What will lockdown mean for your job?

Magicra84 · 01/11/2020 11:13

In the last lockdown I lost everything. I was made redundant at work and lost my house because my landlord was selling due to financial difficulties brought on by lockdown.

I've managed to build myself back up just about. I have a new job that I've been with a month and a house that I'm starting to make feel like home. Now lockdown looms again. I don't know what's in store for my role til I go in tomorrow but hopefully it'll be safe.

Non essential retail, really panicking

FeedTheVoodooLilyMumsnet · 01/11/2020 17:00

Hi all

We're just moving this over to our coronavirus topic. Flowers

VeggieSausageRoll · 01/11/2020 17:01

Fortunately (but sadly) my job will be very safe - third sector mental health services

cptartapp · 01/11/2020 17:02

Practice nurse.
Have been seeing and treating patients all through this for most things since March, so no change. Patients are now more keen to be seen though. Appointment waits are getting longer and longer due to social distancing and required cleaning.
A couple of staff have had enough and eyeing up early retirement which may make things more difficult.

Miseryl · 01/11/2020 17:08

No change for us (both Prison Service).

everybodyknowsus · 01/11/2020 17:20

I work in a school and DP is a police officer so thankfully no change for either of us.

elmfield4 · 01/11/2020 17:25

I'm a hairdresser and it's a family business so I will be back on furlough! We are in a fortunate position as we own the building and no mortgage but feel so sad that we aren't allowed to work again with all the effects with put in. My OH works in a big pharmaceutical company so his job is more than safe at the moment.

elmfield4 · 01/11/2020 17:27

*efforts we've put in

Youngatheart00 · 01/11/2020 17:27

Lockdown will mean a continuation of working from home and the tedium of a diary packed full of Zoom and Teams meetings and zero human contact.

Yes, I’m lucky to have a job but also concerned about job security and the isolation is crushing

RandallBoggs · 01/11/2020 17:28

I wfh teaching ESOL adults. I suppose if their businesses have a bad time of if they won’t renew our contracts. Luckily I teach people from all over so hopefully it isn’t too affected.

cliffdiver · 01/11/2020 17:29

No change for me (teacher) or DH (private medical insurance).

lissie123 · 01/11/2020 17:30

Dealing a COVID strategy response for major retailer. Another headache for Monday morning. Sigh.

lissie123 · 01/11/2020 17:30

With!

lorelgil · 01/11/2020 17:30

Luckily me and my DH both work in schools so no change for us thankfully. Although he is WFH at the moment due to self isolating.

Metabigot · 01/11/2020 17:31

I've already been made redundant at the end of furlough, now that furlough has been extended a month I will probably not have to work my notice at least.

I've actually got an interview to do some temp project work with the covid labs so I guess they'll be busy!

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/11/2020 17:34

Work for an environmental charity. Some areas of my work will disappear during lockdown, others will be unaffected. If the spring is anything to go by the footfall on our sites will go up and so will litter, petty vandalism and various other people-related problems, so I'll be spending more time sorting those.

MarcelineMissouri · 01/11/2020 17:34

No change for me as I work pt in a school. Dh works for a cinema chain, he’s had his pay cut since the summer and no end in sight to that. The chain can stay afloat for now (and are in fact better off being forced to close for a while then struggling on staying open) but realistically if things don’t pick up in the new year.... And while my job is reasonably secure I earn less than 10% of dh salary so if his job goes we’re screwed. I can’t wait to wake up one day and not have a sinking feeling of dread.

SamsMumsCateracts · 01/11/2020 17:36

Nursery nurse - no difference for me, still risking my and my vulnerable family's lives for minimum wage and no sick pay.

FizzyPink · 01/11/2020 17:50

I’ve been wfh since March so nothing will change for me.
DP is an elite tennis coach and he’s still waiting on a decision from the LTA to see if he can do outdoor 121 lessons although suspect the answer will be no.

We were hoping to buy a house very soon (which probably won’t happen for a while now due to the difficulty in getting a mortgage while self-employed at the moment) so have lots of savings to fall back plus I’m a high earner so we have no money worries.

I fully appreciate how incredibly lucky we are

OddBoots · 01/11/2020 17:51

All I know at the moment is that I will be in work tomorrow getting lots of calls from anxious people wanting to know if/how things will change and I will have to tell them all that we don't know yet. I'll be juggling those calls with the day to day client facing work as it will still be a normal working day until whatever happens, happens. I will need full swan mode.

PollyPelargonium52 · 01/11/2020 17:58

Self-employed currently getting less work but at least still up and running.

userxx · 01/11/2020 20:17

@MyLifeWTF, I hear you!! I bet you're exhausted. Your colleague can come back in to give you guys a break, as long as there is work for them to do.

whatisforteamum · 01/11/2020 21:10

Chef here so just as we were getting busy again.Boom! Our company has sent emails regarding possible redundancies before this a latest announcement.I feel !more like it will be the London branches with so many wfh.
Luckily my mortgage is paid.

21833efb · 01/11/2020 21:13

Was due to start a much needed and wanted job this week, but lockdown means I can't as it's one of the industries which is deemed as non-essential. So sad and disappointed Sad

So will be starting to look for work again Sad

QueenZoopla · 01/11/2020 21:13

Fingers crossed for you, OP 🤞🤞
