For tier 2 residents to travel from tier 2 to tier 1 to socialise indoors (max group size 6 maintaining social distancing).

Adult son who lives with me wants to visit friends all of whom are tier 1. He's the only tier 2 resident.

It's illegal with a fine of £200 for a first offence doubling on each further offence to a maximum of £6400.

CovidPostingName · 28/10/2020 12:18

Sadly for your son it's illegal for him to do this as a tier 2 resident, regardless of where the socialising takes place.

MiddlesexGirl · 28/10/2020 12:26

Thank you.
That's what I thought. Oh dear. Puts us in a difficult position as I doubt he'll not go.

Don’t have him back in your house then ( if he lives with you)

I had this with an adult child of mine!

HarrietOh · 28/10/2020 12:29

He's allowed to meet them outside.

BigBigPumpkin · 28/10/2020 12:30

Not illegal.

See just under the blue box.

Are you worried about him breaking the law or are you worried that he will catch or give them COVID?

BeanieB2020 · 28/10/2020 12:30

Do any of his friends have a spare room he can rent while the tier system is in place?

MiddlesexGirl · 28/10/2020 12:37

I'm worried about him breaking the law.
He can't afford to rent at the moment.

@BigBigPumpkin Hmmm ..... I'll be much happier if that's true. Can I ask what website that's from?

Not allowed to mix with other households indoors

HotToCold · 28/10/2020 12:39

Im sure this isnt breaking the rules !
This is allowed although, not advised

Lougle · 28/10/2020 12:41

It shouldn't matter. If it's official advice not to, he shouldn't be doing it. This is why people are being put in harder and harder lockdowns, because people aren't following the advice.

TheDrsDocMartens · 28/10/2020 12:45

Hancock answered this specific question in the commons & it’s not allowed. Whether it’s illegal I don’t know.

fizzyp0p · 28/10/2020 12:47

Sorry to be thick I'm in tier 2
Am I allowed to meet my mum in a cafe in a tier 1 area? Assume ok if it's outdoor seating area?

Tier 2 are allowed to meet outside socially distanced, so yes. You just cannot go to a tier 1 area and act like tier 1 people.

This dystopia sounds like the making of a sci fi move.

NotAnActualSheep · 28/10/2020 12:57

It is illegal (schedule 1,part 1, 1(2)) unless any of the exemptions apply. And subject to the fixed penalties in part 3, (6).

Outdoors at a cafe is fine.

MiddlesexGirl · 28/10/2020 12:59

What's the difference between not allowed and illegal. Aren't they both the same?

Why are Hancock and Sadiq Khan saying different things?

It shouldn't matter. If it's official advice not to, he shouldn't be doing it.

I know. But all I can do is try to persuade. If it's not illegal I don't stand any chance.

@BigBigPumpkin

Not illegal.

@BigBigPumpkin Sadiq is talking about just travelling outside tier 2 generally though - it is allowed though you can only spend time with people outdoors not indoors (you have to follow the rules of your own tier). So this quote isn’t really about what you’re asking.
Farahilda · 28/10/2020 13:04

It's illegal

www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/1104/schedule/1/paragraph/1/made

GabsAlot · 28/10/2020 13:09

you can meet just outside-if it wasnt illegal wouldnt everyone just do it

MiddlesexGirl · 28/10/2020 13:09

Sadiq is talking about just travelling outside tier 2 generally though - it is allowed though you can only spend time with people outdoors not indoors (you have to follow the rules of your own tier). So this quote isn’t really about what you’re asking.

But he does say (if quoted accurately) to meet with a tier 1 person under their rules.
I suspect that either Sadiq is wrong or the website has quoted inaccurately or at the least misleadingly.

Loads of people are doing it anyway - whether illegal or not. Which makes it very difficult for me to persuade my son otherwise.

OP posts:
GabsAlot · 28/10/2020 13:39

yes they are doing it but maybe dont realise they can be fined

people were fined in my local town by the police randomly going in and asking for id to see where they lived

GabsAlot · 28/10/2020 13:40

you cant go from tier 2 to 1 and mix with their rules

TeapotCollection · 28/10/2020 13:43

Tell him it’s illegal and if he goes ahead and does it anyway he doesn’t come anywhere near your house for 2 weeks
