To think schools should be shut during lockdown.

So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

Sorry for snapping there, Wax. But really, do think about wearing a mask. We are all responsible for limiting spread as much as possible. It's not just about you, it's about the people further down the chain of infection that you may be part of.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:15

Flax
I know teachers refer to those agencies

As I said, not in secondary schools.
The vast majority of teaching staff do not have the authority to contact outside agencies.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/11/2020 09:16

@Nellodee it's OK, it's a shit time and we're all feeling the stress.

Nellodee · 01/11/2020 09:16

In my 50s here with other risk factors as well. My risk of death is quite small, 1 in 500 or so. But there are thousands of teachers in my position and some of us will die. Just because it probably won't be me, doesn't make me happy about it.

user00119922 · 01/11/2020 09:16

All the people moaning about who will look after their kids if schools shut, well obviously schools will be open for key worker children just like last time.

If you're not a key worker you're either furloughed or working from home.

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:16

@Flaxmeadow sorry, did I miss you naming the shop you work in ? I would genuinely like to complain to their head office if you are having to deal with such crowding.
I don't go shopping as minimise my risk as much as I can outside school, but from what I've heard everywhere is really empty and wearing masks with screens up at tills, so this shop needs shaming.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:16

I've never said they shouldn't demand PPE - they can demand what they like. I got asked for my advice and I gave it. Personally I'd just get on with it because the risk of dying is minute.

Nice to hear you’re immune.

SophieB100 · 01/11/2020 09:16

Staff absence in schools and lack of supply and cover, due to illness will enforce school closures. Just like March.
Boris can then blame the pesky teachers for catching the virus and enforcing closures.
I work in a secondary btw.

Sonnenscheins · 01/11/2020 09:17

I've not read the whole thread so apologies if it's already been mentioned.

People need to realise that the reason we're making sacrifices elsewhere with this lockdown is SO THAT education and healthcare CAN stay open.

And yes, fully support adequate protection for all key workers.

And yes, families need to stick to the rules and stop the transmission of the virus in the community.

Completmentfille · 01/11/2020 09:17

You can't look after young children and work from home, not effectively anyway.

Flaxmeadow · 01/11/2020 09:17

Staff in retail wear masks, they socially distance, they’re not in close contact with 30 odd people all day and many will be off during this new lockdown if they’re in non essential retail. Not the same conditions at all

So why arent teachers wearing masks? It's up to a teacher to put a mask on and ensure social distancing, just like in retail it's up to staff to do it

Staff in retail haven't always worn masks or had screens BTW. They have worked all the way through this pandemic. In crowded conditions too and also been attacked in some cases, especially when certain goods ran out . From the data, they and some other professions, are more at risk than teachers off catching covid. Do, or did, you see calls for strike from them?

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:18

@SophieB100 it's what we are all saying, isn't it ? Keep staff healthy, schools can stay open. We get sick, schools have to close. Weirdly people don't get it ???

Bollss · 01/11/2020 09:18

Immune? Nope not immune just not terrified. I might die. I mean it's fairly unlikely but I might.
Nellodee · 01/11/2020 09:18

Thanks, Wax, I really appreciate your empathy - will try to work on my own. It really is a shit time.

Bollss · 01/11/2020 09:19
@TrustTheGeneGenie risk of dying is not minute for me. I'm 53 with a heart condition.
Statistically you are still much more likely to live, as is everyone.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:19

But the children are borrred and get in the waaayyyy...

Not my opinion! Sorry! Couldn’t help it!

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:20

@Flaxmeadow my DD worked at a supermarket throughout the previous lockdown and I agree at the start they had no protection at all. Except social distancing was enforced v strictly. Numbers limited in the store and a one way system in place. They now all have masks, screens and once again are limiting numbers.
So how is that the same as a packed school corridor ? To be honest I've only ever seen shops like that during Xmas sales. Which I avoid !

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/11/2020 09:20

@user00119922 that's nonsense, I'm neither a key worker nor furloughed nor able to work from home. I'm in manufacturing which has been told to continue but for non essential products so not classed as "key."

Bollss · 01/11/2020 09:20

A) that's wrong and b) if it's not your opinion why are you saying it? Being deliberately goady is against the rules you know.
pigcon1 · 01/11/2020 09:21

Schools were not open for key worker children last time. I am a key worker married to a key worker. We were deflected from schools at the start of Covid.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:21

Immune? Nope not immune just not terrified. I might die. I mean it's fairly unlikely but I might.

I’m neither immune or terrified.
I still want PPE and don’t think I should just ‘get on with it’ if my employer doesn’t provide it.

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:22

@TrustTheGeneGenie try telling that to my colleague's children who no longer have a mum. She was 49. And ran marathons. Your empathy is outstanding today.

Nellodee · 01/11/2020 09:22

Flaxmeadow, we are not allowed to wear masks in lessons and nor are our students. This is the same in most schools, as per the government guidelines. Some schools have gone against the guidelines, but these are an absolute minority.

In my school, teachers and students are permitted to wear masks between lessons. The vast majority of teachers do, the vast majority of students don't.

Bollss · 01/11/2020 09:23

Presumably she was one of a very tiny % it is indeed very sad that she died, I'm sorry for your loss but that doesn't change the fact that everyone has a much bigger chance of surviving than they do dying.

Stating facts is fuck all to do with empathy.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:23

Trust
Being deliberately goady is against the rules you know.

It had been said many times on many threads.
