We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

@Oliversmumsarmy I saw it reported by one of the local newspapers this week that something like 60-70% were in support of the two week firebreak (not lockdown-in-general). Can't find it now to show you though, which is bloody typical Grin

IcedPurple · 24/10/2020 11:55

Have you never heard of making a card? That should do for a few weeks at least.

Yes, I've heard of gasp making cards. Did it quite a bit back in my primary school days, although not in the few decades since then.

That said, not sure how one can gasp make a card if things like paper and coloured pencils are considered 'non-essential' and purchasing them is certain to give you Covid?

I wonder how many people say they are in favour of a lockdown because they feel it's the 'right' thing to say? It's been shown that even in anonymous polling, people often say what they think they ought to say, rather than what they actually believe.

justasking111 · 24/10/2020 12:01

Well we are a laughing stock now the welsh government FB page is full of comments some of them unprintable. The media is having a field day many amusing memes. It is tough being a welshman just now. Three families here with businesses shut down. God knows when they will get any money, or how much. Self employment is hit so badly as is tourism.

Is the supermarket going to refuse a mum with a baby

I actually had a kettle go bang at 1am while making a feed when Ds was a baby. Thank fuck we had a 24 hour Asda very nearby so Dh could buy one.

I said that exact thing earlier in the year when people were all for nothing but food being sold.

One response I got was “was there any reason you couldn’t breastfeed” which was peak Mumsnet for me.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/10/2020 12:10

Just seen the footage from Manchester on the news, with people milling about, doing their thing. It does make you wonder what the point of us doing lockdown is, if everyone else is getting on the bus and going shopping even in areas of high transmission rates.
Meanwhile in Wales, can't even buy a baking tray!

Response to that - "yes I didn't want to" and just watch all the outraged virtue signalling responses come in. Not only would you be wanting to kill grannies but your child would die of cancer due to formula before they were 30 too. Peak outrage. BF AND Covid - oh the fun of it.

Is the supermarket going to refuse a mum with a baby

Well there was a thread on here yesterday about a pharmacy refusing a mum with small kids...

TwentyViginti · 24/10/2020 12:24

I didn't BF my DC because I didn't want to. They are well over 30 now, but maybe my free access to kettles, baking trays and birthday cards helped.

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 24/10/2020 12:57

A kettle was no less essential when I was breastfeeding, I went through copious amounts of coffee Grin

McSilkson · 24/10/2020 13:29

@MaxNormal

It's only for 17 days, if people listen and stay at home we'll have a nicer Christmas.

You believe that? Grin

Christ, this is mass psychological abuse and conditioning if I ever saw it...!

"You better be good, kiddies, or we'll take away your pressies!" Our rulers and abusers have wired it so that people will blame themselves and each other when every new punitive, authoritarian rule is introduced.

And all this exposes the myth of the UK being a "democracy" once and for all. Demos "the people" + -kratia "power, rule". Roughly half of the population casting a token vote for which group of people they want to give carte blanche to do whatever the hell they like for the next five years (subject to extensions) does NOT equate to rule by the people.

Representative democracy is a contradiction in terms, anyway. Either people have real power, and rule over their own lives, or they don't. And they most definitely don't. When was the last time any of us had a say in the laws and policies that govern every aspect of our lives?

Governments and rulers represent themselves and their own interests and it was ever thus. People have demanded of the "conspiracy theorists" that they suggest an ulterior motive for all this. But there needn't be one. Power is an end in itself. And this has given sovereigns across the world an opportunity to claim absolute power.

Frazzled13 · 24/10/2020 13:34

@BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache

I have had a brainwave!!

The gov knows that the majority support this "firebreak" lockdown, but also know that it's not economically sustainable to keep doing it.

So they have purposely brought in these new restrictions > the electorate's support for lockdown drops > they can then stop future lockdown as "not supported by the majority". Economy saved, whilst maintaining the illusion that they are doing it in line with the populations views.

🤔

It’s ridiculous that it’s got to the point where that genuinely did cross my mind
McSilkson · 24/10/2020 13:40

@RedToothBrush

How and why are people adhereing to something which isn't law and more importantly isn't defined in law?

The reason you have things defined in law is to stop differences in interpretation which can lead to disputes and conflicts.

Honestly everyone in Wales has utterly lost their minds. They should be taking down plastic wrapping and taking things to the tills in protest!

People should be going to the supermarket IN protest.

Covid is an issue, but when your solution to it is to make non legally binding decrees and to create a situation where 'rules' are not defined in law then you unwittingly have created a situation which is more problematic than the virus itself whether you realise it or not.

Insane.

I really hope that Wales asserts itself and tells idiots to bog off because it really is undermining what they are trying to achieve.

The Stanley Milgram experiment: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

The final word on the human tendency towards complete obedience to authority. 66% of people would electrocute a stranger to death at the behest of an authority figure.

Saw this good for him , hopefully others will follow .
Rules are there for a reason but this a step to far people should question authority not except what they are doing is right .
What next I fear !

Coolieloach · 24/10/2020 14:01

I just can’t get all the drama! Is this really about having to have something non essential or about one’s choices being withdrawn for a couple of weeks? Sometimes things are a bit bigger than our personal preferences. Get a grip people, there’s more at stake here than if someone needs a birthday card or new pair of pants!!

JillGoodacre · 24/10/2020 14:07

We had this from March till about June/July here in Kuwait. Only shops that were open were shops that sells food and b&q type stores. Could only order online and that was taking an age to come. My kids outgrew all their clothes, shoes and underwear. We managed. It's not the end of the world. We still can't try clothes on in shops as fitting rooms are still closed.

BeanieB2020 · 24/10/2020 14:08

Wouldn't mind if it was for safety purposes but it pisses me off that it's for "fairness" to businesses that have to close. So never mind people who might need access to clothes or a new hairdryer or an electric stovetop or microwave if their cooker dies, no no you can't have that it's not fair for the businesses. What?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 24/10/2020 14:27

I'm in Wales. It's fucking ridiculous. It's now illegal to purchase a tin opener in the supermarket, because that's homeware and therefore non-essential - except tin openers have a nasty habit of breaking and needing replacing.

So yeah, go out and buy some tinned tomatoes - that's legal - but buying the means to get into that tin isn't legal.

It's bullshit.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 24/10/2020 14:30

This line about "fairness" - surely if they were going to follow that to its logical conclusion, they'd also ban the sale of alcohol, as the pubs are now closed.

The fairness idea is a nonsense anyway, seeing as Amazon exists.

StarCat2020 · 24/10/2020 14:33

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages
Tin openers always break at the most annoying time, don't they?

Do you need one now?

MushMonster · 24/10/2020 14:36

Do any of you know if B&M, Wilko are selling homeware? Like duvets and kettles?
I know they are open during the lockdown, but I do not need anything from them so I am not going into one.
If they are allowed to sell, at least people can get the items they need.
