despite asking and there are always some mums standing around with no face covering and not social distancing standing next to the pavement where the mass majority of parents/guardians and children have to pass by to get into the school having a chat as if they couldn’t do it somewhere else other than school grounds. I wear a mask because SD is impossible with these types because they don’t know what 2 meter is or even 1 and if they do they obviously don’t care.

alexdgr8 · 05/11/2020 19:12

why not just let her walk home alone. solves several problems.

Pascal2908 · 05/11/2020 19:13

Does it really pain you to do this ? If no reason not too then just do it.. our teachers are all ready being thrown to the wolves .. (I'm not a teacher and no longer have a child in school btw so no vested interest just common sense !)

Aesopfable · 05/11/2020 19:14

‘Just do it’ it not reason enough.
