Nor any of the other shops unfairly dodging the lockdown closure by claiming they are essential (someone on another thread's, local shoe shop, local branch of Next) etc.

It's bloody ridiculous. The more we are out and about, the more this virus has a chance to keep spreading. Don't click and collect from your local business, place orders online from them or phone up and arrange delivery.

Just stop f**king going out. If you don't HAVE to go out for work, essential shopping - ie food or medicine, just stay at home.

If you don't, don't moan when bloody Boris is on our screens on 2nd December saying the lockdown is extended.

Schools aren't shut as they're essential, as you know.

But they weren't 'essential' back in March.

If schools where hundreds of people are gathered in a small space for hours on end remain open (and I'm certainly not advocating for them to be shut) then people picking up a few strands of tinsel in B&Q would seem to be trivial by comparison.

Studies in the States have found that supermarket workers are indeed at higher risk of contracting Covid.

But we're not in 'the States'.

What is your evidence that 'non-essential' shops are hotbeds of infection in the UK?

RedCup1 · 05/11/2020 12:43

@PurpleDaisies

SAGE looked at the risk of transmission through retail and what effect closing non essential retail would have. It is described as “very minimal”. The main positive is it means the message is simple for people.

Perhaps some people on the thread might want to think about that before accusing other posters of trying to kill us all and keep us locked down forever by going to buy some wallpaper.

It makes sense that retail doesn't drive transmission, as you don't tend to stay in a shop for long or have close contact with the same people for long.

Wow, it did not take long for the self appointed MN Covid police to report for duty.

Perhaps all shops should shut and everyone gets a delivery of oats, milk and veg to subside on. Would that be miserable enough?

This doesn't feel anything like a lockdown (thank god) in some ways. Many shops are open, all restaurants and pubs offering take out. Many places have opened anyway and most people are still working.

The only thing we can't do, despite pp is run around naked in range covered in glitter but we could give it a try!!

We can meet up with a friend a time outside, and hopefully by December we will all be out in restaurants again :)

motherf88 · 05/11/2020 12:50

Just popping in to remind people that lockdown won't "make this be over quicker". The virus isn't going anywhere. It's about flattening the curve so the NHS isn't overwhelmed. No one is aiming to eradicate the virus (except NZ maybe, def not the UK). We may as well sensibly and safely shop to keep the economy slightly afloat.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 05/11/2020 12:50

Is the Range open? That's great. My daughter loves choosing craft stuff in there.
Was very pleased to see Hotel Chocolat will be open too. Looking forward to calling past for coffee and to have a look at their advent calendars on the way back from the park.

Well be fair. They have had a couple of months planning their bosom hoiking murderer screaming posts since June. They were ready and raring to go. I bet we couldn't deploy the army as fast as this lot can come out of the woodwork.

Fingers crossed!!!

I bet the ban on naked glitter dashing in the range is not specified anywhere in law as long as it socially distanced Grin

Hmm except for the nakedness maybe , better add some strategically place loo rolls.

FeedTheVoodooLilyMumsnet · 05/11/2020 12:56

Hi folks

Peace and love.

@Torri67

Just because you can type a goady, moany, guilt-tripping thread on the internet, doesn't mean you should.

It's what the internet is for surely?

And it's a thread born of frustration. Total and utter frustration at the stupid, selfish behaviour of people in the UK (as so beautifully demonstrated by poster on this thread).

If you lose a relative or friend or someone you know does, do remember that you were part of the body of people who felt going shopping was more important than contributing to the national effort to stop the spread of the virus Hmm. Really, do remember that.

I have lost a parent. Like most of the people who sadly died during the first wave, it was a healthcare acquired infection that she contracted in hospital after being admitted from a care home.

A perfectly legal, socially distanced trip to the range with respect for hygiene measures isn't a significant risk. And if it stops people from engaging in other activities that involve much closer contact with other people then so be it.

flumposie · 05/11/2020 13:04

I wont go out unnecessarily but will go shopping as something to do when not at work mixing with hundreds of pupils a day. I feel totally safe shopping, not so much at work .

MilkLady02 · 05/11/2020 13:07

I’m with you motherof88
I don’t understand people saying if you do xyz this will just go on longer. There is no quick end on the horizon and it certainly won’t come about by not going to the range!

Are all the selfless non shoppers going to open their houses to all the people who are going to find themselves jobless and having their homes repossessed in the near future?

I’d rather keep the economy limping along and try and help people stay in employment if possible. I’m not planning on coughing over other customers or anyone’s shopping so I’m sure I can go in and out without infecting several unsuspecting victims (with an infection that in all probability I don’t have).

DominaShantotto · 05/11/2020 13:11

There is no quick end to this - so we may as well snazz it up with a bit of glitter, spruce it up with some cushions and mop it with cleaning products.

oooh where sells such things?!

dottiedodah · 05/11/2020 13:12

Userxx Hope so too! DH and my good friends birthdays are this month too! Was hoping to go to Koh Thai, and The Horns (our local country pub) Just hope they re open in Dec and we get a space !

boobot1 · 05/11/2020 13:16

@Nancydowns

Oh good, the self ritouse lockdown police are back.

If I wanna go down the range and get some craft stuff for the kids, or some wool for myself, or some fucking Christmas light to do my house up like the north Pole - just to bring a bit of joy into my life - I bloody well will.

Me too
Torvean32 · 05/11/2020 13:17

BoJo is the only leader that doesn't do lockdown properly.
Its been tougher in all the devolved countries.

TheKeatingFive · 05/11/2020 13:18

Has it not occurred to the ‘become a hermit, it’ll be over sooner’ crew that they were saying that in April?

It’s fupping November. It’s not over. It won’t be over til there’s widespread vaccination. In the meantime, in the interests of keeping people sane and having some semblance of economic activity, a perfectly legal trip to The Range has many benefits without much risk of Covid spread.
