How can anyone say schools/ unis should shut ???

I don’t know how to explain it properly but everyone posting on here on previous threads saying ‘#closetheschools’ who is an adult is posting from their home that they chose, in the life that they were able to create or themselves. You all had the freedom to do that, to be who you want to be, live how you want to live. You met your lifelong friends, met your partners, fell in love, studied, picked careers, whatever.

When you argue to close the universities and schools, what you have to see is that you are asking to take that away from us. These are our developmental years and we’re not going to get the chance to make anything of our lives !!!

Forced isolation at 18, in your parents house is different to forced isolation at 45 surrounded by your family, in your home (I’m aware not all adults have this, but the vast vast majority of Mumsnetters do) Working from home is different to studying from home, because at work, you’re goal is to do that work and if you can get that task done from home then so be it, you’ll still get your wage. But studying online when your chance at a future is being taken away is a pointless exercise, and it’s depressing.

I don’t know how anyone can expect this of us ?? You ALL got your youths. You ALL got your childhoods. You ALL got your twenties.

Don’t ask this of us, please. We can’t take it.

@MonkeyBidness

Only the very young think of university and school as their most important “developmental” years. I know I did. Now I’m older I know they weren’t.

It’s not that bad. You have to stay at home. It sucks. But you are unlikely to have to bear the responsibility of children and home ownership. you’re not down a mine. Or in the trenches. It’s sucks. But really, that’s all. It just sucks.

This !
Northernsoulgirl45 · 01/11/2020 18:03

@PlanDeRaccordement no social distancing in schools amonst students. Well certailly not in my kids school.

Popcornriver · 01/11/2020 18:03

Well lots of people disagree with you OP. There's a petition to close schools already at 120000 signatures.

lu00 · 01/11/2020 18:04

@SleepingStandingUp

Most Mumsnet posters got their teenage years/ youth Over dramatic much? Were talking about 5 months over Spring / Summer when you were allowed out to see friends, go to the pubs etc at the end and a couple of months now. Hardly stealing your entire blood youth is it.

Its not a couple of months to a year. current estimates say this will last for 5 years but no one saying close schools is suggesting doing it for 5 years. They're talking about going hard and heavy now to reduce rates so we won't still be farting about in 5 years. Literally no one thinks young people should be locked away for 5 years. That would be the elderly and vulnerable people advocate would just stay in until it's safe

I never said I want to have fun, sex or travel in lockdown. I said I want my education you were going on about the life experiences we all got at 18, not just your education.

do you think I don’t think it’s bad ? I agree ! It’s all so so shitty, do I think it’s necessary for me to not get my education because of this ? In my opinion, no I think you think none of it is as important as what is happening to you and that you're age should somehow not have to make any SHORT TERM sacrifices. You can still get an education because no one advocating closing education is suggesting suspending it

No, i repeatedly referred back in every paragraph about how my post was about not closing schools. I even titled in about not closing schools, it couldn’t have been clearer

You have to choose between education and some kind of job prospects and those "life experiences" that you view so romantically. Which is more important to you?

Also if the life experiences are such a worry, how bad do you think that people worry that are now losing their jobs and probably their homes?

Not everyone had such a lovely youth. I spent my teens looking after a very sick mum and at 18 I had to fend for myself and get a job. I'm not exactly the only one either. Going to uni and having the time to have fun is a massive privilege, not a right.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 01/11/2020 18:05

@lu00

And I mentioned all the fun, meeting a partner etc that everyone else got to do, but I never said that’s what I wanted in lockdown I specifically said I wanted schools and unis kept open

Not really. As I said, try reading your post again. Very little about education. Virtually nothing in fact. All about 'LOST opportunities' & bemoaning missing out on 'life opportunities'

I don’t know how anyone can expect this of us ?? You ALL got your youths. You ALL got your childhoods. You ALL got your twenties.

Everyone's allowed to dream. Not just 18 year olds. You're being selfish in thinking that others should die so you can follow your dreams.

DenimDrift · 01/11/2020 18:05

oh lord, the drama!! op, your uni is open, whats the issue here?

if schools/uni's close its because they have to

I know lots disagree. I’m not going to change what I believe just because some people signed a petition though

People are arguing to shut schools and universities for your future.

In the hope to get this over and done with quicker. Not drag it out with ineffective lockdown cycles which could drag on for years. There won’t be a viable economic or jobs if this carries on. you will be paying for this for the next 40 years and I don’t want that for you or my 19yo Dd. Who yes, is devastated to be learning at home with no face to face lectures.

