Who thinks the new tier systems will actually work

Just wondering if people think they will work and help bring the cases down enough where we might go lower down in tiers or is it not enough.

No chance. It has taken almost four months to bring down Melbourne and regional Victoria’s rate down from 700 plus a day to single digits, and that was a full lockdown. The UK measures are too confusing and don’t go far enough, and from what I’ve heard, people aren’t following the rules anyway. My heart genuinely goes out to you all, because it looks very scary from here. For those saying this is everywhere, that isn’t true. I’m in Western Australia, we have had zero community transmission since April.

amusedtodeath1 · 18/10/2020 02:02

I don't have much faith that it will tbh. I'd like to hope so, but the reality is there's a lack of compliance, no one trusts the Govt as they seem incompetant and the restrictions are half assed at best.

If it doesn't work though, what's the alternative? This is what worries me most. We can't have another lockdown where non essential shops and services are closed without further damage to the economy and MH being affected but we can't let hospitals hit crisis point without further damage to them either, plus a lot of lives lost that could have been saved.

I don't know what the answer is, but it's worrying.

namechangefail2020 · 18/10/2020 04:14

The amount of people saying the rules are confusing gets in my tits! Not saying I agree with them or disagree but you put your postcode into bbc and it couldn't be clearer what you can and can't do! Stop making excuses and admit you just dont want to stick to them

MumsGoneToIceland · 18/10/2020 06:23

With a circuit-breaker, surely as soon as it’s all over and we start mixing again, the numbers will shoot back up again so how often will circuit breakers need to happen? The point of the current measures are to try and manage the number of cases continually with distancing and not mixing households but it’s not working because too many people are ignoring the restrictions as many comments on here demonstrate.

Hyperfish101 · 18/10/2020 06:36

A circuit breaker will slow down growth and buy time for the NHS. Yes numbers will go up again after release from it but it gives a bit of respite.

Honestly, so many people are ‘over it’ and can’t be bothered to comply that current restrictions will not work. The outcome will be a circuit breaker I expect.

That’s what annoys me about people who won’t follow any restrictions. The situation is made worse and tighter restrictions will be brought in.

Pixxie7 · 18/10/2020 06:39

Now the government has admitted that they can get people’s details from track and trace, I don’t think there is any chance. People will probably will be reluctant to report symptoms so things will get worse.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2020 06:42

If they slow down growth then that can work.

We’ve just been put into tier 2 but still under 100 cases per 100k. On Covid messenger it seems to be going up more slowly. Need more time though to see impact of new tier.

Reading about people who see everyone fed up around them is tough as it could get worse in high areas. Although has Manchester started to fall slightly?

chipshopElvis · 18/10/2020 06:44

Nope. I'm in Greater Manchester we have been under what are now tier 2 restrictions since July with the additional restriction of not being able to meet in gardens. It's not gone very well has it?

QueenofmyPrinces · 18/10/2020 06:51

This is a virus. Unless everyone is locked up then no amount of masks and social distancing is going to make any difference.

Whilst everyone is out at work, pubs and restaurants are open, and schools, colleges and universities are open then this virus will continue to spread regardless of “The Rules.”

People don’t comply with the rules as they are ridiculous and contravene with that’s going on in society...,I.e everywhere is open, lots of people are mingling with each other and that’s fine, but God forbid you have a 7th person in your house.

Hasn’t it been shown that of the 20 towns/cities that were put in to extra measures a few months ago, 19 of them still had case number continue to rise?

The Government say we can’t go into Full Lockdown again and so they have to just accept that the virus rates are going to increase and that masks are rules are probably going to have very little impact.

All this talk of circuit breakers - I don’t think two weeks of isolation would make any difference really and I can hardly see such a small time frame providing the NHS with any measurable respite.

This is a world wide, virulent virus and people who think masks and Tiers and going to halt it in its path whilst life continues as normal are kidding themselves in my opinion.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2020 07:00

We don’t have to get tier 2 numbers here right back down just to really slow growth down. Full lockdown really deceased numbers but hospitals can manage atm and if stick at around here in the next few weeks / longer.

It’ll be different in high areas as hospitals will be more stretched.

perhapstomorrow · 18/10/2020 07:03

I don't think that the system will work. We live on a London border so we are teir 2,, we are 1 mile from a teir 1 county. My DC go to school in the teir 1 county. The infection rate in our teir 2 area is very similar to the teir 1 area. I am finding it very hard to justify it to my DC that they cannot see their friends outside of school when they are in the same bubble at school because we live 1 mile away. Doesn't make sense.

