If it's OK for teachers to have to carry on working....

If it's OK for teachers to have to carry on working, why isn't it OK for MPs to go back to Parliament and work no PPE and no social distancing? These MPs know how dangerous it is out there and there's no way they'll put themselves in danger, but they're quite happy to throw teachers under the bus. And by the way, I'm not a teacher, I'm an appalled parent.

My school asks for masks to be worn on corridors by staff and students. This means that I now spend great swathes of my time saying "put on your mask, no, not on your chin, cover your nose with it, don't throw your mask around etc etc etc". See the difference between kids and adults??

RubyViolet · 31/10/2020 23:13

Tory BOTs out doing their thing again on this forum.

caringcarer · 31/10/2020 23:14

In my sons school everyone has to wear a mask in corridors, which are now one way, including teachers. They can take off in classroom once seated, if they want to. My son says a few children choose to wear them all day. Each form now has its own toilet and only.one child allowed to go at once. Parents must wear a.madk when dropping off and collecting and stand 2m apart. Teachers are all wearing masks and visors outside of school. This is a special secondary school and all children seem to be compliant. My son says no one can go into.school without a mask. If a child forgets one they are given a paper one and patents charged for it. Only one child in Sixth Form has had Covid and not any of the teachers. This school is very careful. All schools should be careful.

Cloudburstagain · 31/10/2020 23:15

It would help if parents a students actually followed the rules. If they self-isolated when they were told to.

For many medical appointments the staff wear PPE, have screens. To have a planned but needed surgery patients self-isolate before it, have to prove a negative C19 test.

In school no temperature checks, yet I need one for a 2 min flu jab!

WhereIsMyMojoGone · 31/10/2020 23:15

In my son's secondary school, the teachers don't wear masks in class but keep their distance apparently. Everyone wears masks in corridors. The students have to sanitize the tables and chairs before they leave the classroom. They also have the doors to outside open and all the windows open in the classroom. They have asked us to make sure the kids are wearing thermals over the winter!

Talking to my colleagues in several schools, vulnerable teachers/staff are staying at home.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 31/10/2020 23:16

@DianaT1969

Can MPs work from home? Yes. Can teachers work from home? Not unless school goes 100% online. Can bus drivers work from home? No. Can supermarket staff work from home? No. Can delivery drivers work from home? No. See where I'm going with this OP? Lots of people work among the general public without PPE.
Not sure what point you think you are making but you've missed it spectacularly.

All our delivery drivers wear masks as do bus drivers in this area. As do supermarket staff. Everyone you mention can wear PPE.

You made the case for teachers. Not sure that's what you meant to do but thanks.

echt · 31/10/2020 23:17

It's shocking that individual schools can set rules on what staff can do. All that crap about interfering with teaching and learning - based on what longitudinal study? The government's ruling is all about keeping the myth going that schools are Covid-safe.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 31/10/2020 23:17

But that is the DfE guidance unless you are tier 3.

Then this is the problem. The R number is going up fast in all regions and when you look at the graphs the 15-25 age group are catching it faster than anyone else.

WhereIsMyMojoGone · 31/10/2020 23:18

The school has praised all the students for being so compliant and, fingers crossed, no one has had COVID in the school.

callistography · 31/10/2020 23:19

@IloveJKRowling
I'd love to know what they based all this on. The current governmental guidance for schools is shocking. You should go and read it. Teachers are being thrown under a bus as they are specifically advised not to wear masks. Even clinically vulnerable ones. Lots are wearing visits but they do not protect well on their own.
I honestly don't think most people

outside of the teaching profession really seem to understand exactly what's going on. And most people would not tolerate the working conditions we're being subjected to if they were forced on them.

WhyNotMe40 · 31/10/2020 23:19

Vulnerable teachers stay home?! Blimey - what school is that? That's unheard of!

