What will lockdown mean for your job?

Magicra84 · 01/11/2020 11:13

In the last lockdown I lost everything. I was made redundant at work and lost my house because my landlord was selling due to financial difficulties brought on by lockdown.

I've managed to build myself back up just about. I have a new job that I've been with a month and a house that I'm starting to make feel like home. Now lockdown looms again. I don't know what's in store for my role til I go in tomorrow but hopefully it'll be safe.

No change in my family at all. We all worked throughout the last one, and will this one too. Except my sister, she's a primary teacher and was furloughed the last time. I guess she'll be working this one.

I work for a national charity, my actual workload lessened slightly last time round. I'll be helping whoever needs help again.

bagpuss90 · 01/11/2020 15:05

LindaEllen - I feel for you . I’m pretty much in the same boat

NewYearmorestress · 01/11/2020 15:05

Dunno. On fixed term contract so fairly easy to get rid of if needed.

Cbeebiesismyworld · 01/11/2020 15:08

I’m a nurse so no change, other than being super busy!

NetflixWatcher · 01/11/2020 15:09

No change for me. Same old. Plodding on.

Peace43 · 01/11/2020 15:12

Nothing. I worked from home for years before Covid. The last lockdown was hard because my dd wasn’t in school. My shopping gets delivered weekly anyway. It’s only my leisure activities and those of my daughter that suffer. I like to take the campervan to beauty spots and walk, she likes swimming with her friends - neither allowed during lock down. As a single parent I am bubbled with my boyfriend so there will be more stay home stuff for a month and fewer days out 😟

Rowgtfc72 · 01/11/2020 15:13

No change. I work in food manufacturing so I guess we might be busier.
Just done 3 weeks self isolating as dd passed covid to me so looking forward to actually having money in my account. I'm paid pennies above minimum wage so not entitled to the covid payment.
Dh in the same job and position.

ExcavatorHater · 01/11/2020 15:15

I wfh anyway so no change for me. But i only do part time to earn money for extras for us.

DP was made redundant during the last lockdown he worked in construction. He's started a new job in health and safety and will work throughout the next lockdown. I am hoping this new job is safe, but who really knows!

TheGreatWave · 01/11/2020 15:19

Probably be back WFH, though the boss won't like it.

I can't do a core element of job (whether home or office) so will have to plan other tasks. If I am at home I will be stealing dd's desk and a monitor from work.

Job is as safe as any job can be.

RoseyLentil · 01/11/2020 15:22

Last lockdown I worked from home, was then put on furlough and then lost my job in the private sector . Am now in the Public Sector in a frontline role, in the same industry sector, so my job is secure and I'm enjoying work life much more.

MyLifeWTF · 01/11/2020 16:16

I'm assuming no change for me as I worked all through the last lockdown but does anyone know what happens with the people that was coming back into the office Monday after furlough, do you think they will stay on furlough or be allowed back?

Kissthepastrychef · 01/11/2020 16:25

Both police. Business as usual for us

FredaFox · 01/11/2020 16:29

@MyLifeWTF I wondered that as the scheme they brought in to replace furlough wasn’t as good and people only got 67% of their wages but looks like furlough is now being extended

What will lockdown mean for your job?
userxx · 01/11/2020 16:32

@MyLifeWTF A new furlough scheme was kicking in on 1st November, I spent all of last week working out calculations based on the new scheme. What a massive waste of time!!

JufusMum · 01/11/2020 16:34

Work in NHS admin in children and adolescent mental health, no change except we will no doubt get busier and busier

OrtamLeevz · 01/11/2020 16:34

Nothing, I work in an office on my own so I will just carry on.

Our firm supplies safety equipment (inc PPE) to the engineering industry and since they want businesses to carry on, then I suspect that the majority of our customers will continue working. Most firms have got social distancing sorted now, so I reckon they won't have to close again.

Flushi · 01/11/2020 16:37

There shouldn’t be much change for me, and I feel very lucky

GlowingOrb · 01/11/2020 16:38

We may continue to face slow downs in getting contracts signed and getting key information transferred, but we’ve mostly adapted to that at this point. Our company is still wfh with no plans to return so lockdown doesn’t change anything.

ferretface · 01/11/2020 16:40

In my main job (NHS but not frontline) we will just get busier. I am tired and not looking forward to the added complexity of potential impacts of EU exit.

My husband and I also have a part time holiday rental type business - losing 3.5k of bookings from that in November alone. We clawed quite a bit back over the summer as it was busy but estimate we've lost about 6k of bookings across the two lockdowns.

I worry the most for my friends in travel and leisure (holiday companies, gyms, arts etc). It feels like there hasn't necessarily been much support for these sectors and it really isn't clear when they'll be able to operate again.

islockdownoveryet · 01/11/2020 16:41

I'm sorry op , it's really tough for those that work in industry's that have to close especially hospitality.
Shops a lot will be able to carry on with the online shopping so there is hope a lot will have a job or a job to go back to but hospitality the run up to Christmas I'm worried. I escaped redundancy last time so probably won't this time but I expect it'll be the new year when redundancy looms .
I suppose we are back taking each day as it comes and hope there is light at the end of all this .

MyLifeWTF · 01/11/2020 16:43

@FredaFox @userxx

I understand furlough has been extended there just isn't much clarity around individual circumstances is there?
One of my colleagues was due back tomorrow so should I just assume she will be extended?

It's such a rubbish time and everyone has been affected and I have been so lucky to have not been furloughed but it also makes me feel like I'm not looking forward to work now because as hard as it's been for people who were furloughed it's also been tough on us that havent because we have picked up the workload.

Me and my manager were looking forward to having someone back and bring that much needed uplift but now it looks like we will just be pushing on again just us. It's tough all round.

NatMoz · 01/11/2020 16:45

I've been WFH since March so no change but we're so short staffed I'm working overtime on Saturdays and we're recruiting at the moment!

Husband's job busy too.

Very grateful financially we'll be ok.

Ohtannenbaumohtannenbaum · 01/11/2020 16:48

I really hope you get positive news when you go into work tomorrow OP!

We haven't been affected financially luckily, we both work in jobs that haven't suffered so have continued to work full time the whole way through.

MorganKitten · 01/11/2020 16:54

Childcare but we’re all being made redundant anyway

Greenhairbrush · 01/11/2020 16:58

Self employed in a job that will have to shut this week, luckily?! I’m just about to leave for 3 months maternity leave. Just hoping I have a job to return to in February.
