To think those happy about the new lockdown are usually privileged

Seen many people on Mumsnet and on other social media borderline happy as soon as a second lockdown was leaked.

Am I missing the memo? So many our going to lose their jobs, homes, mental health.

Not to mention the cost of borrowing all this money that our dc and grandkids will have to repay.

I’m just confused how anyone can be happy about this. To me it’s a disaster.

Unsure33 · 31/10/2020 16:53

I disagree . I don’t think anyone is “happy “ about the lock down .

Even if financially you are ok , no one is immune from missing their family friends and just general human contact .

Lock down or no lockdown everything will be affected by so many people either off sick or isolating .

SpeedofaSloth · 31/10/2020 16:54

YANBU.

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2020 16:54

What is the alternative?

Say we didn't lock down, do people really think that restaurants will still be getting enough bums on seats if the number of cases keep rising, hospitals become overwhelmed and the body count starts to ramp up?

With the best will in the world we either try and manage the situation or let it get out of control. In each scenario its likely that the economy will be completely screwed.

The idea we can separate the health outcomes from the economic ones is a fallacy.

I certainly don't want another lockdown. I know so many people on the brink in multiple ways but i also know that we are screwed if we try and keep restaurants open regardless.

The bottom line is that either fear or restrictions mean the death of the economy. We only get the choice of poison we swallow. We are in too deep a mess to avoid the horror about to unfold - both health and economic.

Carpathian2 · 31/10/2020 16:55

We could debate this till the cows come home, but we have no choice or say about whether there's a lockdown or not. It's been imposed on us and it feels like we're living in a police state.

I lost my job after the last lockdown and I'm now living on my savings and was hoping to find a new job soon, there's no chance of that now and I'll have to claim benefits for the first time ever and its really pissed me off. I'm vulnerable with health problems but I'd take my chances, only I can't because the government says so.

Aridane · 31/10/2020 16:57

@FourTeaFallOut

I don't see anyone pissing rainbows about it tbh.
Agree
GabsAlot · 31/10/2020 16:59

im not happy and it doesnt affect me or dh whatsoever-im thinking about others who will lose their jobs or wont get full pay

GabsAlot · 31/10/2020 17:00

when i say it doesnt affect me of of coursei cant visit my family

Mumbum2011 · 31/10/2020 17:02

I'm in a secure role and financially lucky, but I do not want a lockdown, as a parent and as a professional who works with children with special needs. They need to be in school. The impact of the last lockdown on children with complex needs and their families has been horrendous to watch. Add in financial struggles and it's a nightmare for people. I fear vulnerable people with mental health may not make it through another lockdown.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 31/10/2020 17:04

OP I disagree to an extent. I'm self-employed and won't be paid whilst we are in lockdown as my industry will be told to close.

But if it's what we need to do for a month so we can see our families at Christmas a little more, I'm happy to do so.

Not that I'm farting rainbows about the whole thing, of course. And I feel for everybody who is going to suffer as a result. Hopefully it won't last long Sad

AldiAisleofCrap · 31/10/2020 17:06

No there are those that are willing to accept personal financial loss to save the lives of strangers. And of course they should close schools to all but key workers and vulnerable dc.

stayathomer · 31/10/2020 17:06

I’m always very suspicious about the people constantly calling for school closures. They either have no kids, are teachers or have anxiety issues surrounding their children/are vulnerable themselves. Everyone I know is DESPERATE for schools to stay open.
Or you have the other option, people with children in schools where there are cases of covid but because children wear masks they're not deemed close contacts. I want schools open but given the amount of emails we got before bank holiday telling us not to worry but to make sure to keep an eye out for symptoms, very few children are symptomatic yada yada yada I dont know any more. And the school is doing a great job in all the other ways but ...

NoMoreFlowers · 31/10/2020 17:09

Nobody's happy about a lockdown, but what would you propose as an alternative?

SeekingAnswers3 · 31/10/2020 17:11

I propose they should have done a circuit breaker weeks ago when they were advised to! I suggest instead of firefighting they start actually tackling the problem before it escalates.

