Highly regarded epidemiologist Dr Michael Osterholm, who has never been afraid to issue grave predictions with regard to the pandemic, is sounding very optimistic in this latest podcast. He does say we have a difficult further three to four months ahead, but that from spring there will be vaccines and things will start to look different. He is definitely a realist, so if he is saying this, I definitely think there is hope Smile

Sebw · 30/10/2020 22:45

Pfizer's vaccine is looking to be effective and last about one year at least according to the head of Biontech who is working with Pfizer in Germany. Results should be out within 2 weeks.

The article is in German so I haven't referenced it.

Vaccination campaign said to be in process of planning for December in London

Would fit with the lockdown ending early December. I think they were hoping to limp through with the tiers for a few more weeks but haven't quite been able to get there. I know more lockdown is shit but I do think it's a means to an end this time, we just have to keep it manageable until the vaccine programme is up and running, hopefully that will be a matter of weeks now.

ChristmasinJune · 31/10/2020 22:02

I've just posted very similar on another thread @Sunshinegirl82. Another lockdown is horrible I know but if we can all keep going for a bit longer I think we'll see things start to improve soon Smile

"We confirm the MHRA's (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) rolling review of our potential COVID-19 vaccine," an AstraZeneca spokesman said.

In rolling reviews, regulators are able to see clinical data in real time and have dialogue with drug makers on manufacturing processes and trials to accelerate the approval process.

I'm not entirely sure what this means because I don't think they've unblinded yet. But this was newly reported today and sounds pretty positive 😁

It looks like the Pfizer and Astrazeneca vaccines are being reviewed. Does that mean they've been unblinded and are currently going through the interim analyses? It reads like it, but I could be being over-optimistic ( feel like I need it!!!)

cathyandclare · 01/11/2020 16:20

Sorry it doesn't mean that- I was getting carried away! From the EMA:

The start of the rolling review means that the committee has started evaluating the first batch of data on the vaccine, which come from laboratory studies (non-clinical data)

Still progress though

Good points about vaccine...

Taken from Steve Brown on Twitter. He is great to follow for positivity.

I think that also fits with Boris's earlier message about things hopefully being more normal by Christmas. It must have been a bit of a blow when the trial had to be halted in September.

Daily Telegraph reporting Kate Bingham Head of UK Vaccine task force has said privately that all UK adults over 50 will be vaccinated by Easter.,,,. Report is behind a pay wall but will try and link below

chri55ie · 01/11/2020 19:54

I know it says test in the link but talking about vaccine!

tootyfruitypickle · 01/11/2020 20:23

If there is a low take up maybe it will include over 40s by easter ! (Everyone will take in the end I’m sure, but I’d be v happy to have that needle in my arm ASAP!).

I'm 47, I never thought I'd be wishing I was already 50 lol

God that would be fabulous.

I’m not 50, but that would make an enormous difference to the whole of society.

tootyfruitypickle · 01/11/2020 21:44

It really would!

Chickenandrice · 01/11/2020 21:45

Yes this also concerns me too as the vaccine is reportedly going to reduce severe symptoms but not reduce infections. So the 40s are all going to cat h it
