To think those happy about the new lockdown are usually privileged

Seen many people on Mumsnet and on other social media borderline happy as soon as a second lockdown was leaked.

Am I missing the memo? So many our going to lose their jobs, homes, mental health.

Not to mention the cost of borrowing all this money that our dc and grandkids will have to repay.

I’m just confused how anyone can be happy about this. To me it’s a disaster.

I agree.
Those in the public sector and idiots like Piers Morgan promote lockdown but their jobs aren’t affected.

justanotherneighinparadise · 31/10/2020 19:36

@IcedPurple

What a load of unashamed stealth bragging. Behave yourself.

Not sure what her and her husband being (supposedly) "very much in love" has got to do with the price of eggs.

it runs on par with the lovely Kim Kardashian who was busy being a complete bellend this week whilst claiming to be super humble and recognising her privilege she also bragged all over social media about hiring a private island for her family and friends.

Nobody needs to know. Just shut the fuck up.

FreshFreesias I'm in the public sector. My fixed term contract runs out December 31st. This is not at all uncommon in the NHS these days. Don't point the finger at us.

Legoandloldolls · 31/10/2020 19:51

Well if you dont have to work or worry about cash flow you wouldnt care about lockdown so .... some people will be in the position where they dont really give a shit if others loose jobs and turn to food banks. Maybe the same thinking as the masses of Tory MPs who voted to no extend free school meals.

Doobydoo · 31/10/2020 20:28

I am not 'happy' about a lockdown although I think there should be one..including schools etc. I am a nurse..in a care home..it is very difficult. Various people isolating etc since schools reopened. I do not get paid if I have to. Perhaps ssp. I would like to see Basic income for people until such time as vaccine/ test and trace( rapid) is sorted.

AndromedaPerseus · 31/10/2020 22:31

My local independent cafe, hairdressers, pub and restaurant have expressed concern about whether they would be able to survive another lockdown as they were literary living hand to mouth during the last one. The loss of these places would make my community a very bleak place to live

Or they may be elderly, vulnerable, BAME, or have elderly, vulnerable, BAME family and pleased that measures are being taken to protect themselves, their family, the NHS and get rates down.

McCheney73 · 31/10/2020 23:15

Spot on op.
I'm furlough again just before Christmas great.
I barely get by as it is.

So worried about the economy. I really can't see how it will survive again and the worse thing is our children will be the ones paying this huge debt back
Also the lack of job prospects for them

Dh just commented he’s the only one of us stuck in as dc will be at school and I’ll be going to work. I feel so bad for him but not sure how to help.

HotToCold · 31/10/2020 23:36

Not true

Been shielding since March

On benefits during this time

Hate it. But happy there is another lockdown and i feel it will give the NHS abit of breathing space

AldiAisleofCrap · 31/10/2020 23:45

@Strawberrypancakes Anyone who welcomes this lockdown shit is 100% a selfish arsehole who is clearly unaffected. it’s not selfish to want lives to be saved, both people with Covid and others that would have no treatment if the nhs is overwhelmed.
I care more about a strangers life being saved than a strangers business being saved.

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 23:47

AldiAisleofCrap If you cared about lives then you should care about that strangers business.

BubblyBarbara · 01/11/2020 00:09

I feel so bad for him but not sure how to help

I wouldn't. You'll be out slogging away and he can be sat on his video games or watching the telly!

AldiAisleofCrap · 01/11/2020 00:21

@Nicknacky Anyone who welcomes this lockdown shit is 100% a selfish arsehole who is clearly unaffected. I do I think it’s devastating for those whose business will go under. I just care more for those who are dying from everything from
Covid to cancer as a direct result of the pandemic.
Business can pick up again in time or sadly they may not, but the business owner are still alive the families still have their loved ones.

AldiAisleofCrap · 01/11/2020 00:22

@Nicknacky sorry I quoted the wrong post If you cared about lives then you should care about that strangers business.
As I explained above I do care.

Nicknacky · 01/11/2020 00:25

AldiAisleofCrap Your naivety is heartwarming. Many many business owners and employees will commit suicide.

But as long as they don’t die of Covid, eh?

HazeyJaneII · 01/11/2020 00:30

I haven't seen anyone 'happy about lockdown'. I've seen people feeling it's necessary, whilst absolutely gutted it's happening. I've seen people angry and scared and worried about the future both because of lockdown and because of Covid.
I think the word 'privilege' in these kind of circumstances is an overused shitty stick to beat people with.

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 01/11/2020 10:02

We did what we were told to for months and I’m so fed up of being called stupid and uncaring. I’m asking for transparent decision making with clear outcomes and lines of accountability. I want the most vulnerable to be prioritised when deciding what to lockdown and I want to see the evidence that these decisions will have the maximum impact on spread for the minimum impact on freedom. It’s been 8 months. Where’s the fecking plan?

hamstersarse · 01/11/2020 10:14

Still no clear strategy for care homes where the majority of deaths happen. 8 months on.

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 01/11/2020 10:24

@hamstersarse I’d like be to see a proper strategy in care homes that balances protection with the need for social interaction.

Figmentofmyimagination · 01/11/2020 10:26

If nothing else, never again should people vote for a party that has left us with the lowest hospital bed count in Europe. Wtf were they thinking (the politicians and the people who voted for them).

UnaOfStormhold · 01/11/2020 10:38

It's really not helping sensible debate about this to assume that anyone in favour of lockdown doesn't care about the economy and welfare impacts, or conversely that anyone not in favour of lockdown doesn't care about health. The govt's mismanagement (particularly of test and trace) has put us in a position where there are no good options and either way the costs will be horrendous.

On balance I feel that lockdown is the better of the options available now (a 2 week circuit breaker earlier in the year would have been better all round!) basically because I think letting COVID get further out of control will quickly become as bad as lockdown for the economy, mental health and treatment for other conditions. But I have huge empathy for those who are going to struggle financially or mentally because of it, and am furious with this govt that the support needed is just not there.