DenimDrift · 01/11/2020 18:07

other generations have suffered, education with it!

miners strikes disrupted exams and education
2 world wars
troubles in Ireland

Theres more...you are being overly dramatic. Don't you have any uni work to be catching up on?

What makes you think I don’t have worries too.

I cared for my schizophrenic mum and suicidal brother all through lockdown, and before. I looked after the house and then and worried about every bill instead of mum.

Now I go to uni and study nursing, which I fund entirely myself since I’ve worked since I was 14. I have to worry about my job and my rent too.

People think students have it SO easy and never have to worry about a thing but some of us do.

OP, well done for defending your views. You have my sympathy and understanding. I am sure you see how short-sighted it is to deny the importance of education. All of us need an educated future adult workforce if essential services are to continue. More Cake for you.

And yet... even through all of that - exams were never cancelled.

And no I don’t have anything to catch up on, I’m a really organised person so am completely up to date ☺️

OP I just read your post at 18.09. You are clearly a fighter and (with or without cake) I am sure you will earn a great future.

Popcornriver · 01/11/2020 18:12

It's not like I want them to close either OP. I don't! I just don't know what the answer is. Look at the mumsnet responses when additional safety measures are suggested. Apparently masks, blended learning and social distancing is a no go. What will happen if hospitals become overwhelmed to the point where people aren't able to access urgent medical care. It's no longer just those who've had their childhoods at risk anymore. If it's a choice of losing access to A&E or missing a month of school I'd keep them home even though I'd prefer not to.

BoggledBudgie · 01/11/2020 18:12

Oh bore off. I’m a full time college student who’s not stepped foot on campus this academic year. Perfectly feasible to learn from home as well as make friends with other classmates.

@JacobReesMogadishu

Nothing is going to get this over and done with quicker because there is no vaccine!!!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 01/11/2020 18:12

@lu00

No, i repeatedly referred back in every paragraph about how my post was about not closing schools. I even titled in about not closing schools, it couldn’t have been clearer

Well actually you could have been much clearer. As I have now suggested three times. READ YOUR OWN POST it's all about your 'lost youth' Yes, 'not closing schools & universities' is mentioned, but ALL in relation to the experiences you feel you are owed as an 18 yo.

greenlynx · 01/11/2020 18:13

I don’t want schools to close down again, my DD is in year 11 so it’s very important year for her.

However the figures are rising and the longer we are hesitating the bigger they are. We are facing these 4 weeks now just because we didn’t want to have 2 weeks in October around half term. And by the way, we had such a long lockdown in spring just because we were waiting for too long. It’s not about older people taking away young people’s freedoms, it’s just a question of simple maths: how rates of infection are growing, how quickly the hospital beds are filling, and how soon everyone will not be able to get ANY medical help irrespective of their age.

I’m all for opening all businesses but it means that measures have to be tough but timely and brief. If measures are not timely and not tough enough they take longer to work.

whatisgoingtohappen · 01/11/2020 18:14

I work in an admin job in a secondary school and at last count 6 adults have had (or still have) corona, as well as a number of students.

If schools close - temporarily - it will be because people are at risk of being seriously ill or dying. Or because so many members of staff are self-isolating that it won’t be viable to keep them open. In either case it won’t be personal.

Which is not to say that the pandemic isn’t awful, and that we don’t have an incompetent government that could have handled things better for all of us, because it is and we do.

Well then we shouldn’t have this stupid half hearted measure.
Which will do fuck all.

Either shut everything or let the virus rip through and pile the bodies up.

To be honest I couldn’t give a shit which of those two options we go for. Either would be better than dithering about in the middle.

whatisgoingtohappen · 01/11/2020 18:15

(That’s the number of people with covid this term so far is what I meant.)

Grapewrath · 01/11/2020 18:16

Oh my goodness drama the house down. People are asking for a short lockdown to include everyone. Hardly stealing anyone’s youth.
I am the parent of three teens btw so I’m not unaware of the challenge

YET

& track & trace will work MUCH better if the numbers are much lower.

It's not rocket science ffs.

sobsanta · 01/11/2020 18:18

If you get a lecture you don't understand, email your lecturer. That's what they're there for. I'm currently doing postgrad entirely online because of Covid. Is it the best? No. Is it fine, yes.
