What will lockdown mean for your job?

Magicra84 · 01/11/2020 11:13

In the last lockdown I lost everything. I was made redundant at work and lost my house because my landlord was selling due to financial difficulties brought on by lockdown.

I've managed to build myself back up just about. I have a new job that I've been with a month and a house that I'm starting to make feel like home. Now lockdown looms again. I don't know what's in store for my role til I go in tomorrow but hopefully it'll be safe.

No change for me although my workload may drop a little....
I really feel for people who work in hospitality, retail etc....

My business is closed (leisure). Back on furlough.

Apparently there is enough cash in the business for it to last until April, but if it isn’t making money at that point I’ll be fairly fucked.

I’m just glad the kids are at school because I 100% could not cope with another full lockdown like last time, if I had to go bask to the stepford wife routine of home schooling and baking I’d go round the fucking twist!

Longdistance · 01/11/2020 11:58

Not much change for myself and dh. Education and the construction industry.

amusedbush · 01/11/2020 11:59

I'm a full-time PhD student. I'm able to do all of my research at home (I'm not at the data collection stage yet, thankfully) and my thesis supervisor has told me that everything is fine, my funding is secure and I'm not to even think about going on to campus until the spring. Basically I'm going to be in my home office all winter, which kind of suits me because I won't be hobbling over icy pavements to scrape my car in the pitch black.

I'm also teaching an undergraduate class but it's fully online via Zoom so no change there.

lljkk · 01/11/2020 12:04

Dunno. Hours will probably stay reduced from main job & will keep asking around about other work. Don't expect to lose all hours but wouldn't bet on anything right now.

Talia99 · 01/11/2020 12:08

We never went back to the office after the last lockdown so no real change. I know I’m one of the lucky ones.

Parky04 · 01/11/2020 12:09

I was made redundant last week. My DW and DS will now be on furlough (again!).

Funkypolar · 01/11/2020 12:23

Civil service, on long term sick leave but would have been WFH. My department is making redundancies though. DH is military.

We live in married quarters and rent out other properties so not worried about finances but don’t know if I’ll have a job after maternity leave. I think they’ll be huge civil service job cuts, possibly military job cuts in the upcoming austerity.

ScrumptiousBears · 01/11/2020 12:31

I WFH since March so no change. DP will still go to work (emergency services) kids will still go to school.

Kids swimming, football and gymnastics will stop so back to crafts and stuff I suppose. Shame we don't have the good weather this time.

DryRoastPeanut · 01/11/2020 12:41

I work in theatre. I’ve not been at work since early March. This second lockdown really hasn’t changed much, apart from I booked tickets to the Van Gogh exhibition for this month, and now I’m going to miss that.

I’m just grateful my husband is wfh and fully able to support us. My heart breaks thinking if the families with no income, mortgage arrears, empty cupboards and a bleak Christmas etc.

Squirrelblanket · 01/11/2020 12:43

I work in medical education so no change for me. I've been busier than ever and WFH since March which I love.

However my husband works in the health and fitness industry which is already on it's knees so we are worried about that.

Oysterbabe · 01/11/2020 12:44

It won't make any difference to me. I'm permanently WFH now.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 01/11/2020 12:45

I work for the nhs so my job is safe, my stress levels however are through the roof

unmarkedbythat · 01/11/2020 12:46

Nothing, I work at site throughout. DH has already lost his so things are tight, very bloody tight, but doable. But so many of my friends are now fucked. I watched the slides last night and can't see how the government can avoid this lockdown but oh god, so many people are facing ruin.

ToffeePennie · 01/11/2020 12:46

My first business is closing down because of the first lockdown. My second business I had just got it started again and now I’m looking at being out of work for at least four weeks. Because of my employment status, I’m not entitled to ANY help. Myself, my husband and my kids will have to struggle on His wages this month which do not cover our mortgage, gas, water, electricity and food bills.

Poshjock · 01/11/2020 12:47

Civilian support to military. No change here. At work and always have been. Biggest challenge is managing people movement and expectations due to Covid. Keeping the workplace “safe” in on operational environment. DH can’t work due to ill health. He’s stuck at home without access to his support network, hobbies or friends.

bagpuss90 · 01/11/2020 14:45

I’m self employed and was just starting to get back on my feet. This will spell disaster . I’m so fed up and worried - it’s not true

LindaEllen · 01/11/2020 14:47

Lockdown and the restrictions surrounding it means that there is little to no demand for the services I previously provided as a freelancer. I work for a number of clients, who have seen their own demand drop massively, so obviously they're not going to be hiring me. I am eligible for the self employed grant but even cutting down to 80% of what I'd normally earn was tough, I can't imagine what I'm going to do now it's going down even further.

I've been relying on savings to see me through - and thank god I had plenty, as I've always been quite good with money.

It's not enough to see me through this next lockdown, though, and after a decade of working my arse off to build up this business, I think I'm going to have to call it a day .. because I cannot afford to wait for things to get better anymore.

Devilesko · 01/11/2020 14:48

I've still lost it, no change.

vanillandhoney · 01/11/2020 14:49

I can work as normal (dog walker) but I suspect I won't be very busy as lots of my clients work in non-essential retail or hospitality. However I do work for some vulnerable clients and will continue as usual for anyone who needs me!

Luckily DH works construction and has worked constantly since March. He earns very well so we have no financial concerns even if my income takes a big hit.

catgirl1976 · 01/11/2020 14:49

No change for me as I work I education and even though I’m in business support (HR) not teaching the new guidance says we stiall
Have to go in to work. I’m working a mix of wfh and on site which I assume will
Continue. I would far prefer to be fully wfh though but appreciate I’m very lucky compared to those who will lose jobs or frontline staff who are at more risk.

MyChemicalMummy · 01/11/2020 14:52

I work in a jewellers so we will be closed again fron Thursday, I will be back on furlough, I've only been back for a week!

teenagetantrums · 01/11/2020 14:58
