Nor any of the other shops unfairly dodging the lockdown closure by claiming they are essential (someone on another thread's, local shoe shop, local branch of Next) etc.

It's bloody ridiculous. The more we are out and about, the more this virus has a chance to keep spreading. Don't click and collect from your local business, place orders online from them or phone up and arrange delivery.

Just stop f**king going out. If you don't HAVE to go out for work, essential shopping - ie food or medicine, just stay at home.

If you don't, don't moan when bloody Boris is on our screens on 2nd December saying the lockdown is extended.

It’s almost unbearably poignant that you think browsing Poundland makes the difference between living and existing.

It's almost unbearably thick that some people think browsing Poundland makes the difference between 'staying safe' or not.

dementedpixie · 05/11/2020 22:18

It doesn't really sell much flat-pack furniture though! Mine used to be Homebase. It has craft, soft furnishings, home wear, pet section, garden centre and right now, a Christmas section

Quaagars · 05/11/2020 22:19

@GuyFawkesHadTheRightIdea

Not to worry, I think the opposite effect has happened to what OP was hoping for
what with

  • people asking what is The Range? and
  • Ooh, didn't know The Range was open still

more of a traffic for them thread lol.
As I said earlier, maybe a bit of reverse psychology next time needed, lol and might get different answers Grin

dementedpixie · 05/11/2020 22:19

Forgot it sells paint and DIY stuff too

MrsMomoa · 05/11/2020 22:20

Oh bore off!

dementedpixie · 05/11/2020 22:21

Very true
More like less of the stress of furniture assembling and more of the fun fluffy things like cushions and tea light holders then Grin

IcedPurple · 05/11/2020 22:24

Anyway I shall bow out gracefully and leave you all to it.

Oh, you'll be back.

laudemio · 05/11/2020 22:24

Thank you @quaagers and @dementedpixie I'm going to see if there is one near me. Never heard of it before! Is it good quality stuff? I'm guessing it must be as it seems very popular Smile

rumandbiscuits · 05/11/2020 22:25

Where is line drawn here OP?

I am a support worker and am currently supporting a homeless man who has been offered a flat but he has no means of furnishing the property because the local authority aren't able to help him due to the local second hand furniture store they use being closed and due to his circumstances he is not able to afford to furnish this property himself. Therefore he has had to refuse the flat and stay in his temporary accommodation due to having a number of health problems which deem him extremely vulnerable. So to you 'the range' or a second hand furniture store isn't 'essential' but to other people it's a life line. How dare you preach to people you don't know about where they can and cannot go. Concentrate on your own life and get your head out of the fucking clouds.

Also news flash if we all do as you want and stay in for 4 weeks this virus is still going to be here in December it is not going away!!!!! Lockdowns don't kill the virus! Lockdowns kill the economy!

nicky7654 · 05/11/2020 22:58

If it's open I will shop there and I don't give a fig what you think!!! I wear a mask and wash my hands so what's the problem???? Who do you think keeps food/essentials available? Who do you.think works.the factories? Who teaches the children, cleans the hospitals? Etc etc etc life goes on and I will not be made to feel like a germ spreader lol

ancientgran · 05/11/2020 22:59

The Range does sell furniture, my husband is disabled and it was the cheapest place we found for an electric rise and recline chair. We've had it for 4 years and it is great. I don't know if people would class it as essential but it has made a fantastic difference to his life and mine, he's 8 inches taller than me and 6stone heavier and I'm not sure how my back would be if we hadn't bought it.

Port1aCastis · 05/11/2020 23:05

Oh blimey this thread still going, the Range has definitely made a few quid out of it haven't they!

Quaagars · 05/11/2020 23:07

@Torri67
I think that's what is so blindingly obvious is that it will take all of us to make small sacrifices like not going to Poundland or wherever for four weeks

I have a Poundland a 5 minute walk from here.
I also have two kids still at school.
They sell
washing powder
shampoo
snack pack type things like raisins, cereal bars for when at school
basically one of my nearest shop selling essentials.
Should I just stop?
We're not all buying tatty bollocks (and even if we were, someone's tatty bollocks is someone else's essentials)
In other words just stop judging

LimitIsUp · 05/11/2020 23:12

Like many others on this thread had no idea the Range was open and have now resolved to go. Thanks op

Lovely1a2b3c · 05/11/2020 23:12

@Torri67

Just because you can type a goady, moany, guilt-tripping thread on the internet, doesn't mean you should.

It's what the internet is for surely?

And it's a thread born of frustration. Total and utter frustration at the stupid, selfish behaviour of people in the UK (as so beautifully demonstrated by poster on this thread).

If you lose a relative or friend or someone you know does, do remember that you were part of the body of people who felt going shopping was more important than contributing to the national effort to stop the spread of the virus Hmm. Really, do remember that.

I agree OP.

I would argue that this is not what OP meant.

PickAChew · 05/11/2020 23:17

@Torri67

Well I went to work (yes, I'm one of those who HAS to) and this thread blew up. Thanks for all the name calling and judgements upon my character, luckily my wings of steel can protect me from that . Most of the people who disagree have said exactly what I would expect from those who feel buying baubles and craft supplies trump doing your part to stem the virus.

I think that's what is so blindingly obvious is that it will take all of us to make small sacrifices like not going to Poundland or wherever for four weeks. It's such a small ask for such a big win but it seems it's just too much to ask of some people. It's like dealing with toddlers stamping their feet and screaming 'but I waaaaaant to'.

We've all been out shopping since July. Four weeks we've been asked to stay at home Hmm.

Anyway I shall bow out gracefully and leave you all to it. Thanks to those who are also right agreed. Those who don't, do enjoy The Range, it will be SUCH a worthwhile trip.

When I pop into pond land, it's for toothbrushes, cleaning products and so on. Do I kill fewer grannies than someone popping in for socks, pens and second hand CDs?
PickAChew · 05/11/2020 23:21

Reckon this thread has more socks than pound land, mind.

tobee · 05/11/2020 23:30

@Torri67

Well my vulnerable parents and parents in law who CAN'T go shopping or to the gym/cinema/collect their grandchildren from their after school clubs - hard to find a more entitled set of things some poor person is 'losing' Hmm - thank you all for your lack contribution. As do my friend who lost her FIL, my DH's colleague who lost a parent and and a grandparent in the space of a week.

I haven't been out to any shops since March as shielding extremely vulnerable had letters and emails Dh. Nor has he. Nor have my two adult dc.

I'm not going to tell others where they can and can't go coz not an asshole.

Quaagars · 05/11/2020 23:34

@PickAChew

Reckon this thread has more socks than pound land, mind.
What makes you come to that conclusion? I just see people having differing opinions Smile
TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 05/11/2020 23:37

I have a 3 year old....do you know how affected she was last time?

I'm so sorry. My friend's child went from a happy, chatty 6 year old to a child who stopped talking and was pulling out her hair because of her distress. He is in therapy trying to cope with the fall out of having not being able to stop her falling apart. That's precisely the kind of person who needs to pop out to a shop full of cheerful rubbish and escape the world once a week or so. That's why I can't stomach threads like this - his is just one story and there are millions more out there. No one has any idea what is going on for other people and keeping up a routine and getting out the house can be hugely therapeutic. It's not just 'four weeks' after a summer of shopping, it's a vital bit of normality after months of stress and fear and disruption.

PickAChew · 05/11/2020 23:40

I've seen a few names with a similar formula doing the echo chamber thing but somehow not acknowledging each other.

Quaagars · 05/11/2020 23:40

Down to defining essentials innit
What's non essential about pens?
Pretty essential when it comes to school and college age kids who have pens but have lost them all again
