So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

You are protected by staying 2m away from pupils and staff, or 1m away for less than 15 minutes, which you can do quite easily.

Nope. The front row in my room is less than 1m from me. If I want to be 2m away, I have to be next door. With 32 students in my classes, I can do nothing about that.

lesleyfish · 01/11/2020 11:16

I'm a 60 year old primary teacher and not keen on being cannon fodder in the Covid crisis! In order for schools to stay open and be safe for staff, there needs to be loads more measures in place, more than a squirt of hand sanitiser. The government need to look around the world and see what is in place. I'd like to see daily temperature testing for children, weekly testing for adults, adults wearing ffp2 masks in the classroom, children who are ill to be sent home and tested- we know Covid symptoms in children are different and more wide ranging than in adults. Many countries now expect children over 6 to wear a mask in school. Having spoken to my teacher friends in Spain, the children quickly got used to them and there is no excessive spread of Covid in schools. So yes I'd like to see that happen here too - I know it's unpopular but it may well be the only way schools can keep open.

@ParlezVousWronglais

We are not being protected and it's disgusting.

I’m isolating this week due to one of my students testing positive just before half term. 1m/2m “where possible” in the Dfe guidance. Some classrooms are large enough to stay the recommended distance away - one classroom I teach in doesn’t even have a window.
motherrunner · 01/11/2020 11:23

Are NOT large enough

monkeytennis97 · 01/11/2020 11:26

Actually a more accurate thread title would be "To think schools will be shit during lockdown ".Grin

Gallows humour in case any goady people go up in arms.

monkeytennis97 · 01/11/2020 11:29

@ParlezVousWronglais I teach in 8 different classrooms currently. I am lucky as so can be 2m away from the pupils in 4 of them. The other 4 around a meter. Other staff aren't quite as lucky as me if they mainly teach core subject or key stage 3 or super popular subjects in 6th form.

monkeytennis97 · 01/11/2020 11:30

Metre- autocorrect!

There is no doubt that closures damage the economy and future prospects of an entire generation.

The deaths of hundreds of thousands would be worse far worse.

In fact you would care bigger all about the economy or education if you are dead..

Do people REALLY believe that the deaths of 4K a day (W/c scenario) or 2k a day (b/c scenario) will have no effect on the economy . ? If you kept your pub/restaurant/hair salon open - do you REALLY believe that you will have sufficient custom to make it worthwhile?

I for one started seriously restricting my movements 4 weeks ago.. as I saw the rate of increase . Do those against a lock down believe that a significant percentage gave of the population won't also do the same - regardless of laws /advice/guidance as most people have an in built need for self preservation- and going about your normal business in a pandemic is just - well , really really daft and shows a level of stupidity beyond normal comprehension?

Sonnenscheins · 01/11/2020 11:36

If you kept your pub/restaurant/hair salon open - do you REALLY believe that you will have sufficient custom to make it worthwhile?

It's not just the lost business to the pub, restaurant and hair salon owners, but the massive furlough payments necessary to support the employees!

Yes, that's very very costly for the economy.

Sonnenscheins · 01/11/2020 11:40

I feel really angry that people who are either sahm parents or have jobs that allow ability to work flexibly from home dont care that it will throw hundreds of thousands into poverty / crisis if primary aged children are locked out of school.

I think most people and most Governments think like you, and that's why schools are kept open.

Not just in the Uk but also in France and Germany during their upcoming lockdowns.

teachcolate · 01/11/2020 11:46

I hope the schools stay open for mental health and development of children.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 01/11/2020 11:49

@LolalovesLondon - you welcome to come into my classrooms (I teach in 8) to view the space between myself and my students. Hence windows wide open. In one room I might as well teach in the car park. We can all wear coats!

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 11:50

Bailey

I definitely care more about human lives and suffering over anything else - which is why I get so annoyed with people who are blasé about caregivers, shop workers, doctors, nurses, teachers, In fact anyone who has to make contact with the general public day in day out not being given adequate protection.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 01/11/2020 11:50

Yes so why can’t we all agree to follow the rules outside of school in order to achieve that? Let’s stop making up our own versions.
Sonnenscheins · 01/11/2020 11:51

Do people REALLY believe that the deaths of 4K a day (W/c scenario) or 2k a day (b/c scenario) will have no effect on the economy

Those deaths are of course tragic.

But no, the effect on the economy will be negligible.

Lockdowns are much much more costly in the long term. Our children will be paying back massive debts!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 01/11/2020 11:52

It will take a decade to pay back the COVID debt. Another decade of austerity and underinvestment in schools

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 11:53

staffassociation

Have you tagged me by mistake?
My classroom is a shoe box (as stated above) I also teach in 3 other rooms equally inadequate! Same situation here!
We’re you

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 01/11/2020 11:53

YABU! Lost for words at the ignorance

Thrownaway · 01/11/2020 11:53

Feeling less optimistic about schools being able to stay open and Getting really frustrated by all of the threads about people stating as long as the schools are open that they wont be following rules outside of school

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 11:55

I said above that I would have to press myself into a corner to be 2m away from anyone!

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 11:57

2m 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'd take 2cm on the stairs. Most I'm away from front row is the width of a desk. And I'm standing, they are sitting, so I breathe on them all lesson. What could possibly go wrong !

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 11:58

I currently teach in 24 different classrooms. All too small for the 30+ kids they are currently housing.

I absolutely agree.

I don't think schools should be as they are, but we could make them safer, take kids out into nature (we are lucky here to be easily able to do that), and we could have an element of blended learning. I'm sure it could be made safer, working with parents' situations and capacity to teach at home.

Is that a joke?

Talk about clueless.