Iheartmysmart · 18/10/2020 07:21

Of course it won’t. People are sick to the back teeth of our incompetent government and their double standards and cronyism.
I’ll reluctantly obey the mask rule and social distancing but i am not shutting myself away from friends and family again unless the Three Bellends publish a sensible exit strategy from this shitshow. And accept that lockdowns won’t work on a fucking virus!

Lolaloveslemonade · 18/10/2020 07:34

No, it will not work.
I am shut up in a classroom for 5 hrs a day with up to 125 different children 5 days a week.
Yet I can’t have anyone over to my house?

Lolaloveslemonade · 18/10/2020 07:36

‘anyone’ = family.

Iggly · 18/10/2020 07:39

No.
What works is a decent testing regime, backed up by strong contact tracing.

And quick financial support for those screwed by having to isolate.

BertNErnie · 18/10/2020 07:39

I think primary schools are a definite breeding ground. Pupils are either asymptomatic or have non typical symptoms such as a stomach ache. There have been a number of random year group bubbles closed at my children's school with an upset tummy who are then found to be positive cases.

I think any child who is sick needs to stay off and get a test before coming back to school or if we want to keep schools open, testing needs to happen on a weekly basis.

No idea how that would work though.

Danglingmod · 18/10/2020 07:46

I agree the rules are not confusing - people are just using that as an excuse to not stick to them (though how bloody stupid that the govt agreed Lancs can have concessions - gyms open - to agree to go into tier 3, thus losing the point of the new system!)

I'm in a tier 1 area with much higher rates than London so that's weird/confusing/annoying.

I don't know substantial numbers of people breaking any rules around here, in fact, I think people are do less than they are allowed, by and large, eg only meeting outdoors, even though we could meet indoors.

Maybe this explains why the figures in our schools are significantly higher than in the general population. It, and workplaces, are the main times that people are mixing inside.

Zampa · 18/10/2020 07:59

There's proof that the tier system doesn't work in the figures in Manchester (even ignoring the return of students pushing up rates).

My borough went into the equivalent of tier 2 at the end of July with rates of about 22 per 100K. We're now at 325 per 100K.

Those in tier 1 wanting to inflict further pain on Manchester would do well to remember that their rates are currently higher than those seen in Manchester when rules were tightened over summer.

We need circuit breakers to coincide with school holidays. Private school kids are currently having a 2 week half term so why not state schools too?

InTheLongGrass · 18/10/2020 08:00

The tiers system is a great simplification of the mishmash of local lockdown rules we had before. At least now there are only 3 choices about what you can do.
But Leciester, Liverpool and Manchester numbers seems to suggest it's not enough, or the rules in those areas would have been relaxed.
I would rather force my fathers business into bankruptcy by shutting all pubs, restaurants and non essential shops than screw over a whole generation of kids by shutting schools again tho.

kezziethecat · 18/10/2020 08:02

Unfortunately I don't think so. Chris Whitty didn't sound very confident about it. They seem to be preparing us for a second lockdown to be honest. Really hope not.

Letseatgrandma · 18/10/2020 08:29

No, I don’t think so.

Whilst schools are open as normal, they are huge points of transmission and people won’t stop mixing.

Hyperfish101 · 18/10/2020 08:32

@QueenofmyPrinces yes I’m aware how viruses work.

Actually restrictions of various kinds do work. There is evidence to suggest they impact transmission. Hence how cases were so low in the summer. Masks and SD does have an impact. So we can’t say that restrictions won’t work at all. Trouble is they only work with a degree of compliance.

So what’s your suggestion? Exponential growth is not an option. There is still a large human and economic impact and no govt will sanction this.

Some people think we should have no restrictions and that life could go on as normal. I very much doubt it.

Remmy123 · 18/10/2020 08:39

Nothing works unless we all lockdown for months again.. but I'm not prepared to do that as most people, apart from most of MN on this forum who would love it .. 🙄

RaggieDolls · 18/10/2020 08:46

Totally agree @HeIenaDove. Sick of being led by a government who do not have a plan and just lie all the time and hand out money to their mates rather than local authorities who get all the complex cases.

QueenofmyPrinces · 18/10/2020 08:50

So what’s your suggestion? Exponential growth is not an option. There is still a large human and economic impact and no govt will sanction this.

I have no suggestion.

The reality is we either go into complete lockdown or we allow the virus to rapidly spread.

The Government say we can’t do the first and so the latter is inevitable.

Masks, social distancing and circuit breakers will not do much I fear.
