Just check my app exposure notifications

I followed some info I had seen on here and checked my phone settings for my app exposure notifications, just out of curiosity. However my app apparently hasn't checked for exposures since 24th Sept?!?! How has that happened?

Well judging by my results I must sleep walk or my phone has a life of it's own Confused

154 checks in the last 14 days but about 140 of those have been late at night, during the night or first thing in the morning before I've left the bed house

Also it often has up to 10 checks in a row at exactly the same time. Why would it do 8 checks at 04.07am for example??

dementedpixie · 02/11/2020 18:28

Because the checks are when someone inputs a positive result. Its not when you were in contact with someone

Whirlwind14 · 02/11/2020 21:13

I still don’t fully understand this, or my phone is playing up, so bang on every 4 hours, to the minute, someone I’ve been in contact with adds a positive result. So everyday I’m exposed to multiple cases?

I’m in an area with v low cases- somethings not right with the app...

Whirlwind14 · 02/11/2020 21:14

*or rather potentially exposed. Obviously not, as I don’t get a match. But still in a venue or space with multiple cases??

Flev · 02/11/2020 21:22

Mine hadn't checked since 23rd October, which is the last time I checked in anywhere, so the last time I opened the app. Just opened it and now its run a check. This is nuts...

Whirlwind14 · 02/11/2020 21:28

@Flev it’s crazy. I’ve not checked in with a QR code since 24th? I guess it also uses GPS?

Whatever is going on, there’s on way it’s accurate...

mrshoho · 02/11/2020 21:32

just looked and mine has 163 in the last 14 days. All random times day and night.

Hmmph · 02/11/2020 21:54

As I understand it, the keys are everyone who has tested positive and has the app. Every so often the app updates them all and runs a test with the randomly generated codes against those held on your phone. If any of the numbers match, then it checks to see how close you were and for how long.

I think the checks happen when your phone has a signal to be able to update and will do several checks at the same time if it didn’t connect properly the first time.

I couldn’t find a definitive answer to this anywhere though. It’s a bit niche and doesn’t really matter. If the app tells you you need to isolate, then you just need to do that for the time it tells you to.

Hmmph · 02/11/2020 21:57

Mine has checked 167 times in the last 14 days. I’m in a tier 1 area, but in contact with a lot of people. I have never seen a match though!

This I think agrees with what @Hmmph suggests - I have one "match" but haven't had a notification so presumably I can't have been near them for long enough.

I think this also clearly explains why my phone keeps going nuts - sometimes it just checks four or so times a day, others it checks 5-15 times all in the same minute.

Boxachocs · 02/11/2020 22:14

@Lumene my iPhone shows the same as yours, but I KNOW I’ve seen the list of exposures/checks somewhen on my phone after clicking on a notification. Does anyone know how to find the exposures on an iPhone?

Billi77 · 02/11/2020 22:42

World beating, isn’t it ?

Yellownotblue · 02/11/2020 23:06

Thanks OP, that’s interesting- I didn’t know I could check that.

Mine checks on average several times a day, but many of them are mere seconds apart (within the same minute). So for instance, on 31 October I got checked 15(!) times at 1am, and twice at 6am. Not a single time during day time.

Being the cynical sort, I wonder if the number of checks was amped up at month end, to meet some SLA metric ... 🤨

Lumene · 04/11/2020 17:40

Thanks @Boxachocs

RhythmoftheEgg · 04/11/2020 20:33

I've just been round in circles with this but do I understand correctly that:

  • the number of keys is the total number of people who have logged a positive test result since your app last ran a check?
  • the number of matches is where your app finds a match with a key stored on your phone (ie someone you've been in contact with)
  • a match will only trigger a notification if you were close enough for long enough?
Confused
Stylinson · 04/11/2020 21:19

Mine is showing 2 matched key counts every time it’s checked over the last 2 days. What does that even mean? Is it the same 2 or a different 2 every time. I’m so confused

Thanks for this. So 1 match means one of my contacts tested positive but I didn't go near them at the time?
doublemix · 04/11/2020 23:22

Some days I'm getting lots of matches e.g on the 31st I matched with 7. On the 1st when I was at work I matched with 6!! We have been told we must turn our Bluetooth off at work and this shows why so many matches but no exposure long enough to isolate as yet.

Osirus · 04/11/2020 23:36

Mine was 4 times today. About 20 on 29th October. It checks every day.

Binnie0309 · 05/11/2020 00:10

@Stylinson I'm so pleased you've said that, I thought I was the only one. Since I updated my iOS yesterday, I've had 1 matched key count on every check the phone has run, even when the checks are 8am, 12pm, 5pm, 4am etc, times when I know I've been at home (live alone). But no notifications to isolate. I don't understand it!

littlestpogo · 05/11/2020 07:12

Gosh I almost wished I hadn’t read this Wink.

So I checked this for the first time last night and ironically looking through all the notifications for the last 10 days had a match last night! I haven’t had any notification and just wondered is the notification instantaneous? Or could I still get one? And very dumb question does a notification just flash up on the app or something?

The thing I don’t understand is all the notifications that have no matches are still people
I’ve been near enough to link my key to theirs or is it totally random?

But the matched one is somehow a longer contact - but possibly not long enough for a notification?

Sorry have totally confused myself now!

thesurreyyouth · 06/11/2020 17:54

Looking at my exposures I had a key match on Sunday and received a notification last night informing me to isolate until 23.59 on Friday 13th. So does that mean it was last Friday that I was exposed to this person?

Lumene · 06/11/2020 19:59

Me too since Monday, bizarre!

Whirlwind14 · 06/11/2020 22:40

I’ve had continual matches since Wednesday too- on every check! Just the one. No notifications....
