I know they will be open, but I am curious to see if parents will feel they will be safer at home.

Yes. I genuinely believe more time off school will be worse for them in the long run. I think for the nation closing schools would probably be better in terms of getting Covid numbers down but my own kids (as with many others) need regular schooling, they can't just pick up where they left off after a massive absence. They also benefit hugely from socialising with kids their own age and really missed it during the first lockdown. I think the effects of sustained time out of education alongside lack of opportunities for social interaction and the worry they already have about Covid present a far greater risk in an individual level to my kids than the possibility of them catching Covid.

Beebityboo · 31/10/2020 20:54

I don't really have much of a choice, do I? They've not stopped fines or threats of prosecution and as I can't home ed all three I have no choice, even though I'm disabled.
Tbh I'm terrified and haven't stopped crying all day. As it is we may have to deregister my eldest DD. It's a nightmare Sad.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 31/10/2020 20:55

@CeramicGuineaPig

Of course. Year 6 and Year 8. DS 2 supposed to be doing 11 plus next Sat, don’t know what will happen here, assume it will be going ahead.
My eldest is too Ceramic. She's just said she hopes it still happens as she wants it over with now.

Peacock, yes all 5 of mine will still be going to school, nursery in the case of my youngest.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 31/10/2020 20:55

Yes. Year 9 and 11. They've both missed over a week's we were self isolating and I've had letters threatening the ewo.

Char2015 · 31/10/2020 20:55

No.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 31/10/2020 20:56

If I was given the option I would say no. But since we face fines etc for not sending them in he will be going (for now)

I believe parents should have the choice and I was hoping that would be announced tonight.

Yes the risk to children from the virus is low. But the risk to their mental health of bringing the virus home and passing it to a vulnerable parent who then dies. That's potentially catastrophic

yeOldeTrout · 31/10/2020 20:56

Yes. Secondary & college. Adult DC are on training/Uni courses, too.

movehimintothesun · 31/10/2020 20:57

Yes, with no hesitation.

bettybyebye · 31/10/2020 20:58

Yes of course. They were both utterly miserable when schools closed last time

Rabbitholebonkers · 31/10/2020 20:59

That will be a hell yeah!!

MajesticWhine · 31/10/2020 20:59

Yes

EWO for a week self isolating?
Thedogshow · 31/10/2020 21:01

Yes

itchyfinger · 31/10/2020 21:02

Yes. I need to work. Plus I just dont believe the virus is as bigger risk as we were initially told.

olivesonapizza · 31/10/2020 21:03

Agree the safety of them if not vulnerable is probably negligible between school and home but most are worried about the children spreading it to the wider family who could be vulnerable

I get this (although not relevant to me) but there do still seem to be a lot of people who are genuinely worried about their children catching it, even if they're not vulnerable. And that's how I read the OP, although perhaps that's not how she meant it to come across.

Maryann1975 · 31/10/2020 21:05

Yes, I will. Year 10, 8 and 5. Their mental health was through the floor last time, I will only not send them if they have to isolate or school closes (and then I will be pushing for key worker spaces for year 5 and year 8).
We wont be doing anything else except work and school. Shopping is delivered, odd takeaway. Not seeing friends or family outside school/work. No other. Clubs/sports groups. It’s literally get up, school/work, home, bed.

Remmy123 · 31/10/2020 21:06

Why wouldn't you??

Mumofsend · 31/10/2020 21:06

Mine is year 1. I'm half expecting her to be risk assessed out next week when school goes back. I got told quite bluntly on Friday before half term "DD is the reason I can't send my staff home with a safe covid risk assessment" by the head. He made it painfully clear he doesn't want her there during the pandemic at the moment.

peacockfeather11 · 31/10/2020 21:06

@OutComeTheWolves exactly my sentiments. My DD loves being back at school and there have been no cases in her school. Last time in March I did take her out early but this time I am grateful they are staying open.

Yes, all the young adults I know who have had Covid have had mild infection or tested positive while being asymptotic ( and one of them has high risk underlying heart condition) so it really is ultra low risk.
DS16 has a major meltdown last week which for a boy who is usually so laid back he’s horizontal I am seriously worried about his mental health.
It really isn’t fair to expect them to isolate from their ‘pack’ for such a long time. Having seen the behaviour of the vulnerable age groups in our area I wouldn’t blame the young for rebelling. I work in healthcare and the entitledness of the over 65s is incredible. They expect everyone else to stay in so they can go out!

DianaT1969 · 31/10/2020 21:07

OP why do you think it is more dangerous to go to school during lockdown??

toptreeroots1 · 31/10/2020 21:08

Yes absolutely
Year reception and she will be there all whilst she can be

Ignoringequally · 31/10/2020 21:10

As long as schools are open my children will be there.

peacockfeather11 · 31/10/2020 21:12

@DianaT1969 I don't necessarily think it's more dangerous but more people are getting it. I will be sending my DD in.