This isn’t just going to be November. They’ve left it too late

SeekingAnswers3 · 31/10/2020 17:13

Their actions here prove they didn’t learn anything from lockdown 1 and leaving it too late then

WankPuffins · 31/10/2020 17:15

I agree.

We are only in a good position now as we loved in January across the country to a much (much) cheaper area where we can live of Dh wage alone. Luckily he has the same secure job and we could move as they agreed home working. Local authority job which will never be redundant.

Prior to that we were in London paying 2k a month rent for a shithole. I had to work a min wage job in mental health. We actually had to move when i had pneumonia last December and went on SSP - we couldn’t pay the rent and the council dragged their heals with any help.

Thank god that happened though. My old colleagues have had to self isolate on SSP many times. We’d have been fucked if we were still living there.

So while it doesn’t matter to us at all now, it could have been very different. So I fully sympathise.

NoMoreFlowers · 31/10/2020 17:15

Yes, I agree. There should have been a circuit breaker weeks ago.

Best wishes OP 🌺

HMSSophie · 31/10/2020 17:16

So why the fuck do the scientists think a lockdown is needed? Why is this shitting useless government, which would prioritise the economy every single time over the deaths of a few thousands, implement lockdown?

Those of you saying lockdown is bad, are you really saying that the vast majority of those who know significantly more than any of us, about the facts and the trajectory for the UK, are saying lockdown is needed just for shits and giggles?

pointythings · 31/10/2020 17:19

Nobody is happy about this lockdown, but the choice is between the Devil and the deep blue sea. If we had had a proper Test and Trace service instead of a 'jobs for the boys' one, if we hadn't had cowboy PPE suppliers who happened to be Tory donors, if Dominic Cummings had had his Cummings-uppance after breaking lockdown, the UK might be in a better situation. But here we are. It's shit. However, I work for the NHS and I know how worried people are about what's coming. I also know too many people who would not survive a brush with COVID. Happy about lockdown? I'm not. Do I think it's the least worst option? Yes, I think it probably is.

Hellothere19999 · 31/10/2020 17:20

I’m absolutely gutted about it tbh. What are we gonna do? Keep having lockdowns forever? There will be no shops or cafes etc able to survive it, high streets will die. Women can’t go to scans with their partners and there is already a rise in stillborn babies and suicides. It’s absolutely fucked. If there are protests I personally will be going.

WanderingMilly · 31/10/2020 17:22

Yes, lockdown is shit. We shouldn't have to do it again, I can't believe anyone is happy about this. It will ruin the economy, ruin lives and businesses and people's mental health....and for what? It won't do any good because the virus will only be paused until we open up again.

What's more, without schools shutting, we really aren't going to make a huge dent in things in any case.....but yes, I agree that shutting schools makes things even more difficult for children, families, for education and for preventing parents from working.

The country is absolutely stuck, whichever way we turn.....

@Rabbitholebonkers

Of course. I read one comment on FB this morning from said privileged person “can’t wait to hibernate and be all cosy all winter”.

How lovely for people.

Can’t believe someone would say that out loud!!
doubleshotespresso · 31/10/2020 17:25

OP it's an awful situation and must be hugely frustrating for business owners like yourself-I'm so sorry

But I don't think it's the case that anyone is "happy" for a further lockdown. I'm not happy but accept it's the best (but far too delayed ) option. I can't see the point of this unless they do close schools and all other non-essential things if this can be expected to work. If we are to be convinced by the short, sharp concept of a circuit break then we need almost everything closed if we all ever have a chance of returning to something resembling normal life anytime soon.

SpookyRhubarbYoghurt · 31/10/2020 17:27

@SmudgeButt

Some of my work colleagues will be thrilled as they can sit at home with full pay and spend all their time watching Netflix and playing computer games. And then complain about not being able to go to the pub or clubbing or visiting their family wherever.

Our employer is willing to finance this so that they can look as generous as the politicians. The fact that some of us will need to continue* to work and cover for those who can't gets us a little pat on the head and all the "teamwork" platitudes.

*I'm only complaining about my nonworking colleagues not those outside of the company I work for. yes - I am bitter about it.

Snap.
Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 17:27

happygolucy You have missed the point so badly it’s amusing and you are proving the OP’s point.

At least you can be smug with your secure jobs. Lucky you.
