Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.

We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

Jesus is this some kind of experiment to see how far you can push people before they riot?

lockdownconfused · 23/10/2020 17:42

Tbf you can still buy things online in the same way so if your kettle breaks or your kids suddenly jump in size you can order stuff! It's only for 17 days hopefully 🤞🏻🤞🏻 it's about keeping people at home and not browsing for hours in shops like in March and April!

What is "essential": www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/shopping/supermarkets-essential-shopping-tesco-asda-19154753.amp

Lightbulbs are non essential 🙄

Mark Dickhead, our Supreme Leader, is a buffoon.

You can buy lightbulbs! We won't all have to sit in the dark for 17 days. And rubber gloves.

"Batteries, light bulbs and rubber gloves that would often be sold in other types of shop that are allowed to remain open such as petrol stations and newsagents – they may continue to be sold"

Someonesayroadtrip · 23/10/2020 17:57

I'm in Wales, no matter what side of the argument you are on it seems everyone is unhappy with the way this lockdown is heading/going. A lot of it die at make sense.

It seems supermarkets were only told this morning about the essential items only. That's pretty short notice.

MaxNormal · 23/10/2020 17:59

More money for Amazon the tax-dodgers, less UK tax revenue. Brilliant.

bibbitybobbitycatz · 23/10/2020 17:59

I support the firebreak, but this sort of tinkering around the edges is a bit ill thought out. It smacks of policy making on the hoof.

AllPlayedOut · 23/10/2020 18:13

An awful lot of people seem to automatically believe that stricter = better. They don't question the reasoning behind various 'restrictions', they don't ask for the statistics which led our 'leaders' to come to their decisions, they just assume that they are 'protecting us' and 'keeping us safe'.

I remember back in March many here were praising Spain for its super strict lockdown, which involved children being confined to their homes (usually small apartments) for weeks on end. Now that Spain has had one of the worst resurgences in Europe, they don't talk about it so much these days.

Exactly this. I swear that if Boris, Nicola or Mark or whatever particular Messiah they worship told them to eat shit, their only response would be "How shall we eat shit, O' Lord?"

Buttybach · 23/10/2020 18:16

also all the halloween goods that have been produced by the large supermarkets to supply wales will all end up in landfill. And children wont have costumes to wear when celebrating halloween at home

TooTrusting · 23/10/2020 18:23

@bibbitybobbitycatz not in supermarkets. The garage exemption is because they are too small to be expected to cordon whole areas off/remove stock. But supermarkets must.
I've never seen a petrol station well stocked with different types of lightbulbs. Lots of the fittings in my house are screw in, for example.

TooTrusting · 23/10/2020 18:24

To be fair, we have had notice so there was time to buy these things.

And if your kettle breaks and you need to make up baby bottles? Baby will be ok to wait until tomorrow, will they?

This, some of the comments on here are a bit ridiculous but I think it was a daft decision to make these silly changes last minute.
TheKeatingFive · 23/10/2020 18:30

It is fucking ridiculous. But I’m starting to despair of our entire reaction to this.

PickleASturgeon · 23/10/2020 18:50

Just saw this on YouTube - probably nothing that's not already been said above, but thought I'd share it anyway.

dementedma · 23/10/2020 19:06

In Scotland here and an office worker. We were told we would be allowed back to work as part of Phase 4. That was in March. Still being forced to work at home, even though our very large office is fully compliant. Phase 4 never happened.

TooManyDogsandChildren · 23/10/2020 19:08

Why make people's lives unnecessarily harder? I really do not think that grabbing a bottle of foundation from the makeup aisle while in Tesco's materially alters the risk profile of my shop nor does it help a small shop if you prevent me buying it because I wouldn't have bought it there anyway.

And what if you are a small shop which only sells non-essential stuff? How does that help you?

Goes to show some people should never be allowed to have power.

cardibach · 23/10/2020 19:11

@littlbrowndog

Shoes are essential. Pants are essential. Clothes are essential.

He is bonkers. Same as sturgeon

It’s not essential to buy them for 2 weeks though, is it? And as others have said, if it really is get them online. It’s an attempt to level the playing field and not give all the money to Tesco et al. It does need to be explained better though.

Seems unlikely since I knew about it fairly early yesterday. I doubt my information streams are worse than Tesco’s.
cardibach · 23/10/2020 19:13

Better than. Obviously.

SorrelBlackbeak · 23/10/2020 19:15

"It’s an attempt to level the playing field and not give all the money to Tesco et al"

Much better to give the money to Amazon instead.

Againstmachine · 23/10/2020 19:15

So he wants to create a level playing field, but if you can't get something you have to buy online, that only helps online retail.

Another nailin totalarism being told what you can and cannot buy.

SorrelBlackbeak · 23/10/2020 19:16

@cardibach - preventing people from buying non-essential items was known yesterday, but the list of what actually counted as a non essential item seems only to have been posted this morning.

Saucery · 23/10/2020 19:19

Amazon is not the only online retailer!

AllPlayedOut · 23/10/2020 19:22

It does need to be explained better though.

If you need pants, a jacket or shoes then it is pretty essential. Not everyone can shop online either because they can't access it, don't have the knowledge to use online shopping or can't pay the delivery fees. And those who can shop online will just do that. I don't see them waiting the two plus weeks for the small shops to open again.

It's completely insane. It makes as much sense as ending homelessness by taking homes away from everyone who has one or helping wheelchair users by banning everyone else from walking . There is no justification for it.

SorrelBlackbeak · 23/10/2020 19:23

@Saucery

Amazon is not the only online retailer!
No, but probably the quickest.
