I don’t know how to explain it properly but everyone posting on here on previous threads saying ‘#closetheschools’ who is an adult is posting from their home that they chose, in the life that they were able to create or themselves. You all had the freedom to do that, to be who you want to be, live how you want to live. You met your lifelong friends, met your partners, fell in love, studied, picked careers, whatever.
Some are some are not, some are hanging on to their homes, jobs, mental health bybtheir finger tips.
When you argue to close the universities and schools, what you have to see is that you are asking to take that away from us. These are our developmental years and we’re not going to get the chance to make anything of our lives !!!
The argument made by those is to go to online learning, to refuce tge period of hard lockdown and to reduce the negative impact on the whole country. You can still do your degrees, blended and online learning still take place. Not as good as contact but for uni it actually makes little difference. If you mean the social life of uni, seperate from learning, unfortunately like everyone else in the country that has to go virtual, it won't be forever and it will be hard for many in all age groups.
Forced isolation at 18, in your parents house is different to forced isolation at 45 surrounded by your family, in your home (I’m aware not all adults have this, but the vast vast majority of Mumsnetters do)
Massive assumption, I think for those who struggle with lockdown it is hard regardless of age.
Working from home is different to studying from home, because at work, you’re goal is to do that work and if you can get that task done from home then so be it, you’ll still get your wage. But studying online when your chance at a future is being taken away is a pointless exercise, and it’s depressing.
Dramatic, sorry but it is. Many eople have studies online, open university, lack odf money to be able to travel to uni for every lecture, having to work restricting how often you can get to uni. Teaching online isn't easy either but to be honest in a few years many uni courses/classes will be online. Be grateful we are no longer on dial up whilst trying to access your uni stuff.
I don’t know how anyone can expect this of us ?? You ALL got your youths. You ALL got your childhoods. You ALL got your twenties.
And you get yours, very different to those we have had and those of other generations. It will not be forever and everyone is going through the same thing. You are in fact lucky, by doing a nursing degree you get to go to placement, sign on the bank, plenty of work. You will see firat hand how the virus impacts all generations and causes loss for all. My sister, who is a nurae, has never forgotten her first covid patient, even now, hunderds later she can recall this lonely isolated person with a single amall suitcase. They never made it home or had company.
Don’t ask this of us, please. We can’t take it.
Okay, ypu can carry on as normal, however you cannot ask other people in the country to risk others so that you can carry on a as normal. So businesses run by or employing non 3-30 year olds are out, hospitals are out, your nursing degree would have to be put on hold you would be too high risk. Is that the freedom you want? Uni lecturs wiuld still be online as most of your lecturers are over 30, but you can have mass gatherings but what would you do?
This situation is shit for everyone, some more than others. But this is the only plan in pkace for just now and until someone comes with a more workable solution this is it. At present schools and uni are open, as before. More stringent meansures may be put in place to reduce the sprrad but I hope they won't close for selfish non selfish reasons. You most certainly have a right to an opinion, and people have a right to challenge that opinion. For now, keep going, this won't be forever and you will get to experience all the things you are missing out on just now.