Fizzydrinks123 · 31/10/2020 23:19

Goodness - the weakest of the weak - if someone disagrees they are a >>>>insert own prejudice>>>> BOT. boring and do grow up, we all think for ourselves and if someone disagrees with you they are not some "plant/bot/evil person". The world is larger than your very own experience/circle of acquaintances.

user1471530109 · 31/10/2020 23:20

Fellow colleagues? Do you think this is the general opinion of the public? Do they really not know about what is facing teachers and kids every day? Is it a case of 'dont give a shit because said kid is out of the house and at school?'. Because that isn't the way I believed parents to be in the last 20 years of teaching. I'm holding onto the fact this is a load of goady cunts. I also hope to god the so called colleagues on here throwing their older and more vulnerable colleagues under the bus, are also trolls. Because quite frankly, you are unworthy of teaching children empathy.Thankfully, I haven't come across anyone like this in real life or they hide their views well.

Kids in school. With masks. Preferably blended so they can all.socially distance. We have prepared for this with hours of extra training.

CountreeGurl · 31/10/2020 23:22

But teaching is essential...

WhyNotMe40 · 31/10/2020 23:22

So are teachers

Valenciaoranges · 31/10/2020 23:23

We can wear masks and have been provided with visors/screens around our desk, hand sanitiser etc - large private school. Why can’t all schools do the same? Why haven’t govt provided funding for such equipment?
I keep the windows open all the time. The room is very small - no social distancing.

WhyNotMe40 · 31/10/2020 23:25

Because the government expressly forbade schools to do so.

I don't understand why people have such a problem with teachers asking for the same things everyone else expects in their working lives at the moment. Everyone who can to wear masks. Social distancing. Ventilation.

echt · 31/10/2020 23:27

Why haven’t govt provided funding for such equipment

Why indeed. It comes out of already diminished budgets.

But the real reasons are:

 1. They don' t give a shit
 2. They don't send their children to state schools
 3. See 1.
Pomegranatespompom · 31/10/2020 23:27

Teachers are wearing masks on our primary. We have staggered start times and good communication from the school re drop off/ distancing etc.
From the graphs it looked like the over 15s were a higher we risk group ?

saraclara · 31/10/2020 23:29
@DianaT1969- who works without PPE other than teachers?
More to the point, how many people work among customers/colleagues who don't wear masks?

Masks are to protect others. Even if a teacher was allowed by their headteacher to wear a mask, they'd only be protecting the kids. You know, those 30 people NOT wearing masks who are sharing that fetid air with her/him, in a small classroom with windows that don't open more than two inches because of H&S, and where social distancing can't be maintained.

THAT'S what marks teaching out as different and high risk.

WhyNotMe40 · 31/10/2020 23:29

If teachers are wearing masks in your primary during lessons, they are going against the DfE guidance at the moment.

commandatori · 31/10/2020 23:30

“Large private school” - there’s your answer. The government don’t actually really care about the wellbeing of school staff, which is why they’ve left everything up to individual schools so they can blame everyone but themselves if schools end up having to close due to cases. They don’t really care about any worker, to be fair, and generally teachers have good government perks such as pensions and pay increases, so it’s not all bad by any stretch of the imagination. But yeah - I don’t believe the government really care and that’s why they’re not funding it. I get plenty of hand sanitiser which I am very grateful for, but the idea of a screen around my desk is insane.
WhyNotMe40 · 31/10/2020 23:31

Saraclare - sorry but you're wrong. There is now lots of peer reviewed repeated articles and evidence showing that cloth masks reduce the viral dose to the wearer - so can stop you getting it, or if enough does get through - you only get a mild case.

Valenciaoranges · 31/10/2020 23:31

@jomartin281271
I wasn’t aware the government had forbidden school staff to wear masks. I guess being private, we don’t have to conform?? It seems ridiculous not to provide basic protective equipment for staff.

WhyNotMe40 · 31/10/2020 23:33

Happy to provide my own mask, as are my colleagues. We just want to be allowed to wear them.
