I just want normality not just for one day 😩

OP posts:

The whataboutery of eid is about the sheer SNEERING the eid celebrating community faced 'their STUBBORNNESS' about being together! Huh! ...and now we're doing the self same thing; gnashing of teeth, hand wringing, stating intentions to break the rules for crimbo, but on a far more massive scale!? Its enough to make you puke

Dilbertian · 01/11/2020 14:47

Other religions have important events that dont have the same effect on the whole society, regardless of how religious the country is.

Really? How utterly Christian-centric. And ignorant.

CraftyGin · 01/11/2020 15:03

I doubt that those who want a Christmas at all costs are particularly Christian. I don’t think this is a religious debate.

HitchikersGuide · 01/11/2020 15:08

Yes. It rather feels like being treated like a toddler - 'if you're naughty, father Xmas won't visit'. It's the one day I'd actually want to be locked down and not have to deal with my insane elderly relatives😂

fortyfifty · 01/11/2020 15:23

Agree OP. I think it would be betetr for families to get together when it is low risk to do so. In fact, I feel like families getting together indoors for prolonged social gatherings is why we are where we are. As soon as my kids were back in school I knew that meant not seeing my parents in the way we'd been able to see them over the summer holidays when cases were low and I could control who we all mixed with leading up to a visit. But some many people on here have said they won't stop seeing doing what they want or have had to wait for a lockdown to realise what the risk is.

I wouldn't want anyone to be on their own for Christmas but it would be safer for people on their own to get together with other people on their own than to have lots of extended family gatherings in households with children and young people or adults who work in high risk occupations.

ittooshallpass · 01/11/2020 17:44

Since this whole thing started, I have been totally amazed at the number of people who eat takeaways, have to go to the pub at least 3 times a week and are adamant they deserve an annual holiday.

And here we are again, with people outraged that Christmas will be 'ruined'. Seriously?

With the 75th anniversary of D day this year, I watched a few documentaries about WW2 and thought how awful it must have been for all the families with no contact with loved ones for years on end. We are far more lucky, we have so many ways to keep in touch; email, voicemail, mobile phones, video calls, zoom... I could go on.... so I just don't understand what the problem is here? Yes it's different, but you can talk to and see who you want, pretty much when you want with whatever method of communication you choose.

There are lots of FB pages springing up with local businesses showing and selling their wares if you really have to buy (more stuff you don't need). So just do Christmas a bit differently, quietly, at home without a fuss and without a house-full.

It's just me and DD again for lockdown - I've had no job since June, so it doesn't fill me with joy to do it again - but those moaning about getting together for Christmas really need to put things into perspective.

pontypridd · 01/11/2020 17:58

Yes. Once again they’re addressing us as if we are children. This government is forever patronising and underestimating the intelligence of it’s people.

LizB62A · 01/11/2020 18:06

Nobody seemed to care about saving Eid - why does Christmas trump Eid ?

I'm sort of hoping that a Lockdown Christmas 2020 helps to permanently reset our overspending, consumerised version of Christmas and that people don't waste money they can't afford on mountains of presents....

Benjispruce2 · 01/11/2020 18:33

I guess the answer is that it’s a Christian country and therefore Christmas is more widely celebrated than Eid. Personally, I’m not bothered.

annabel85 · 01/11/2020 19:51

The takeaways are more irrelevant as many food places have stayed open throughout, even during lockdown with takeaways.

The British obsession with booze and foreign holidays is off the charts though. God forbid having one summer without either, in the middle of a pandemic (or at least just drink at home).

The first wave had also cleared by the time of Eid, although there were still clusters of cases in some areas. The end of July half the country was pissing off to Spain and Lanzarote and things were more normal as it was the height of summer.

We knew a second wave in winter was going to happen, realistically, and we're going to be right in the middle of it going into Christmas. The lockdown might slow the spread (although schools and unis still open won't help) but we're not going to be in the position where it'll be fine by December and a normal Christmas can ensue.

Christmasfairy2020 · 01/11/2020 20:11

I live with an alcoholic husband whom I very much dislike at moment. We have 2 kids whom he always says the eldest is his favourite in front of 6 yr old. He wont move out. I hate him!! I earn more but he wint go. So ye in stuck in xmas day with him and kids arguing and him slamming doors. We was going out to his mums which is better for kids. But ye what a gr8 xmas I'll have this year!!

Plus the min uni students go home the rates will.spike. best thing to do it send them home and say dont come back everything is online

It is not currently legal for most uni students to "go home", anyone in a tier 2 or above region cannot mix with another household, almost all university students are in a university household.

I'm sure the police will be taking appropriate action...

Gwenhwyfar · 02/11/2020 19:41

"The British obsession with booze and foreign holidays is off the charts though."

Boozing maybe, but I'd be surprised if Britain was even in the top 5 of European countries where people are used to foreign holidays.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/11/2020 19:45

@hopeishere

What do you do that you only get two weeks off at Christmas? Do you not get any other annual leave?
No, I don't. I'm not in the UK. I can take unpaid leave if necessary.
Gwenhwyfar · 02/11/2020 19:48

"There is zero enforcement now ffs, let alone over Christmas."

There was enforcement at Easter. Someone I know's brother drove over to hers to leave some Easter eggs at the door. He was stopped by the police and asked where he was going.

NorbertMeubles · 02/11/2020 20:17

I hate the way Boris is gearing up to be the saviour of Christmas. It's ridiculous and he must genuinely think we are all thick as shit and all we want is good old Mr Johnson to allow us all a Christmas. It's like he looks at us as if we're all Bob Cratchit.

Torvean32 · 02/11/2020 20:44

If the UK had followed Nz we could be living much better lives right now. Our bonus is being an island. Like NZ we should have closed the border both in-going and out-going. That would have stopped cases being brought in.

An outbreak where i stay was caused by a traveller that refused to quarantine.

Nz have beaten it twice now. I could have cried when I saw crowds being able to attend the rugby last week.

Christmas is one of the main celebrations of my faith. I felt sorry about the communities being unable to celebrate Eid too.

Our plans would not break any Covid rules, as long as England is out of lockdown. I dont think I'm being selfish. I've self distanced and worn a mask. I've not had ppl in my house. I've only used shops mimimally. I've had a tough year medically and have had to cope with it alone. I just want some time with my dad.

Weirdly, for MN, I am a Christian, and the upsetting thing (for me) about Christmas being rubbish isn't that I can't see my parents (though that makes me sad, too) - but is that all the special bits have been taken away. Christmas, for me, isn't just one day. It's the build-up. The Advent service. All the other services in the run-up to 25th December. Spending most of the day in church with a huge community of like-minded people.

That has all been taken away.

Bollocks to that.

Then why are you so invested in our feelings about our lockdown here in the UK? Boris 'saving' Christmas or whatever has absolutely no effect on you if you're not in the UK.

Dugger57 · 02/11/2020 21:41

Yep I’m with you. I want normality back for more than just one day.

My family is. I haven't seen them for a year.
